A plea for a "realism" mode.

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 9:57 am

I have been amazed at how much free content and additions Bethesda has provided for Skyrim. If anyone would have told me that we'd have so many things from the Game Jam video actually come to fruition when I first saw it, I would have thought they were crazy. But now look at what we've got so far.

Better water visuals, kill cams for magic and ranged combat, mounted combat is incoming, crossbows, Vampire Lords and I'm sure that we'll see some other things make it in the game before its all said and done. In fact, I'd say that there will be more things from the Game Jam that make it into the game than those that don't before Bethesda's done with Skyrim.

While I think all of these additions are awesome and I appreciate the fact that they're both good and free updates, but the one thing that I would take above all else is some kind of realism/hardcoe/survival mode. I know this topic's been brought up before and PC users will tell me to get the mod, but if you're on the 360 like me or the PS3 that's not really an option.

If you're unsure what I'm referring to I'd like a mod/update to require eating, sleeping, drinking, etc. I would like to see things like crippled limbs as well, but I'd just take the basics if it was too complicated. It seems that for whatever reason this is often brought up by fans but never really talked about by Bethesda and I'm not sure why. It seems like a logical mod and I'm rather surprised that it wasn't in the Game Jam video.

The only problem I can see with this is the fact that all of the updates are things that you cannot toggle. And I guess that might present a problem.

They did this for Fallout: New Vegas and I liked it. I wasn't really surpised that it wasn't included in Skyrim but I did notice its absence.

I'd take the New Vegas hardcoe mode. Something as simple as that. I was VERY surprised it wasn't in Skyrim after all the additions with cooking. As soon as I saw that you could hunt and cook your own food in the game, I thought a hardcoe mode was a foregone conclusion. I was wrong. There's other things too that I wish made it from New Vegas (yes, I know Bethesda didn't make that game), to Skyrim.

In New Vegas you could wear certain outfits to blend in with enemies, like the NCR or the Legion. If you got too close they would figure it out. But how cool would it be to dress up like a forsworn and walk around a camp, avoiding coming to close to one of them.

hardcoe mode would've been an excellent addition to Skyrim.

I been speculating over this topic for a while now. Skyrim needs to have it! Here's my forum page: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1377315-there-needs-to-be-a-realismhardcoe-mode/page__fromsearch__1

I started to play a realism mode for my xbox just by doing all the things you mentioned optionally. I know I won't die if I don't eat for a week but it is still possible to play like that.

Ditto. I wasn't so much surprised (because I know that New Vegas was developed by a different studio), as struck by how strongly I felt its absence. I played New Vegas just before Skyrim came out and I only played NV with hardcoe mode.

Pretending works for some people but its not the same. Being able to feel the effects is alot different than imagining it.

Agreed. Sometimes it is a challenge for me, too. I'm probably on the extreme side of this type of mode. I NEVER, EVER fast travel and I walk if I'm on foot. Literally. I walk, I rarely run. That's why I love my horse so much, and I can't wait for mounted combat. In my world (realism mode) if you literally ran from Whiterun to Solitude, you would be on the verge of collapse.

That's true and I completly agree that we need this but you got to work with what you have.

Same here. I also spend the evenings at the pub, have a few drinks, and listen to the bards sing. I make my follower take the seat next to me and it's great to see him weilding a mug after a while.

You and me both. I wish the pubs were much more lively, and I wish that you could actually see the player eating or drinking. Again, I may be in the minority but I LOVE stuff like this. It adds so much to the game and is the reason that I play Elder Scrolls games for years. I walk everywhere, take my time, stop at inns, sleep, etc.

I've played the game since release and though I've had a number of characters I've completed only the Thieves Guild and the Companions quest line. That's it. This game will take me to Fallout 4, no doubt. And Fallout 4 will take me to The Elder Scrolls VI.

I'm in favor of it, but is it really something that needs to be patched in? You want a mode that requires you to eat and drink and sleep, then do just that. The game rewards you for doing so anyway, what with the bonuses from the various stews and gaining bonus experience while under the Well Rested effect.

Save for the fact that there is no consequences for not doing so, which removes the atmosphere for some people, if Beth has time then I think they should do this, but after they have finished DLC and Patches...

I'd like to see it. Heck, I already have my characters sleep and eat (it seems weird not to). It'd be cool to have consequences for skipping such things.

And (only half-joking) you could get some interesting conjuration spells out of it. "Summon Argonian Ale!"

I loved the hardcoe mode in New Vegas and thought that it would be included in Skyrim. Even though it was not included I still try to eat, sleep often and avoid staying in the icy tundra for too long as it would kill you and this would be another feature apart from dehydration, starvation and sleep derivation.
