i started playing with occasional crashes, figuring it would be due to bugs etc, then i used nvidia inspector to add falloutnv.exe to the fallout3 profile (to fix the flashing orbs that appeared sometimes, gtx 400 series cards experience this quite frequently it seems), it fixed it alright, but also gave me a new nvd3dum.dll crash more and more until the game wouldnt even start up without instantly crashing, updated to the new 260.89 whql drivers = no more nvd3dum.dll crashes, so i thought great, everythings fine now..

it wasnt, it started crashing at some areas on the map and kept doing this at the same spots over and over.. only these crashes showed falloutnv.exe in the crash rapport, which was pretty vague, could be anything right? so i searched my way through numerous solutions on google and found one solution that had me playing just now for hours without a single crash, it seems many games released lately dont like the Aero theme that you can use on win7, and since im not planning to enable/disbale the theme every time i play a game, i found out you can disable it for an executable in its properties, so i wont keep you any longer; here it is:

right click on FalloutNV.exe and go to properties, click the compatibility tab, and check "Disable desktop composition", (i also checked run as admin, but dont think this will improve anything, for the fact that im logged in as admin)

played for 2 hours+ straight without any crash, i hope it fixes the crashing for other people as well

I was doing all the suggested fixes that people were throwing out but unfortunately none of them were working.

So I reset everything to default again and simply disabled Windows Aero.

Been playing for 6 hours uninteruppted in one glorious sitting.

Yes this is good advice.
Another (simpler) way to do this is to right-click on your Win7 desktop > Personalize, then select 'Windows Classic" theme.
Don't worry, your other Aero theme will still be right in there, when you finish playing...

Ill try this when I get home. Perhaps it will solve my problems as well. Cant belive I didnt think of it(although I was planning on trying compability settings).

tbh, i find it easier to just use the "composition" check, as it will disable aero when the game is launched (alt-tab out of the game and you'll see the classic theme on every window), and auto-enable's it when you close it
