Too many choices and too much consequence.

This will never fit TES.

There are no dwarves in Skyrim... and it just sounds like one of the radiant "Pay to kill [insert creature] at [insert location]" quests.

Also, what is the reasoning for turning in to a dwarf?

So... you want to turn into a dwarf? Because of what appears to be a chance encounter? And how does saving a baby dwarf turn you into a dwarf exactly??

The last dwarf was in Morrowind and you could kill him so no as it breaks TES lore.

So... you want to turn into a dwarf? Because of what appears to be a chance encounter? And how does saving a baby dwarf turn you into a dwarf exactly??

Because, as you can tell from the story, the dwarf mother is single. As such, after you save the daughter, you stick around and raise her as her father. Dwarfs are well-known to release pheromones, which slowly turn humans and other non-dwarf creatures into dwarfs. This facilitates reproduction between dwarfs and other species. However, the dwarf hormones were not powerful enough for you to reproduce with the dwarf mother (and the baby daughter insists on a baby brother). Therefore, you have to kill another troll, which protects a cave bearing strong dwarf pheromones (produced from the crushing of many previously captured dwarfs). This will be the next future quest.

Dang, I must have missed the part in LoTR when they mention this.

Make freinds with troll?

Story line has just been updated to include a greater consequence to picking this choice.

Not as good as mine!
1.You enter a cave and
Spoiler
get hit by a fridge and die.
or
Spoiler
get hit by a bus and die.
or
Spoiler
turn around and leave but every NPC gets hit by a bus and dies.

Choices and stuff, its brilliant!

Right, because being sent to jail for the rest of your life thanks to bad tasting mead is quality writing.

It was poisoned mead and not just bad tasting mead.
The quest had a moral to it and this is what matters.

Spoiler
A poison that doesn't harm the victim in the slightest, so all it did was taste bad.

Not to mention the mead that was given to the captain was from a completely separate barrel :P

This quest was in fact implemented into the game - you are approached by an elderly female dwarf. However, the dwarves are all dead, you see no one, there is no dialogue and the ice troll becomes aggressive because it can't eat the non-existent baby, and so attacks on sight with no chance of being friends.

You kill the troll and move on, or die.

Barrel on the desk was where the mead was taken from. It's permanently on the desk. You went and poisoned a vat in the back room. Unless the poison magically teleported the captain did not get poisoned mead.

also

Spoiler
since when do guard captains go through poison testing school. and, if he was poisoned, why were there no effects other than bad taste?

I see it now. But why was it implemented in such a simplistic manner?

Because that's pretty much all you can do when the lore demands that all dialogue be removed from this quest... also not everything is as simple as it looks, from working with the CK I have determined that Skyrim puts a lot of effort into doing not a lot. Just look at the relationships settings, or the massive amount of unused scripts...
