When FONV would run, it was great. But it seemed randomly..sometimes 5 minutes, sometimes 45 minutes after starting, it would crash to desktop, I'd get a rather obnoxious clicking sound through the speakers, and I'd have to reboot.
I'm using w7 64-bit with an Asus Xonar D1 sound card. I know it's not the shiniest sound card available, but it's one of the best for multiplatform use (I use linux for working).
I'll skip over everything I tried to troubleshoot and skip to the solution:
In the Xonar audio center, there's an option to enable/disable "GX". Turned it off, and I haven't crashed since. I believe it's similar to Eax, so..
check your sound card's control panel and disable advanced sound options (eax, gx, etc.)
Granted, I use a pair of rather high quality headphones, but I haven't noticed any difference in sound quality and haven't crashed once since
this change to my settings.
Hope it helps... somebody.
