Porting FO3 campaign to NV?

Has anyone tried to do this yet? I imagine most of the files would be compatible...

...not another one.

It's a breach of the EULA to port assets from FO3 to FNV (although most of the assets from FO3 are in FNV).

If you want to play FO3....why not just play FO3?

Not worth the trouble to re-build all the parts that can't be ported... so many triggers, etc.

First off, illegal, second, not worth it. Not by a long shot.

The amount of work would be ridiculous, especially when you can just play Fallout 3. Oh, and no, most of the assets from FO3 are not in NV, there's a ton missing that I could use for mod projects, but sadly don't have access to.

Why is it illegal?

Isnt the combat mechanics in NV better? In FO3, NPCs in power armor keep getting killed by assault rifle fire.

It's not allowed to take assets from one game and use them in another game, even if the games and assets are owned by the same company.

It's not illegal, but it is against the EULA and would breach various licensing agreements Bethesda have (I'd be surprised if they licensed Liam Neeson's voice for a second game just so you could use him in a mod, for example). As such we're not allowed to discuss it on sites strongly associated to Bethesda, like their official forums.

Also as everyone else has pointed out, it'd be a shedload of work and is kind of pointless when there's already mods for FO3 that implement similar combat mechanics to NV and have been for quite some time (http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13325).

Is it possible? Yes. Does everything work? Mostly. Is it worth the effort? Not at all.

Aside from all the missing data not present in FalloutNV, copying it over from Fallout 3 isn't the begining of the problems. You would need a major patch to rip out the starting quests, swap out clutter so you don't have 2 entries and thus 2 items of everything. Armor still uses DR, so that would need to be adjusted. The list just goes on.

I'm willing to bet that the claims of "you have to redo everything!" are mostly exaggerations.

As Bethesda has yet to clamp down on the "DLC armours" mod that was released some time ago, I think it's fair to say that it's a mod like this wouldn't be too bad - as long as you don't go around posting modified versions of the F3 ESM and data files.

If you make a port to NV so that you can play F3 without buying it, I'm pretty sure Bethesda would do something about it. That said, a port like that would only be illegal if it distributed actual F3 resources (meshes, textures, etc). Making a port filled with placeholders, which would require you to extract the resources from your F3 BSAs yourself would be legal.

People never seem to let abject ignorance of a topic get in their way of their commenting on it.
The issue is not, and has never been, the legality. It's illegal to redistribute resources, yes, that's never been in doubt. The issue is Bethesda cannot be seen to condone or encourage the use of content that it licensed for one game (FO3) in another game it has not licensed it for (FNV). We can do it legally (it's against the EULA but that's not worth much), we simply can't discuss it on their official forums, and it is liable to be removed from sites strongly associated with Bethesda (e.g. Nexus).

I know, I really wish ignorant people would just refrain from posting. Take your post for instance, it is, ironically enough, a prime example of what happens when they don't do that. It's full of false premises and unsubstantiated claims. Now pay attention so you can prevent that in the future:

[The issue is not, and has never been, the legality.]
False. The issue of legality has been indeed raised. You in fact, replied to one post raising it. Which makes this claim in particular all the more laughable :whistling:

[The issue is Bethesda cannot be seen to condone or encourage the use of content that it licensed for one game (FO3) in another game it has not licensed it for (FNV).]
1st: It's completely beyond me why you consider yourself entitled to arbitrarily determine what the issue is or is not in a thread which you haven't created nor the main poster
2nd: Have you any evidence of that, or are you just guessing what Bethesda can or cannot do? That's at any rate a moot point. If content is not being distributed there's nothing wrong, or at least Bethesda doesn't think so. There are countless instances of mods that use unlicensed content being discussed in this forum, and none of them have been shut down. If you need a quick example, mods that port STALKER armors into F3.

The rest of your post pretty much falls into the above snipets' replies. On another note, my post's main purpose was to respond to the claim Bethesda probably wouldn't act if the port were released. You were so eager to insult me you apparently missed that. So you might want to try and read other people's posts more carefully before replying, specially if your reply is going to be aggressive.

Well, that's it. Hopefully you learned your lesson and won't do it again! :goodjob: <3

While I applaud TTT for making the mod, it was inspired by the dynamics of the earlier Fallouts. New Vegas just re-added it. Many of the new additions were partially there in the old Fallouts.

They're raising nonissues. EULAs aren't legally binding in many countries, and are often unenforcable even when they are. Copying content on your own computer for personal use is legal. Claiming something is an issue does not make it one, particularly when past port projects haven't recieved any form of legal challenge.

[The issue is Bethesda cannot be seen to condone or encourage the use of content that it licensed for one game (FO3) in another game it has not licensed it for (FNV).]

The STALKER devs granted permission to reuse their content, actually. That'd be the only mod discussed here that uses ported content, all the rest go to Fallout3Underground. There are mods on Nexus that use ported Fallout 3 content, but as small mods porting minimal amounts of content with relatively small numbers of downloads they don't land on the PR radar. Big projects like a full port? Yes. I worked on Morroblivion, Bethesda had it taken down from Nexus and banned from discussion here. Admittedly I can't say for absolute 100% sure that it's down to licensing issues, but given their language and responses to the various Morroblivion project groups that's the only real contender. It's either that, or they're simply jerks who hate fun; no other arguments fit.

The thread is the Nth thread about making a port. I don't need to be the OP or main poster to say what the issues involved in making a port are.

The rest of your post pretty much falls into the above snipets' replies. On another note, my post's main purpose was to respond to the claim Bethesda probably wouldn't act if the port were released. Bethesda have acted on ports in the past, that don't redistribute content- look at Morroblivion. Your post implied they would only care if the port did redistribute content which is, as a matter of record, not true.

I think I'm entitled to get a bit annoyed when this thread pops up for the dozenth time with exactly the same content as ever, no?

Those mods don't use altered meshes, which is what you got with the pre-order packs. The Merc pack had a metal armor without shoulders for example. The mod simply gives you regular metal armor. Why there'd be any rule against using the same stats on an armor sets just blows my mind, it's using Bethesda owned resources that's not allowed, and the DLC fell under that as it's not part of the vanilla New Vegas game.

EDIT: Also, the constant pissing contest in topics like this is starting to annoy me.

I believe he was referring to http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34987 mod. It encourages porting FO3 content, but then only in small amounts and has limited distribution. If it got included in something large like say as a FOOK patch, something would probably be done about it.

Morroblivion still exists, just not on the nexus or these forums, and it's not even on some hidden pirate site, it is on a site that is named morroblivion, so i find it hard to believe that it's truly illegal or that Beth cares THAT much if they let it continue that openly.

Again; there's no legal problems with ports, you simply can't request them on Bethesda's forums. Which is where we are, in a thread where someone's asking for a FO3->FNV port. You can see why I get irate when I have to repeat myself so much?

OK. Enough. You cannot take the assets from one game and use them in another. What you do on your own computer is up to you, we just do not want it discussed on these forums.
