that's some intense dislike, talaran
and CCNA, what you're describing just isn't feasible.
to me it's just the lesser of two evils. What's worse; having a voice picked for your character that you don't like or agree with that will speak for you in the dialogue heavy world. Or being the only mute person speaking imaginary words in a dialogue heavy world.
i think bioware hit the nail on the head with the hinted speaking options.
sure shepard's voice is awkward at times, sure the hints can be too vague at times. but you're trashing a very revolutionary dialogue system because of some mistakes here and there. The mass effect system has been done, what 2 times in the history of games? give it some time to fix itself. Put it on the developer's to hire better writers and voice actors.
I can't help it. When I created a male Shepard, Mark Meers was NOT the voice that went with my Shepard. Even if I stick with the default Sheploo, the voice is still "wrong" in some way to me. As a result, I have at least two female Shepards of every class in ME, most of them are leveled into the fifties. I've cheerfully imported those characters into ME2, because Jen Hale is still doing the voice. Unfortunately, Meers is still doing maleShep, and I still can't stand him as Shepard.
In DA:O my characters had the voice that I imagined. The full dialogue was there, and I didn't get any disconnected "Huh, what?" moments. I actually enjoyed DA:O more than ME and ME2. I play both, and enjoy them for what they are, but I prefer DA:O's system more than ME/ME2.
I prefer to play a game, not watch a movie with semi-interactive clicky bits here and there where you give a guess as to what you want the character to attempt to say. You still have a chance of getting a statement that is out of character for your character. The hints are beyond too vague at times. I ended up restarting one character because, following the paragon hints, I started a romance I didn't want. I also dislike the click upper right for the "good" choices, click the center choices for the "neutral" choices, and click lower right for the "jerk" choices. Why bother to read any of the replies when you can click the correct space and play your paragon/renegade on autopilot. Since you basically have three choices, you don't have to read at all. You can spacebar through the conversations too. Revolutionary isn't necessarily "great" in everyone's opinion.
EABioware is moving more to a "cinematic experience". I want to play a game when I play a game. When I want to watch a movie, I want to watch a movie. If I'm playing a game, give me the dialogue and let me choose what my character will say, and hear it in the voice I think my character has.
Actually, I shudder to think about how a voiced Elder Scrolls or Fallout protagonist would be like. They would never manage to create a voice that would satisfy a majority of players. Accents, tone of voice; they would never manage to satisfy the majority of players. There are still complaints about the changes in the dark elves from Morrowind to Oblivion. Let the sandbox games like Elderscrolls and Fallout stay mute. The linear, restricted, cinematic type games can have the voiced pc.
