Please help: Can't get past Unbound

This is really embarassing, but I can't seem to find Hadvar at start. Where is he?
I jump through the hole in the tower and land in the inn and go outside and down the stairs, but all I see is two archers in the plaza.

What am I missing?

You can also try turning on the quest markers.
Good luck :)

I've already seen that. I think quest markers are on by default when I have only one quest (I use a PS3). I certainly see a Keep marker at the top od the screen, but that doesn't help me find my way to the keep. The courtyard where the execution took place seems to be a closed area, but I guess it can't be.

So, any directions would be helpful.

He should be right there when when you leave the inn you jumped in through from the tower.
There should be a soldier giving orders who wants you to follow him. Hell have an arrow over his head.

Thanks. I haven't seen him. I'll load a save and try again, and restart if that doesn't work.
It's strange. This is my first time on a PS3 and I have a little problem getting used to the controls, but that shouldn't explain this. I just needed to know where I can expect Hadvar to be.

Hadvar is the stormcloak isnt he?
Youll find him after you follow the Imperial from the inn.
He will lead you to a building. There you can choose to follow the Imperial or the Nord.

Hadvar is Imperial. This is from the quest description you referred to above:
After jumping down and exiting the inn, you will find that Helgen has become heavily damaged in quite a short time, with many buildings damaged and burning. As you run into the street, an Imperial soldier, Hadvar, will be assisting civilians to safety. One injured Nord, Torolf, unfortunately fails to escape the carnage, and is killed by Alduin's fire breath. After Alduin flies away to attack other targets, Hadvar will command you to follow him to safety. The soldier will lead you towards Helgen Keep, a large Imperial fort in the village. At the entrance of Helgen Keep, Ralof will catch up with you. You will have to choose to either have Hadvar or Ralof accompany you the rest of the way.
This description is quite clear. My problem is that I don't see him anywhere.

Hm.
You could try reloading a save, or starting over as youre not far into the game yet.
You could also try to make it to the keep yourself.

He should be there when you exit the inn.
Maybe he has fallen through the floor or something.

Anyway, good luck :)

I tried reloading and also restarting. Same result. Some facts:
  • I have a problem jumping far enough to go through the roof of the inn, Could that be a problem?
  • I can only find one exit from the inn, leading into the courtyard where two archers are fighting the Dragon
  • Hadvar is not in that courtyard
  • I can't find my way to the keep on my own. There does not seem to be an exit from that courtyard that isn't blocked by debris
Any help will be appreciated

I could be wrong but I think you actually need to jump into the roof part in order to get to the next area, or else you'll just end up in the same area as the tower you jumped from.

Im stumped.
You could try finding a video on youtube that shows you how things are supposed to go.

It is supposed to work like this:
-Jump from the tower into the inn, make your way to the lower floor and outside.
-An Imperial with an arrow over his head is giving orders and when you approach he tells you to follow him.
-You make your way to the keep together.

I hope you figure it out, good luck :)

What do you mean by "next area"? Am I supposed to be somewhere else than that courtyard with two archers?

You need to jump into the roof part, stand as close to the edge of the tower hole as possible and then jump towards the inn. You don't need to run or anything.

You need to be jumping into the top floor of that damaged building. From there you go to the end of the room and drop through the floor. Then walk out through the hole/door and there will be Hadvar with an NPC and a child NPC. The dragon will land and then you run with him after that.

Sounds like you arent making the jump correctly. Its not time pressured so look our the hole in the tower first to spot the first floor of the building and get your aim right. Im sure you'll be fine once you get into the top floor of that burning building

after you jump through the roof hadvar is gone... you have to follow rolof for a minute or two until right before you enter the start dungeon, at which point you will run into hadvar again and can choose which of the two to follow.
i cant imagine this is what your looking for, but in case you really dont know to follow the other guy.... you have to follow the other guy (rolof) for a minute before seeing hadvar again.

No, Hadvar is the Imperial who you have to follow, Ralof is the Stormcloak who shows up near the keep.

ha.. i fixed that then just decided to edit to nevermind, but you caught me first. sure... the point is that the person your following changes right after you jump through the roof.

From what you've said you haven't actually managed to jump on to the roof of the inn yet. I think that's the key to your problems.

You can also just jump of the roof into the inn next door, then run outside follow the only path you can (hint the dragon keeps appearing) ignore all npc's just keep running and then when you can't go any further enter a building to your right.

Thanks everyone. I made it - into the torture chamber for now. I still have serious problems navigating with the PS3 controls, but that's another issue. I guess I just need to practice.

Don't feel bad - I wandered around quite a bit.... I missed the line about jumping out the tower!

Yogscast has a great funny video about the intro. It is about 17 min, but helped and made me laugh!! Google it! I think you'll get a kick out of it. Or not - ymmv.

Just imagine what kind of fun you'll have once you get past the intro area and suddenly have all of Skyrim sitting in front of you. The first playthrough always feels a bit overwhelming when you first start out.
