Pickpocket worth it? Thieves?

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 6:30 am

I wonder if Pickpocket tree, perks is worth taking for a Thief or a Dark Brotherhood member? Such as putting poison in enemies pocket, is it handy enough? Or is it a thing you won't ever use normally, if you carry a bow or something..?

I think I used it once or twice on my thief character. Really though, I don't think it's that useful, except for getting a little extra coin every now and then.

Without spoiling! Are you not required to be able to pickpocket to complete Thieves Guild quests?

Not that I remember, although I never did some of the 'special jobs' as they're called. You may be required to pickpocket in those. Someone else may be able to elaborate.

Well that poisoned perk can be usefull for taking targets in public (Taverns) But u have to be "HIDDEN" while putting poison in thier pocket so you dont get bounty when taget dies due to poison XD

Didn't find them particularly useful. I think any future characters I make will only take the 3 perks needed to unlock the Extra Pockets perk for the additional carry capacity (but then again I am something of a hoarder/pack-rat, so that perk is important to me)

Okey, cool-cool.

But off topic, if anyone can answer this.

If I get 5 points in Stealth, is the Invisibility spell really needed from Illusion?

Thanks for the notice.
I reconsider everything now, think I'm happy with the result.

I'm dropping Sneak totally for Illusion spells to help me move unoticed. As I've came to the conclussion I don't really need to sneak alot when using a Bound Bow as I will be so far away.
But with the Invisibility and a Sword, that will do good. But add Poisons to that, I don't think I really need this extra multiplier I get from sneak on Swords.

I have all of the stealth perks and two in the base. I use invisibility so that I can cross large well lit open areas without detection. Once I hit the shadows, I'm back in stealth mode.

i like the pickpocket tree, the encumbrance boost was well worth it imo.

but I'm very dissappointed in how poisoning works. basically the target consumes it right away. wtf? even OB we had to wait for the NPC schedule to consume something.

ME: (plants poison)
NPC: 'Oh hey, whats this shiny and foul smelling liquid I just found in my pocket? Might as well guzzle it now.'
NPC: (dies)

really?

I have a blast pickpocketing equipped items. For RP purposes I pickpocket the weapons of imperial soldiers and dump them in a river or some random barrel. It is fun to pickpocket the weapons off of Thalmor and then give them to the prisoner (who won't use them anyway ... ).

If somebody really ticks me off I will pickpocket their clothes. Need to be careful about this one because once they are unclothed the NPCs will never get dressed again, and naked NPCs blithely going about their business can look pretty silly.

Necessary? No. But definitely fun.

if you like to rob people blind then i suggest getting most of the pickpocket perks (key master is pointless though)

extra pockets is nice for the extra 100 carry weight
planting paralysis poisons on people make for a quick and easy kill
and stealing equipped weapons and items is just plain fun.

there are TG side quests (repeatable radiant quests) that require you to pickpocket, but you don't have to do them as there are always 2 other alternatives to steal items from a house or plant items if pickpocket isn't your thing.

You got good advice and honestly I love your build... still just gonna add my 2 cents.

I like the pickpocket tree if it isn't just for that beautiful encumbrance bonus. I love loot, and that is the first thing I got when I was speccing my new archer on the calculator. It's just that essential to me. Now, on a similar note, the lockpicking tree is near worthless. Don't bother with it.

And as for your build, you mentioned going invis with sword. I'd advise against this--especially on higher levels--when you get the dagger specific bonus. They're quick and deadly.

The Extra Pockets Perk is always nice +100 carry weight. Other than getting to that, i dont use the tree much. I can see how it could be fun to steal the equipped items off people, but i'm sure the novelty wears off.

The invisibility spell is never needed, by anyone. It is a fun (though quickly game-breaking) spell to play with, but Stealth is better if you're playing a character that's supposed to be stealthy.

Pickpocket is a great way to get free arrows (you take them from guards).

Yeah, the +100 CW is something I always go for. Can never have enough CW. But I never put more than the 3 perks it takes to get to it, into that tree. Pickpocketing is nice if you want to make some extra gold from stealing expensive jewelry and gems off of people, which can be a nice boost early on if you don't have much (Thieves Guild fence required to make this profitable of course)- but if you're getting enough gold through looting and whatnot, then there's certainly no need for it. I'll work up Pickpocketing to high levels as I go along, in order to help level my character- but I never put more than the 3 perk points into it.

True. But I managed it with a very low pickpocket skill. Also, you can still continue the quest line even if you fail at this point.

There are various reasons to take or not take any perk. I did not take any Pickpocketing perks for my main because I feel I did not need them to make that character what he was (Bosmer Assassin/Dragonsniper.) For my second character, I shall be playing a Khajit Pure-Thief/Ka'zhuum. Which means, I going to max out the whole Stealth tree in perks wise, except for the 6 perks I need in 1 Handed Weapon tree.

pickpocket should have been influenced by sneak. its a waste of a skill space. Not doubting its effectiveness or anything.
