http://www.gameranx.com/updates/id/3215/article/pc-is-not-leading-platform-for-games-says-john-carmack/

When asked why the studio opted to design the game for consoles rather than the PC, Carmack provided with a response he knows will make PC gamers unhappy.

“We do not see the PC as the leading platform for games,” said John Carmack, as he explained the company’s reasons for focusing Rage’s development on consoles.

"That statement will enrage some people, but it is hard to characterize it otherwise; both console versions will have larger audiences than the PC version. A high end PC is nearly 10 times as powerful as a console, and we could unquestionably provide a better experience if we chose that as our design point and we were able to expend the same amount of resources on it. Nowadays most of the quality of a game comes from the development effort put into it, not the technology it runs on. A game built with a tenth the resources on a platform 10 times as powerful would be an inferior product in almost all cases.

Okay so...should we just stop buying games from these guys then?

Guess that's all we can do.

saw that too just a moment ago. if it is true then it sounds like a shift AWAY from his whole statement about pc being at the forefront again going forward. sounds almost as if he's defensive about the pc community not just absolutely adoring the new ip. sad thing is..most anyone wants 1 simply thing...for them to fix it without blaming other ppl

I suggest reading the source article, rather than the gameranx quote from a different article:

Here is the complete article that gameranx was quoting from: http://kotaku.com/5847761/why-was-the-pc-launch-of-rage-such-a-cluster

Note that the quote from gameranx is mischaracterizing the actual question he was asked in the interview.

When asked why the studio opted to design the game for consoles rather than the PC...

The actual question Kotaku asked him was:

Does id still see the PC as the leading platform to make games for?

His response:

"You can choose to design a game around the specs of a high-end PC and make console versions that fail to hit the design point, or design around the specs of the consoles and have a high-end PC provide incremental quality improvements," Carmack replied. "We chose the latter. We do not see the PC as the leading platform for games," Carmack added. "That statement will enrage some people, but it is hard to characterize it otherwise; both console versions will have larger audiences than the PC version. A high end PC is nearly 10 times as powerful as a console, and we could unquestionably provide a better experience if we chose that as our design point and we were able to expend the same amount of resources on it. as if they even care.

It has already been said earlier that RAGE is first and foremost, a console game.Consoles are now a priority for them,PC's are long gone.

Why do you think they aren't doing quake anymore?Cause they are now a full console developer.

That aint giving reason why pc customers should get crappier product, in my eyes thats bad attitude. Pc games shouldnt be kicked down, as most of them are console gamers too, its just bad business.
Also word spreads fast these days... Anyway I Truly hope Im wrong and id/beth gives some love pc too!!

That is disappointing. They were pioneers about PC gaming. Now they don't see PC as a viable gaming platform. Sad. I won't be surprised if Doom 4 comes out as a console exclusive or just a console port for PC. I won't spend my money on id games anymore. And I sure as hell won't get a console, since I hate the damn thing. Farewell id software.

Makes sense. I'm thinking the fact that we will pay $60 for a console game, and really won't spend any more on a PC game, pretty much sealed our fate.

I just wish Carmack could strong-arm Microsoft into adding support for a mouse and keyboard!

Carmack was also quoted this summer saying their biggest mistake with Rage was leaning too far towards console development. The id tech 5 was specifically designed to make it easy to create games and port them to any system including the iPhone and I'm sure if they could sell one that plays on your alarm clock they'd do that too.

PC gaming has always been on the decline since I can remember an I'm 30?

Not sure why this would be a surprise to anyone?

So, they sold out, and now they've screwed themselves.

Amusing.

However you feel about the Kotaku interview, and whatever tech issues you might have experienced, consider the following:

1. They have been working around the clock with AMD and NVIDIA to resolve any driver issues - if you are still having trouble stay tuned to the tech support subforum
2. Patch is coming very soon with more graphics settings options
3. The game looks much better obviously at 1920x1080 resolution or higher than 1280x720 resolution
4. 64-bit executable is coming soon for RAGE
5. Sophisticated modding tool coming soon for RAGE

How many PC games have been released in the past 12 months with 64-bit executable and official mod tools? That at least says something about showing some love for PC gamers.

At the moment it seams the primary group of players having difficulty are those of us with AMD cards and in particular with AMD card + dual core processor. The id team and AMD engineers are aware of this and working on it.

In the real world it's about making as much money for yourselves and the publishers and other people that were promised as such

Game devs don't make games just for fun
money comes first that money needed to allow for more great games to be published!

Hence it's Business first always

I'm sure they sold out a long time ago, that wasn't really the point.

Thanks for the obvious insight, though.
