Am i playing this wrong?

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 8:46 am

So when oblivion was my first elder scrolls and i basically didn't know much about the series, so i played through the game doing everything i could which is basically what i am doing in Skyrim, but i was just thinking after seeing other peoples play styles that they play with a character who is a member of a certain guild and then has another character for each of the other guilds.

So my question is, is there anything wrong with having one character who does every guild, daedric etc and also role plays different scenarios all with the one character?

Youre not really playing it "wrong" from what i understand a lot of people play different guilds with different characters only for the purpose of role playing. I doubt i will have my warrior join the theives guild so that i can save that idea for a new character. But feel free to join as many as you want with one character.

theres nothing wrong with having an everything character its your game so play it how you like to.

my opinion is this though;

it is a single player RPG so the best way to get the most out of it is to limit your character to a set of rules like these below;

Thief / Assasian - only joins DB + TG hes not powerfull enough to join the companions and not magically versed enough for winterhold.

Warrior / paladin etc etc - companions, army, exploring, helping all the ''goods''

Dragonborn - you do the MQ then proceed from there

mercenary / adventurer - helping out the folk that need it never joining a guild and just generally roaming the world exploring.

you get the idea, to me i get the most out of the game that way. atm im playing a vampire assasian in S4 so he is a member of TG + DB and will do the Stormcloaks quests probably then explore to further his skills, his RP i complecated and generally his RP has been going from morrowind (being a vamp and all).

note: i hardly ever do the TES main quests as i like writting my own story without being the ''chosen one'' :)

^this. I start with one character that I try to do everything( he's runnen at 242hr.) and then I tend to make 4-5 other various play styles.

while there is no wrong way to play i would never pay that way, joining everythign and doing everything destorys the best parts of the game (choice and consequnce, although not present in skyrim without roleplaying, are by far the most interesting and entertaining things in this, and any other, game)

My opinion, nothing more : if you have a job with long hours, kids, responsibilities, and very little time, do everything with one character, fast travel everywhere, 'beat' the game. If you have the luxury of time, make several characters, and for each one think "what would this character do?"
If you don't use magic, and join the College, you get more quests, more content, but don't get to use the benefits of joining, such as advanced training and more spells. Why not make a mage, and not only get access to that content, but also make use those benefits?

No, I do that all the time. Generally, when I role play, I don't limit myself to anything, but if I have to make a choice, I think to myself, "hm, what would my character do" This is why I never really make backstories to my character, just sort of a broad generalization of personality. The only backstory I make is that my character is the descendant or relative in some way to the main character of previous TES games.

My characters take on different worldviews. Good vs evil. Stormcloak vs Imperial. Socialist vs isolationist. Stealthy vs in-your-face. Each playstyle is quite different and enjoyable in it's own way.

Of course not! I just like to think my ShadowMage wouldn't fit in all too well with the companions, so I tend to neglect that guild and do the others. If you feel your char. should do 'em all, then do!

The problem with Bethesda trying to be `all things to all people` is that now, new players find they are somewhat directionless in what they`re supposed to be. So they try to be EVERYTHING. Which of course no one can be really.

The best way to play games like this is what i tell everyone....

Decide what you`d like to be from the start.

Think of your favourite character from any fantasy and try to be like him. If it`s a warrior type like Boromir from LOTR play that, if it`s a Ranger like Stryder, try that or a simple thief type, try that picking the jobs that suit you and skills. Don`t be afraid to pick and choose; you don`t have to do EVERYTHING.

Once you get the gist, you can then build on that.

This is why classes are useful as it helps give people a certain sense of what they are when they start.

I like playing a single character and making him as well rounded as possible. I find that your equipment makes a bigger impact on your ability to play a specific type of character than your perks if you choose perks that are useful for all types such as enchanting and smithing. I will craft mage specific gear and place them in my Archmage quarters in Winterhold, warrior centric gear in Whiterun, and thief gear in Riften etc. When I feel like playing a certain way I'll switch up my gear accordingly. When I choose perks I look at those that will help me regardless of play style and level first, such as those that increase my ability to gather wealth quickly. I started out with a thief/stealth type character with strong stats in archery, light armor, and destruction magic, but I've been able to craft armor and weapons that let me play as a great sword wealding warrior or a mage with 4X -25% (insert mage school) wearing equipment without going through all the repetition inherent in restarting with a new character.

That is such a simple statement, yet also quite profound.

It applies to Skyrim as well as a lot of other things.

Roleplay for me is creating a character with a certain set of morals and values, a way I think they will live. Then as I "play" that character I make choices she would make. Sometimes it's join a certain guild and not another. Case in point, my character was looking to join the Dark Brotherhood, along the way "someone" sent the Brotherhood after her. While "I" wanted to play that questline my character would never stand for working with people that would try to kill her, so "she" killed them. It's fun for me to create the character and then let them loose in the world. Sometimes they surprise me with "their" choices.
