playin with found items and not smithinenchanting

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 11:22 pm

i only ever played this game by smithing my own equipment and enchanting them. once u get ur smithing and enchanting up to a decent lvl u r a very overpowered character. i play on master with a few difficulty enchancing mods. i was wondering if playin the game with only the items u find makes it more interesting and challenging. with gear that is made and enchanted up to be the best i found no point in goin into dungeons and exploring. when i played a smithing and enchanting warrior i used the iron dagger method and enchanted them. what r ur opinions r using smithing/enchanting on a warrior type char...

Well certainly not using any smithing improvements or extra enchanting will result in a more challenging game for a much longer period of time. You'll deal less damage and take more. You're talking about using weapons that hit in the 40's instead of the 80's or 90's or possibly higher. You would have to rely much more on found enchants and picking the proper necklace and ring to fill in missing stats. It would certainly help to prevent becoming overpowered. I played my mage much like this seeing as he had no armor and only used enchanted gear found in the game except for one necklace I made with enchanting in the 50's and no perks. That was my most challenging character by far.

This is always how I've played so far. Never tried smithing or enchanting. My archer character has only got some good items that I found by searching random caves and I'm glad I did. I managed to find Elven braces with +30% bow damage and I also have a circlet I found that gives +35% bow damage. I remember finding my first glass bow which was a big improvement. I haven't found much other great items so far. I just wish there was better loot because a lot of the time I find really lame stuff in chests like 17 Gold or low leveled items. I want more reward for my exploration or for defeating a boss. My first character was my mage which I used only robes and gear I could find. I was trying to get the most Magicka regen possible and then I realised how terrible the regeneration was during battle but it was still fun.

Most of my characters don't perk enchanting. I find that it makes it much more fun to find enchanted items in chests and at merchants because I am always ugrading my equipment. My one character that perked enchanting never needs to worry about finding better gear because the stuff he enchants is better than what you can get in the game world.

You will find that you level quite slowly by comparison... which is fine if you don't mind it. By your mid 20s you'll find it very difficult to progress unless you really diversive the types of weapons/spells/armor that you use.

Is that a bad thing, though?

Personally, I don't strive to acquire the next level. I strive to perk what I want, play who I want and whichever level I end up at once I have my key skills at 100 is the level I choose to stay at.
Need to diversify? Start a new character. Don't force your warrior to become a mage. Just make a dedicated mage. ;)

I don't think he'd need to my guy has a daedric 1h sword with max damage and dual wields really I wouldn't see a need to level.

Sorry for my double-post, friends.

To respond to that question, OP, I'd say it's entirely in the way you roleplay the character.

My Nords prefer to gather their own ores and smelt them. Then they'll take their ingots and smith their own gear. (However, I prefer not to improve any of the gear past [Fine])
At the same time, because I love to play a pure Nord, you can keep your witch magic away. I wouldn't touch an enchanted battleaxe with a 10' pole, let alone touch some soul gem that a witch toted around.

I rarely smith or enchant, especially at higher levels.

I've never used the creation systems. They are a buzzkill because they remove the pleasure from making a rare treasure find.

I wouldn't use them if some armor didn't require it.

I quite enjoy smithing and enchanting my own Heavy Armor with my Battlemage character. I do wish that the crafting skills explained how you learned to create the items though. I'd love quests to discover the secrets behind Dwemer, Orchish, or Deadric Smithing.

One of my mains right now is a explorer use only what you find character. It is challenging but possible. One thing I found is that you skip whole sets of equipment for example I went from steel plate to ebony armor as I never found any orcish or dwarven while playing. For a while he was really struggling with one handed weapons damage but just found Umbra (mod sorry if your are console). Now he does very well damage wise.
