Interview with Josh Sawyer...

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:55 am

Bethesda Game Studios has stated that they are making the engine a lot better for their next game, which is likely TESV. For Fallout 4, expect a really different engine(hopefully).

They've been so hush-hush over at Bethesda about their newest project (I'm assuming its TESV) its probably got that new engine running like a charm for it, I bet thats why they don't want to show anything yet. :tops:

Just seeing Fallout New Vegas I can't wait to see what the Fallout series will do next. :)

Deathclaws, high powered radscorpions and mirelurks, I don't agree with that. Animals and creatures don't carry anything good except for body parts to sell and make makeshift weapons with for obvious reasons.

They don't have pockets and I don't imagine they go around eating guns and currency for you to rip out of their stomach.

The body parts of the high powered critters could be worth more, or traded for better ammo/weapons with a certain merchant or settlement. And, the experience you get should be more, but I would think you would have to have less of them to balance things.

However, other then maybe a random small item they may have scarfed up and not digested or passed yet, critters should not have loot.

Although, perhaps the currency never passes in the digestive track, so they collect all the coins of all the people they ate before you got there.....

True, but only one of them is in full production.

There was also a part in there about the gatling "gun" being added to energy.

Gatlings in energy?

They probably meant Gatling Laser, which was formerly part of the "Big Guns" grouping in FO3. Although size wise it is indeed a "big gun", technically it shoots laser beams which falls under energy.

I enjoyed this interview alot, like most of the FNV interviews we have seen thus far. I couldn't help but to feel a little bad for Josh though, perhaps for all of em in the industry, in that there is so little "game security". I've worked on big 4-year projects at work that got cancelled and that svcked hard, I can only imagine the svckage involved with loosing a game you've poured your heart into. The way he describes his attachment to Fallout hints at 1000 scars..

JS: ... Because we know that some people don't want to do side content, we do scale the main quest quite a bit in terms of difficulty.

The "sidecontent" stuff sounds swell. I do hope, though, that they didn't make the MQ a total cakewalk with the scaling. I mean, would it be so bad to require the player to play the game they are offered in order to complete it? Oh well, I guess I'm fine with it nonetheless.

Talking about what you can scavenge I hope you can take Radscorpion carapace and make armor out of it.

You'll be able to play enormous New Vegas until DLCs come out. Why worry?

Yeah it looks like we are getting shafted again, poor us, back on topic in the first 2 fallout's you had less powerful enemies in the north more powerful in the south, in fallout 3 you had less powerful in the south, more powerful in the north, JS said in one interview that now in NV you have more powerful in the north, which would have been F1 and F2's south, I like the little details they paid attention to.

Yaaay! [censored] LEVEL SCALING! I hate it, it kills the immersion and makes you feel as the centre of the world (Which you aren't, but I hope you already knew that)
Also, I love this part:
GU: What was behind the decision to use the same engine again, without trying to push the game further graphically?

JS: It was mostly time. Basically this is not a sequel, it's a standalone project. In many ways we've referred to it as the Vice City of the Fallout franchise. So it's really more focused on new content, new characters, and tweaks to gameplay, as opposed to completely reinventing what's already been done.

I want a Deathclaw companion! No seriously, Behemoths and deathclaws were not worth fighting difficulty over experience gained. You kill a behemoth, you get as much XP as killing 3 supermutant. It's just not right.

Quality interview.... Nice to see an interviewer that doesn't just spit out all the same garbled questions as everyone else.
