Post » Mon May 28, 2012 11:10 am

Against my better judgment i started steam and let it update....sigh...

Ok not funny Bethesda...

1) After update, run launcher. Data file , is grayed out. OK so i let Steam verify cache....Doesn't work...next
2) Start Game.....mouse is Borked....right/left good ...NO up/down...sigh
3) go and delete my 3 files...Skyrim.ini, pref ini and render info .text.
4) open to main menu .use tab to Generate my new INI (i like this one) exit game, compare to old...says same?? HUH?
5) Start Game......Red logo on Main menu (OK i know how to fix that) go in game. Still mouse no up/down....????
6) huh..this is not possible...ok Delete the 3 files again!!!
7) Start Game ....main menu still red logo????? WTF
8) Search entire computer for an elusive hidden Skyrim.INI .....ahhhhhh
9) FIND a new spot the Game saves a generated INI.....in the DATA folder!!!!!
10)This is not Fun guys!

Have fun everyone. :)

These things are gonna really mess with NEW users!!!

SO which place should the game be reading the Skyrim INI??? Game makes its file in My docs, but overrides if one found in Data??...Grrrr

But i do have a generated ini and my mouse is working again....lets see what else is gonna make me ?!?!?!

I've been playing all day and don't have an ini file in the Data folder and it's been working just fine. Not sure what is wrong with yours.

I have lost my .ini, too! Where exactly did you find it? Not seeing it right off in Data. I hit "saveini", expecting the generated one with the red logo. Got the red logo, but the ini in My Docs didn't appear to change. Deleted it and still got the red logo. Something weird is going on here.

That's the problem. Try deleting the one in My Docs. Let the game recreate a vanilla one. Then use the "saveini" command. Exit and save game. Restart. You should see the red dragon logo. Goto the newly generated .ini in my dics. Delete it. Restart game. At this, I am getting the red logo still Which is impossible unless there is another stealth ini now generated somewhere......................

Mine just recreates the ini file in my Skyrim folder in Documents, no matter how many times I delete it or use the saveini command. What red dragon logo are we talking about?

Edit : Deleting my SkyrimPrefs.ini file and letting it make a new one did start causing it to be a red dragon logo. I've searched my computer though and I don't see any other Skyrim.ini files, I can only assume this is a bug with deleting those two files and letting it make new ones.

Edit2 : I guess I'll need to look around more for the new Skyrim.ini file as the old ones uGridsToLoad setting is set to what it should be but it is crashing my save as if I had it set to the wrong amount, I will make a new post once I find it.

Happen to have the realistic water textures mod installed?

It appears when I did the saveini command it overwrote the "RealisticWaterTextures.INI" file in the Data folder with the Skyrim.INI stuff and started using that file. I'm going to delete all my INI files and remove that mod and see if that fixes the red logo problem. It is definitely the new INI file though because when I set uGrids in that one I could load my save again.

Pretty sure using saveini from the console creates a Skyrim.ini in your \Steam\SteamApps\common\skyrim\Data folder. Just delete it, delete the two in your My Games Skyrim folder, and run the launcher. Set up your video settings, then run the game. Do NOT use the console to saveini. Just let it load, maybe load up a save, then exit.

It used to save that file in the Documents\My Games\Skyrim folder but isn't doing that now for whatever reason. For me it is saving it as the RealisticWaterTextures.ini file in the Data folder even though I've uninstalled the mod.

Found it. But it wasn't called Skyrim.ini. For some reason, it took the name of one of my mods "Realistic Running Speed.esp" and call it self ""Realistic Running Speed.ini". I kid you not. The file size clued me in. Natorious look for a .ini file sized 41 kb in your Data file. Let us know what it is called.

Mine was 40.7kb. As long as I delete that file and don't use saveini I can edit the normal Skyrim.ini file and the settings stick though.

Shouldn't need to use saveini anyway. Still a weird bug.

This is indeed a weird one...My generated ini now goes to the "DATA" directory. Steam/common\...bla bla...but all of a sudden i am a crash fest!!!!

I have tried everything guys...name it , all i need to do to go from Stable to crash fest is ...

Crashes with...
1.3 exe and steam running
generated ini
default INI
no mods

Stable
1.1.12 exe no steam
either INI
with or without mods

With the 1.3 exe in place I can take one step and CTD. Close Steam rename EXE. reload game (NO other changes) and it dident crash for 20 mins. Close game . Revert the name . Crash in 4 steps. Change it Back , and played for 30 mins.

This is 100% reproducible. the only change is stop steam & rename EXE. Now a reminder everything was done according to Steam. I let it online. it updated the exe and did what ever it wanted. Start game instant crash. deleted all ini's let steam and the game make new ones. Steam and the Game refuse to work with those files. but happily the Original exe doesn't care. I don't know what to make of this. For now I will use my Stable, (**15 hour session) EXE.

1.1.21 FTW
Now, back to the thread testing I was doing** , before another Patch fiasco, svcked up 4 hours of my limited time .

**(skyrim starts with around 28 threads active & @ 15 hours in it had 37 running.) see if changes to INI change anything...

I did the saveini command in the console and yeah, the ini got saved in the data folder and of course the red tint appeared to the loading screen 3d models came up. I was able to revert it back, by copying over my skyrim.ini from my games/skyrim to the data folder to have the same .ini. The red tint is gone. No crashes or anything else abnormal with either .ini file, beside of course the red tint with the saved ini.

You can use 1.1 without bypassing or disabling Steam by the way... Just revert certain files whenever Skyrim updates.

Because of a few posts from people I know, (from Oblivion forum) and trust what they have to say....I went and redid the update to 1.3 . The instant crash i was having with 1.3 is gone. Only played about 1/2 hour. tomorrow is a Saturday...IF I cant get a 15 hour run then I will Pack up 1.3 and go back to what I was doing...1.1.12 with LAA and no steam.

Think it was my fault ..didn't untic a mod in Wrye bash. I had only one mod that had a esp. the rest are texture replacer's.

The Problem is not with with computer, its with the one sitting in the Chair. :)

I had a similar issue with my save file after trying to revert ugrids to a lower setting.

I can confirm that it will use whatever mod name it decided to use that you have installed. For me it was Tytanis.ini.

It's all detailed and explained http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1309736-i-broke-skyrim/page__gopid__19718399#entry19718399.

I hope this helps people.

Just to say, with 1.3.10 whenever you use the SAVEINI file, you will also get an .INI file that has the name of one of your mods (if you use mods). Usually it seems to be whichever mod loads last, but yes. 1.3.10 saveini function DOES save out a 41K .ini file in the /DATA directory and the name will not always be SKYRIM.INI. So... if you're ever having odd problems, look for ANY .INI file in the \DATA directory.
