1.5 patch grass ghost images while sprinting

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 8:03 am

Getting a strange ghost images from the grass outside of Whiterun. Maybe more places, but that's the only place I have really been to test it out. Only happens when sprinting. Latest drivers, gt560ti. I don't have any texture mods loaded.

Actually it is happening when just moving around in the environment. This is just west of rorikstead:

Now, I'm hitting enemies with killmoves, but doesn't take any energy away. Keep kill moving them over and over. All creatures so far. Can I get 1.4 back? 1.5 doesn't really work.

I am currently playing a very “entertaining” game of “choose your glitch”.

I can play without ENB.0096 using the newest nVidia drivers and the game looks crisp, but ... the outdoor environment shadows go completely nuts. For example, shadows cast by trees on the ground are usually invisible unless my character is standing inside the cast shadow. Moving through an area with a lot of trees (or houses or rocks) has the shadows appearing and disappearing very rapidly.
The direction I look at also seems to factors into this. Its a game breaking glitch really, its like someone is randomly enabling and disabling the shadows on the fly while I play.
Oh, and spiderwebs, fire and light-ray effects are invisible too. (The shadow problem is new with 1.5, the invisible spiderwebs I had from day one.)

Or ... I can play with ENB.0096 enabled and the environment shadows work but I get the ghost image thing on grass, as shown in Livewired500's screenshot. Also I cannot see anything but a blank greenish gray screen while underwater (this I managed to fix by disabling DoF).
And of course I can now see spiderwebs, fire and light-rays.

Both options svck to a degree but I went with ENB. The grass ghosting is less of a game breaker than all the shadows randomly flickering on and off.

My graphics card is a nVidia 7950 GT, its really old, so I am not actually complaining. Its just one more example why having updates forced down your throat without and chance to say “no thanks” or rolling back after giving it a whirl is not really such a great thing.

I managed to find a way to get 1.4 back by using someone's suggestion about right clicking on the Skyrim folder and going to Properties > Previous Version. Then turn off auto update in Steam.

On the other PC I uninstalled the ENB and it is working fine with DOF enabled. So, I decided to try out RCRN and it is working as well. I can't blame the update for messing with a 3rd party ENB. Will have to see if the ENB updates to the patch really. RCRN is good, but like the ENB a bit better.

We'll have to wait and see. Not decided if I want to re-update to 1.5 on my main PC or not. I really wish they had more options for lighting and graphics in general in the main game, so we wouldn't have to have graphics mods. Oh well.

Turning off auto-update in Steam does zilch in my experience. Log in and out of Steam a few times and the game will go back to automatic updates all by itself. I usually keep my Steam client in offline mode all the time but every once in a while I need to download a new game or have some other reason to go online again ... and Steam immediately jumps at the chance and ninja updates all my games, whether I want it or not. That option simply isn't persistent.

My current gripe with the new patch is that “out of the box”, vanilla, it now messes up my shadows big time. My graphics card is old but it is fully DX9 compatible. It still doesn't work right. Shadows don't render. I move a bit, suddenly shadows render, I move a bit more, shadows still render but only on the left half of the screen. Flicker! Flicker! Flicker!

I actually need the ENB patch to get a decent game experience but 1.5 messed with that too. I get the whip either way, I can only choose how often they lash at me or how hard they hit.

I think what I am really asking for is a option to turn off this ominous new “Grass shadow” thing they added. Because it doesn't work for me. Not at all. Grass doesn't cast shadows. There is no shadow cast upon grass. Grass just ended up looking extremely ugly on my end.
