Possible idea for lod problems....

Post » Thu Jun 21, 2012 8:12 am

Hi I do not script much but I would like to know if it would be doable to create a reference to wich link all the items to be seen at distance , place the reference distant from the object and put a preloader script for it so that loads the items and relative lods before getting close and wait the usual sudden popup ?

I think it would only work if Player entered an enclosed area through a relatively narrow opening. An example would be walking through a narrow canyon or cave entrance, which would have a triggerBox (or your scripted object) right there. That would trigger the objects further inside the cave, or the valley one would be entering.

I say it would have to be enclosed because you'd have to place a million objects completely surrounding your area... and that's just way too much; especially if they're all scripted. What you're asking for is essentially already done with the LOD system... I think the problem is that the CK doesn't generate the necessary files ('update lod' doesn't create a single thing).

There are LOD files which are basically collections of various large statics' LOD geometry. Somehow they all get merged into whichever area's LOD file. THIS is the part CK doesn't do... and I haven't gotten far enough to try manually 'injecting' the custom LOD geometry into one of those files yet. The files I'm referring to here are NOT NIF files per se, but BTR files (which are NIFs renamed with specific data inside them). It's been a little while since I found this stuff, so I may be mistaken about the BTR, but I know there is something OTHER than the normal _lod.nif files which contain building geometry.

I am actually looking for a way to Increase the Lod distance loading so .... usually the 1st mesh ( not lod ) gets loaded only when you are almoust colliding with it .... I want instead like is doable in the CK to set the distance of lod loading bigger so that the main mesh is visible at longer distances befoure turning into a lod ....

is there a way to do that?

I think that can be done with an ini edit.

The gridsToLoad is more for entire cells off in the distance, but yes... that'll lengthen the distance one can see. Then there's the sliders (in-game and in the 'options' of the Skyrim Launcher), but I think they just set max/min... I dunno if the in-betweens are hard-coded or somehow recalculated for each level based on the sliders. My system is low-medium end, so I don't play with max'd out LOD and whatnot...

As far as changing the exact distances at which each subsequent LOD is triggered... I'm not sure. It surely SOUNDS like there should be! I haven't gotten into tweakin out the INI in Skyrim like I did for Obliv... so I've seen very little on different settings, and remember none that could help.
