Please can we have better AI this time devs

Post » Thu May 26, 2011 11:52 pm

Fallout 3 was a great game it had great atmosphere, good quests and story but one thing that let it down was its AI, being a ex programming student (note ex it wasn't for me) I know how hard it can be to make AI work, but in FO3 they were downright suicidal, geez I know it was a grimy post apocalyptic world out there but I didn't know everybody was so eager to off themselves. If the devs at obsidian could make the enemies a little more clever than before the game would be perfect, maybe we could see them taking cover now and again instead of rushing right at you soaking up bullets like a sponge that is Particularly fond of lead based pain. I just want to hear what you guys think and feel about this aspect.

I would advise them to download Arwen's AI Tweaks, study it, use it...

i completely agree. Super Mutants drop so easily especcially when they charge right at you. i guess thats why they added overlords but you only really see them at higher levels and they realloy dont pose much of a threat :flamethrower:

yeah but I don't wont the devs to cheapen it by just making the enemies soak up more damage, they need to act appropriately towards the player I once saw a super mutant throw a grenade at me then charge into it blowing himself up, I wasn't sure if it was some kind of shock tactic or ai stupidity

I still think raiders must be born stupid seeing that they try and hit a power armor clad avatar of war with a pool que. Seriously, Fallout: New Vegas needs better AI then what we had in FO3.

It is, among other things, it improves enemy AI no end.

As a general rule: "Artificial Intelligence" isn't. There will always be patterns that once identified a human player can exploit to his/her advantage.

That said it would be nice for the NPC to notice some basic things. Like the allies 5' away falling over dead because I'm sneak attacking them from the other side of the cell with a gauss rifle. Walking along their patrol path and finding a dead body of an ally and takeing that as a big hint something is wrong. Knowing that going near a hostile landmine of any kind is a bad thing to do generaly. Not setting off their own tripwire traps. Little things like that would help alot.

I just wish raiders wouldn't attack anyone on sight, should be able to negotiate with them or even join them. Heck, would be sweet if you could pose as a raider if you wore their armor, making it so Raiders were friendly but that others would attack you thinking you're a raider.

Though true, Im fairly sure I didn't exploit the AI so that every time I walk into the general area of some one with a melee weapon he runs at me screaming before i smear his gray matter across the pavement. That's not exploiting, that's medical retardation.

When your followers use the same AI as those dumb raiders who blow off their own legs, it isn't so little after you see your party turned to confetti by a landmine.

Disguises would be awesome, it would be cool if there was some kind of distance based system for instance if you wear raider armour they don't notice you at a distance but might attack if you get too close

eh? They have an ugly habbit of tossing a frag grenade at the wrong time for me. Anyway, they're bringing a knife to a gun fight. Not like they have alot of options open to them. The best option they have is to charge. Running away means they'll die tired.

Except for takeing Fawks on tour for abit, and useing dogmeat's 100 lockpicking skill twice, I don't use followers. Lone wanderer and all that. So far I really don't see that changeing in NV.

They could have waited, hid them selves and tried to at least get the jump on me. A plasma rifle isn't to useful when you have a combat knife through your jugular.

like if you are wearing raider armor and some hat that cover your face, can the raider be in doubt and ask you something to see if you realy is a raider... than with a high speach you can fool the enemy.

Fallout NV will have the same engine of F3, but anyone know if the AI its included at the engine?

A. The Enclave never really made its presence known to the public besides through the radio, which most people just tuned out for GNR.
B. Fawkes himself says "I'm amazed, people trust you enough to not attack me". You have a high enough karma to recruit fawkes at that point, why shouldnt they trust you?

If the point of this thread is to request better AI for Fallout New Vegas, it belongs in this thread: http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1074391

But if, as many of these posts tend toward, the point is to criticize Fallout 3 AI, it is not on charter in this forum.

Either way, it's closed; constructive comments to the "What do you want in New Vegas" thread, other thoughts to /dev/null. Thanks for your understanding.
