Post Limit Policy

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 11:44 pm

I dont get why the moderators close the most popular threads because of the post limit.

I was reading the "I hate level scaling. Why wont they just get rid of it" and enjoying the discussion, then, suddenly, the thread is locked because reached the post limit (200 I guess).

Of course the most relevant threads (or the polemic ones) will have lots of posts. For me, make no sense close them, because that obliges the OP to start another one.

If they need to be close because of some technical reason, nevermind my complain.

It strains the website to hold a thread with 100's of pages, maybe you could of posted this is a community general instead of skyrim general as well.

It used to be a technical reason waayy back in the day. I believe they do it now because it's more organised and when the new thread is made then conversation is back on track (the longer a thread goes on the more off-topic it becomes.)

I've always admired the post limits. Have you ever been to other forums where a thread with potentially useful info is a 1000 pages long? It's such a chore to sift through that.

This, one of the many reasons I don't like the B.Net forums anymore.

If the moderators say not to, don't start a new thread.

But if, say, the post were "Favorite Dungeon?", and the locking was "post limit", it is usually acceptable to start "Favorite Dungeons Thread #2", and link to the original.
The moderator staff is very good about making it clear when they want a topic to go away, and why (usually, because it's creating hostility), and when it is merely a post count limit.

That said, I think the post limit also has to do with allowing the database to dump posts after so many months. Think of the old TES suggestions threads, of which there were well over 100 threads. At any one time, there were about 20 still in the database. imagine keeping the previous 120 threads, because they were all in an active thread.

This!

I used to browse BNet as much as I browsed CD...but the amount of spam, and the lack of a post limit, make it impossible to find any info without starting a new thread!
