Post 1.4... I wanna play this game again

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 8:50 pm

A short presentation:

I'm from: Denmark

I play on: PS3

I got the game on: 11.11.11

I've played this game with: Only 1 character the whole time

I played a: Male Khajit

My character was: A Thief / Archer

I played for: 127 hours // 15 MB savefile

So... where to begin?

My first Skyrim experience was completely destroyed by all those annoyances that hit the PS3 version at launch.

With a bug-list so big, it's not worth mentioning, and because of the glaring lies Bethesda's PR had told about the PS3 version I was so dissapointed that I came here to vent off some steam... That was when patch 1.2 didn't fix ANYTHING at all.

Then I got banned... but I regularly came back to see whether a new patch was released. And now its here:

/TL:DR - Skyrim at launch svcked // it should be better now post 1.4!!

Here's my question:

I got super bored with playing a thief / archer type character... In my new run, what would you veterans suggest I'd do?

I usually NEVER play a mage-type, mostly because I despise hotkeys / wards / potions and all that stuff, but is it manageable in Skyrim?

//Cheers guys

On my first playthrough, I found a jack-of-all trades a fun playthough.

focus on heavy armor, one handed, archery, smithing, enchanting, and alchemy. perhaps even some shield skills like blocking arrows and resisting spells by 50%. Maybe even some sneak perks to create the perfect defencive/offencive character. Anytime you can create -100% spell cost clothing sets with this character if you ever want to play with spells, or you could collect staffs that require only you recharge them. No skills required at all.

Or, you could role play a character. Like really get into that whole Nord dragonborn feel using ONLY a two handed sword and shouts wearing heavy dragonbone armor. No archery, no stealth.
Maybe even an orc finding his way to an orc settlement in Skyrim.
Have fun.

#BenDover

Thank for the advice. I see where you are coming from, but I'm really done planning 'how I want it to be'. I'd rather hear about what kind of character, other people had succes or fun with playing as, for inspiration.

For example I've heard that, trivial as it may seem, the two-handed heavyhitting orc is a much more fun character than a stealthy assassin to play? Is this true?

I have had 1 playthrough (~100 hours) with a male Altmer pure desctruction mage.

I had great fun and the game was kind of challenging all the way through (on expert) and I ended around level 34.

Btw. playing on PC with a couple of mods (most notably graphic enhancers and SkyUI), so that might change the experience compared to PS3?

Your answer is completely in line with your name... no offense though, but I'm ASKING for opinions!

#Cralle: Sounds really neat, though I can't spice up my game with mods, and destruction svcks in vanilla... or so I've heard.

Don't believe everything you hear (until you have tried it yourself). I have no magic mods installed, so playing with "vanilla" magic.

I think the reason why I enjoyed playing destruction mage was that I was completely true to the class, so I did not gain that many levels i any of the other perks, and therefore never vent above level 34. As I heard, the reason why people think destruction svcks is that it does not level well in the higher levels (above 50), so as long as you are not powergaming and having a goal of getting as high in levels as possible, you should be fine with a pure mage (or at least, I was :) ).

Being a mage is great fun if you use a variety of skills - unfortunately you can't expect Destruction to be your main means of dealing damage at mid-to-late levels as it scales terribly, meaning that the skill is eventually pretty obsolete (Destruction's only purpose is to deal damage, but it's outclassed in that respect by Conjuration and even Illusion [indirectly], each of which have other purposes too). It's a great skill (vanilla) for the first 20 or so levels though.

If you go with a healthy mix of all the magic skills, you'll have a blast. Doesn't matter which race you choose, but since you're after opinions, I'll say... Orc. Just to be different.

The best races for benefits to magic users are the Altmer, Breton, Dunmer, and Nord, with the Altmer being pretty much the best for aggressive casters.

Altmer start with an extra 5 levels' worth of magicka, and have a daily power that increases magic regen. Bretons are better suited to defensive styles, with 25% magicka resistance and a daily power that absorbs magicka damage to refill magicka. The Dunmer and Nords have elemental resistances that will help make either fire or frost magic less harmful, respectively.

I've most often gone with a Breton because I really like the magic resistance, especially when it used to be 50%. I find that I benefit from that further than from a larger magicka pool.
