People Who Read Books Ruin Perfectly Good Movies/shows

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 2:38 pm

Books are in my opinion superior, if only because I can pronounce the names any way I want to in my head.

This. I like to picture the world/characters my way, and a movie usually takes that away from me. That said, unfortunately I'm not a huge reader. But when I do read, I hesitate to watch any movie associated with it.

Am I really that slow of a reader? How fast do you read? I always thought 12 hours for 300 pages was pretty acceptable.

Well, I was looking to see whether you were or not, and I found the following:

2 words per minute is the advlt average
250 words per page is about the industry standard.

Which would mean ~10.5 hours.

Personally, I read a bit quicker than that, though I'll admit to doing a lot of reading, so I should be pretty quick about it.

19 times out of 20 the reason someone will tell you to read a book instead of watching a film is because 19 times out of 20 film adaptatations of books svck. Go get some culture instead of breathing in Hollywood and wasting your life on video games :P

Well, when people say to read the book that the movie is based on, I usually say that there's a reason I want to see the movie, and that is that I don't feel like spending a day or two reading a 300+ page book. I want to see the movie because it's just that, a movie. If I wanted to read the book, I would, but I don't want to. It's especially ridiculous when people say that about the Harry Potter books, which are each well over 700+ pages in length. I know at least one of them was over 1000 pages. I'm sorry, but I don't have days to devote to reading a 1000 page book, I much prefer a 3 hour movie.

By all means feel free to not read Harry Potter - but please don't see the movies, they're horrendous.

I would consider that slow. My husband wouldn't. I read several books a night, usually ~325+ pages, or more each. My husband reads the same book going on a week or two. :shrugs: It isn't really all that much about speed tbh, anyway. Some are fast, some are slow - as long as you enjoy reading, in the long run, who honestly cares? I know I don't care anyway (or my husband would drive me crazy(-ier) :P)

Movies ruin books my friend, not the other way around. Its not Holywoods fault though, its just impossible to translate a book perfectly into a movie.

I think everybody is missing the point of the topic. The topic is NOT about books versus movies/shows. This topic IS about the people who read books and are constantly complaining about how the show has ruined the story.

My vocabulary in 9th grade (according to the test I had taken in school then) was well above average and this with reading maybe a handful of books in my life time. This certainly isn't an argument that reading isn't beneficial but you don't necessarily have to read to have a decent vocabulary.

Edit: Wanted to clarify that I mean you don't have to read tons of books to have a decent vocabulary. Reading is more then likely an essential part of having a decent vocabulary, however i think it is more based upon what you read rather then how often.

That is not a topic we can entertain on these forums. Venting about how you find certain people contemptible for complaining about movies derived from books and encouraging other people to argue about it with you is called flamebait.

Closed. Don't bring it up again.
