Is it possible to uninstall a game patch?

Post » Sun May 29, 2011 1:07 am

I recently bought Fallout 3 off Steam, it didn't work, found out the patch may be the problem, reinstalled the game on dial-up (painful) and selected the 'do not automatically uptade game." Re-installed, game didn't work, turns out, for some reason, 'automatically update this game' was re-checked. Is there any way to remove patches without having to delete the whole game and re-install?

Please help!

I know this is about a Fallout game but I've put it in here because its more about installing/uninstalling patches, so yep.

You cannot rollback a Steam without a special patch from the developer as far as I know. When Steam first downloads FO3 (or any game) it downloads the original game files and all of the patches, there is no way to set which patches you are using. Therefore it ensures a downloaded game is always the most up to date, but you cannot choose which patches are or are not installed.

Oh, damn. Well, thanks for the reply :)

I've emailed both Bethesda and Steam about this...Hopefully they can shed some light. This is really annoying as I sacrificed food money for a week for this game and now I can't play it at all. Le sigh.

Steam's 'do not update' is a big FailWhale for many people, never rely on it.

On some games there's ways around it IF you purchase the game before it gets/has any patches (eg, a brand new game) - although it means you can only play the game in question while "offline." But I'd guess Fo3 on Steam comes in the 'already patched' flavor and thus not possible, as already mentioned.

Yep. Stuck with the fully updated version. Running in windowed mode worked, then I updated my drivers and now I can run it fullscreen, but now I'm just getting crashes every minute or so. I've come to the conclusion that it's just an issue with Windows 7. Sigh.

Fallout 3 doesn't work on Windows 7? The last patch was 2 years ago and Beth still hasn't released any compatibility hotfix?

'pparently not. I've spent hours and hours and hours (no exaggeration, at least 4 hours straight today) searching for any kind of fix. Anyway. Off trying to find help in the technical support forums everywhere. Gonna go find a mod to lock this since I think it's a bit irrelevant now. I bet it's something really obvious causing this crash darnit.

Fallout 3 works fine with Windows 7. However, there are many issues that usually cause it to crash unless you fix them. One fix worth noting is the Multicore CPU modification to the Fallout3.ini. If you search the Hardware and Software section for Fallout3 you should find some solution.

Another problem is the radio having sound "corruption" which is also fixable.
