"Paladin" ish character?

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 7:26 am

So am thinking of creating a "Paladin"-ish character. One handed is main weapon of choice (This is for the upcomming DLC)
However am not sure what more to pick. I have a "storyline" and everything worked out exactly WHY she is in Skyrim etcetera..

One-Handed
Heavy Armor
Restoration
??

Am not sure about block cause i want to have a healing spell in the other hand or a ward or something.
Any ideas on how i can make this character successful?

Paladins generally have Shields. I play a Paladin Nord character currently, and my skills are in my signature. You have to make room for Restoration spells as well, what I do is I alternate between the two as I need them. You also have to mostly have a generally good alignment, for example doing evil quests/murdering people would be something you want to stay away from. Dawnbreaker (Sword) is definitely something you want to look into as well.

Bare minimum skills:

One-Handed
Block
Heavy Armor
Restoration
Smithing
Speech

I would add Block and Alteration. Also, why not swap shield for restoration spell when you need healing?

One-handed (Mace or one handed hammer if they ever add it)
Heavy Armour
Restoration (Healing)
Alteration (Flesh spells)
Enchanting
Lockpicking
Speech

I don't really see a Paladin using a shield, that seems more like a warrior or knight. Paladins generally use a hammer/mace and magic in the other hand. Their magic is usually consisted of healing and buffs (such as Flesh spells and the dragonhide spell)

EDIT: If you're looking for more of a harder hitting weapon, I would do warhammers coupled with buffing before fights and healing after.

That doesn't make any sense, he would just be getting mauled while blocking and healing. He'd end up with little to show by the time he switched back to his main weapon. While healing he should be attacking. That's how paladins work.

Maybe if you wanted a Paladin TANK it would make sense.

This isn't WoW, though.

Anyway, how you view a Paladin is highly subjective. Personally, I view a Paladin as a Chivalrous sort of Holy Knight, I picture them in Heavy Armor, sword and shield, casting holy magic. Perhaps I am just too used to FF, but that is how they are in those games and that is how I've always pictured them.

I'd suggest either using Dawnbreaker, or leveling up enchanting and putting enchants on your sword such as turn undead or banish, etc.

I also suggest possibly waiting for the DLC, as this may change your outlook on how you want your Paladin to be. At least, it did for me. :)

Paladins in most any lore anywhere use Maces. Although in TES you have Chrysamere, which is a Paladin two handed sword. So it's up to you what to play.

right now i'm also working on my own Paladin Character for Dawnguard and as Virtuosus said it's all subjective because everyone has his own image of an Paladin in mind, so here is mine:
1 hd + 2 hd weapons (i'm using Volendrung and Dawnbreaker)
Heavy Armor (my Paladin looks like those Ultramarines from Warhammer 40000 with his Full set of Dwemer Armor)
Restoration (heal spells for now but later on i will use ward spells for protection and powerfull turn undead spells)
Smithing
Enchanting
and Archery (i don't use it right now, i wait for the crossbows)

I have a Breton paladin. Level 33 so far. His main skills include:
One Handed (swords)
Block
Heavy Armor
Marksman (crossbows when they come out)
Restoration
Alteration
Blacksmithing
Enchanting

The stone I use is:
The lord's stone

He is one of the most fun archetypes I have played and spells don't hurt him at all because of his Breton resistance to magic, and couple that with the lords stone, he already has 50% resistance. I also have the block perk that blocks elemental damage by 50. And I have all of the alteration perks then resist magic, and the atronach perk which absorbs magic. And I have peryite's shield which has the ward for 50% spell deflection.

With console commands?

Sorry I only watched the first few seconds of that video.

What a paladin is largely depends on what the individual believes, outside of the normal "wears heavy armor and kills evil things" its largely up to interpretation. WoW doesn't determine it, D&D doesn't determine it either. Just like a warrior can be varied, I'm sure some paladins use 2hand weapons, some use 1hand and shield, some use 1hand and spell.

Its the same way that being a wizard doesn't mean you need to wear a pointed hat with moons and stars and have a three foot beard.

He only uses a console command to spawn the Bone Dragon, since they "naturally" spawn at Lvl 65, and he's a Lvl 57. He won't reach Lvl 65 either, since he won't level up skills that he doesn't actually use.

You should see the whole list of fights he does with the Deadly Dragons mod. The Zealot of Akatosh just straight up rips him apart though, but that's like a Lvl 80+ Dragon, and the most powerful one in the game.

I don't get all the mace references, unless it's something from WoW. Maybe everyone is confusing Paladins with Clerics?

Every D&D-style Paladin I've ever seen wore heavy armor, carried a sword and shield. A mace isn't necessarily a bad thing, as the Knights of the 9 from Oblivion had the option of both.

I'm currently playing a Paladin in Skyrim, and my main skills are Heavy Armor, one-handed(sword), Block, Restoration, Speech, and Alteration for defensive spells.

If you're going to use magic, I'd say restoration is a must, and possibly alteration to fit the RP. also the magic resistance perks in that tree help considerably against mages

Honestly, I'd rather be healing myself with a shield up than trying to fend off a foe with a sword and heal. If you have Block sufficiently leveled with a few Power Bash perks, you can shut an enemy down and afford yourself plenty of time to heal up. Trying to use a weapon and heal is just going to get you hit more, thus having to heal more damage.

I hadn't thought of power bash, good point. However I still don't think that fits being a paladin.

We're just from different worlds then. Every game I've played that had Paladins, they were much more focused on Defense rather than Offense. Shields were almost mandatory.

The defense aspect is a moot point in Skyrim though, since you can hit the armor cap with even light armor. Just for RP purposes, I suppose.

Paladins work for a specific "good" diety don't they? How can you be one when the devines don't seem to interact with anyone?

From what I've understood, at least in different games, Paladins are champions of Good, of an ideal. Not always of a specific deity. Clerics/Druids/Priests are the ones who draw power from specific divine beings. Varies from game to game though.

If I were you, I'd definitely use Block! Otherwise, you're going to take a hell of a lot of damage!

Also, archery might be a good skill to invest in, ok at low levels using a long bow and iron arrows it can take a while to kill things, but after starting a new game, I'm only level 5 and with an Imperial Bow (Fine) and Steel Arrows and sneaking, I can take out a low level bandit in a few well placed arrows!
