fast travel and hardcoe mode

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 8:07 pm

Well this is my first post on here, so here I go.

How will fast travel work with hardcoe mode? Will you be unable to? Will you automaticaly lose food and water depending on the distance? Or maybe you should be limited to how many times you can do it. I just think it kinda contradicts hardcoe mode when you just fast travel everywhere later on in the game.

From what's been said, you can still fast travel in hardcoe mode but the food, water and sleep meters will be adjusted accordingly as time will still pass while fast travelling.

Edit: What we don't know yet is what happens if one of your meters hits or nears the critical point while fast travelling or even if it will allow you to fast travel if the system determines that one of them will hit the critical point while fast travelling.

Hmm the poll option for the metro tunnels, I think is not required as from what I know of Vegas, it doesn't have any Metro systems although it does have a huge comprehensive storm drain/sewer system.

Well thanks for the heads up I didn't know that. Well maybe you will have 2 mins to find food, sleep, or something.

And about the poll i edited so its talking about FO3 not NV. Like how can you know if you never played it :)

I was going by the real Las Vegas, which I think we can presume is the template for New Vegas and as such it's probable that it won't have a Metro system much like Las Vegas doesn't.

I posted my idea for hardcoe fast travel in http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1111820-hoping-for-econemy-improvements-in-fnv/. My idea is to not have fast travel like it was is Fo3, but instead you would have to pay for safe passage through a travel service. Each city or major settlement would have one or more travel agents that you visit, pay a fee and fast travel to another city or settlement. You can pay extra for safe travel to a destination outside of their travel route.

As I suggested in the "What do you want in New Vegas" thread, I mentioned that Fast Travel should rather make you travel on the map like in FO1 - 2, instead of teleporting.

I think it would be cool if you couldn't fast travel in hardcoe mode.

So don't do it. However I DO want it in hardcoe, and [censored] anyone who disagrees with me.

Yeah, as you are traveling, you run the risk of running into a random event, which will randomly stop you in a point before your destination. You could be ambushed by super mutants/raiders and other stuff like that.

Don't use fast travel if you don't want. Its in for people that want to use it. You can play the entire game forever and never use it.

Opinions are fun!

I would actually love a toggle option at the start of the game.
  • Full fast travel
  • Limited fast-travel (you can only fast-travel from friendly settlements/towns/cities/outposts to friendly settlements/towns/cities/outposts.)
  • No fast-travel

They've said that fast travel will function as in FO3. An appropriate amount of in-game time passes while you travel, so upon arrival your HC meters will be depleted accordingly (similar to chem effects wearing off upon arrival in FO3). If this drops any meter below a critical point, you will incur the stat penalties. There are probably multiple levels of stat penalties as your meters drop, similar to the various levels of radiation poisoning.

I doubt you will die on arrival unless you were very low on HP before traveling. Once your thirst or hunger meter gets low, I suspect you'll start losing some number of HP per second rather than die immediately, allowing you time to find a sink, toilet, or dirty puddle, or to scarf down some pre-war food.

Just like FO3 allowed chem effects to get you to your destination (a strength-buff to deal with over-encumbrance never wore off part-way through fast traveling), I expect that NV will allow you to arrive before applying the stat penalties--what I mean is I don't think they'll take away any HP for the time spent traveling, the penalty will start to apply after you arrive. Perhaps you will not be able to fast-travel if your hunger or thirst meter is too low, like how you can't fast travel while over-encumbered.

:D That's basically what I was thinkin too lol

-I don't understand why some ppl are bein a little agressive towards me though, I never said anything about everyone having to play that way or anything even close to that so back off man lol

Some people are quite anol lol

Anyways to stay on topic like the fishy said I think that would be a cool option for hardcoe mode, but in no way expect it the game is basically finished and I can't wait to play it.
But again a sweet idea :)

I will never understand this fascination with time-lapse.

"Fast Travel" (from the player's perspective), is ~or should be, no different than say... cryo-sleep on a deep space flight; the trip is expected to be tedious and uneventful, so you skip it. and resume life, once you arrive.

*FO3 [unfortunately] had no option for unexpected events. :(

** You know... It could be worked so that PC's risk a bit of random damage (most likely none or just a little), any time they use "Fast Travel"; as well as possible random encounters (both hostile and friendly/neutral). This would be my preferred option.. so long as the odds of damage start low and increase with the distance traveled ~extra points to the developer who accounts for terrain dealing more or less (or differing) potential damage.
