Patching process

Post » Wed May 11, 2011 12:07 am

Just out of curiosity does anyone know exactly what a company goes through when making patches for a game? I'm sure they have to replicated the problem before trouble shooting but what are prioritization levels for deciding which fix comes first and how do they go through the process of allocating resources for which aspect of the patch. Also I was wondering if Beth and Obsidian are going to end up releasing smaller patches here and there of are going to do a big fix. I would think there is some sort of approval process that has to go through Microsoft and Sony first just for quality assurance purposes but I could be wrong.

I'm an IT guy from a pretty big company (trust me I'm not in any important position what so ever) and troubleshooting issues and management just interested me. If anyone knows or has some insight (not just with this patch) on the over all process from an industry stand point that would great. Learning something new or how things work is never a bad thing.

Step 1: Widespread gamebreaking problems reported.
Step 2: They largely ignore it.
Step 3: They count money.

I see you're still trolling the forums with your false accusations. Pathetic..

If you hate the game so much, how come you're patroling the forums every single day ? Get rid of it, sell it, get a refund. Move on with your life. Get some pu55i !?

the game is broke. he spent his hard earned money on something he expected to be in proper working order upon purchased but recieved a broken piece of software instead.

he has a right to be p!ssed.

and many of these game companies do this crap so he also has a right to be jaded.

But they are working on another patch, so he shouldent be spreading false rumors.

Yes, he has the right to be pissed, but he can be pissed in a civilised maner, and not be filling people with his lies, which is all he does on these forums.

Oh and btw, I just love how some poeple always have to say "hard earned money" :celebration:

What are u talking about? I am level 22 and no crashes. All I have seen is couple dead bodies half way in ground. And some slow downs but nothing game breaking. So please stop saying that this game is broken and unplayable.

kill motor runner or complete "fly me to the moon" and save your game and come back here and tell us how you really feel.

Yeah, my money is pretty easily earned so maybe that's why I'm less upset. But I agree, he/she has no evidence that they are not patching the game, he's/she's just being vindictive and trying to make every one else feel bad. Why? I don't know. We can assume they bought the game and encountered an error (possibly the DLC one which makes it unplayable) which would make them understandably upset. But as far as coming on the forum and being contrary (with no evidence) every time someone mentions the word patch is childish. Nemt never offers any reasoning behind his argument other than the dev's are (to him/her) heartless people who only care about bilking people out of their money. I think its pretty obvious that Obsidian isn't heartless and actually do want the game to work. These are creative people who are probably working hard to fix problems so that everyone can enjoy New Vegas. Have a little patience.

And as far a patching software is concerned its a very complicated process (obviously). I can't tell you much about how Beth/Obsidian does theirs. I know at the company I do IT for its incredibly complicated. And our programs are simple data storage. It requires coordination of the people controlling the hardware (Microsoft) and the people who developed the software combined with tons of user feedback. The TC is right, being able to replicate the error and the conditions that cause it is key. Once it has been determined where the error came from the next step is looking at the code and figuring out how it was supposed to work ideally, and then writing another piece of code to supersede the non-working bit. Then comes testing the code. As you can imagine the process gets more complicated the more functions and scripts running together and effecting each other. Sorry for the wall of text.

I do believe most patch fixes need to go through Microsoft for certification before they are able to be released on live.

That's the problem. I don't think everyone is experiencing same exact quest bugs. I completed "come fly with me" (to the moon?) hours and hours ago and experienced no bugs. I also killed motor runner about 30 hrs in and no problems. I'm now at 45 hrs in with no major bugs
