Possible Depression?

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 1:07 am

So for the past 4 months I've been having on and off feelings of worthlessness, uselessness, hoplessness, typical depression feelings. Sometimes they get REALLY bad to the point where I'm afraid I'll hurt myself. I am 90% sure its a form of depression but the thing is that unlike most depression types these feelings dont persist for weeks at a time, the most has been a couple days, then I go back to "normal" and the next day its back to feeling like crap. I understand people get down in the dumps at points in life but this is literally an every other day thing and its getting pretty bad.

So, I guess my question is does anyone think this could be a form of depression? I know most of you arent mental health professionals but it doesnt hurt to get others opinions on this issue. Thanks ahead of time :)

Speak to your doctor: you'll get a much better answer than a bunch of miscreants on a games forum! Depression is serious, though, so if you suspect you've got it, don't muck about: it's much harder to get rid of if you leave it too late.

Thanks, I'm really considering seeing someone about it. I've been in the mindset of "oh I cant have depression, I'll get over it" but that only gets you so far.

That is usually my normal. But if you think it's a serious problem then go see a doctor or someone who is not the internet.

It doesn't need to be present all day, everyday, just most of the day most days. When it comes to mental health, most disorders are chiefly defined by their impact on one's quality of life; If you're happy and functioning fine, you're healthy; If you're having trouble working/studying/getting chores done/etc. or finding it difficult to get enjoyment out of life, it is worth seeing a professional. Either you'll find out what's wrong and be able to do something about it, or find out nothing's wrong and simply loose a chunk out of your wallet :P.

Also, if you're not satisfied with one doctor, feel free to try another (within reason).

Depends. Lots of people go through a really weird emotional roller coaster when they're teenagers and young advlts. Body still trying to get the mix of neurotransmitters and hormones right.

Consult a therapist. seriously, or even just look at some kind of Therapy FAQ before looking for a therapist or some one to talk to.

I strongly second the members who have urged you to see a doctor - see your family physician at the very least - they can make recommendations. It could be depression, could be a physical/hormonal thing. Just struggling along with the feelings you described does not have to happen. There are a lot of different avenues to help identify what might be dogging you and help you deal with it.

I am going to close the thread though and hope that you take the advice and seek help with the situation. However, these forums have had a history of these kinds of threads turning into a soapbox for people who are not experienced with issues like depression and offering unhelpful and sometimes hurtful commentary.

Please take care of yourself first and foremost. :hugs:
