Drugs and Perception

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 7:06 pm

one good reason why games portray fire rocket launchers into civilians so easily but not six and drugs is.

six and Drugs are far more acessible, than RPG's, Gernades, Weapons, Vehicles, Tanks, Bombs etc etc to Children and Minors, a Kid coudl only dream (if that be) of running down scores of hapless souls with impunity. that takes learning, six and drugs, 1-2-3 Done, so the game industry do their best to not protray this on our Impressionable little young ones, Older gamers already have their heads screwed on, or off and can't really use "but I was influenced by GTA" excuse because they are assumed to have developed rational, while a child MAY get away with such an excuse.

We dont want to give Children (17 and under) and excuse to do these things now do we? which is why we portay nearly impossible things to acquire in life so readily and easily than we would six and drugs, which is far more obtainable at said ages.

Does that clear up your thoughts, dont think of America/Game industries around the world that censor six and drugs as Hypocrites.

I have never really though about it in that way, well done sir!

They can do what some stores do like Target. When I got a game there once (SOCOM 3) the cashier had to see ID to see if I was of age and had to swipe it into the computer. So if a kid got their parents to buy a game rated M (or buy it themself), but the parents doesn't know much about games, They will then say " Hold up! Why you need to see my ID whats in this game?" So I think that should go on in all stores, even Gamestop/ EB Games. But then there will be a drop in sales.

It would be cool at first but it would get very annoying after awhile. Also this is just another example of double standards.

Plain and simple, it would add immersion but detract (pretty sure that's not a word) from the gameplay. Why not just make it an option?

As for those who say it (drug animations) shouldn't be there, the game is 17+ for a REASON. Most places (at least in the United States) require an ID or a parent, so it should be all on the parent; especially since more and more old school gamers are steadily becoming parents. I grew up during the time of GTA: SA contoversy and played my first GTA game when I was 11, but my parents knew what the game was about and they figured I could handle it. While there are (more or less necessary) rateings, ultimately it should be based on maturity, but that's for the parent to decide and be responsible for.

Regardless, there are mods for a reason. Don't have a PC? Me neither, but at least you can look forward to the day you have that kind of money.

Actually, some of us don't want them in there because it would be tedious and annoying to sit through an animation sequence each time we use a drug.

The NPC smoking animation in FO3 teaches kids to smoke and it should be retconned out of the game!!!

Kidding of course.

As always, it's up to the parents and not the censors to monitor and determine what their kids and even teens that fall below the "mature" rating, should and should not be playing. Informed parents and guardians should definitely read up and follow the http://www.esrb.org/ratings/ratings_guide.jsp guidelines (or whatever your region's "rating" equivalent is) when purchasing games for their dependents.

Publishers and developers are usually deterred from going "overboard" because an "advlts Only" rating usually means the mainstream distributors will refuse to carry it, which means it will significantly hurt their sales so they have to be watchful of their own content and not be too violent, too sixual, be inundated with drug/alcohol references or some overbearing combination of the three...

I'm not fussed if it's in there or not, but I always found it funny how I would get ID'd (read: denied) for advlt films and video games, yet I was checking out books by Irvin Welsh, Brett Easton Ellis etc which were far more brutal and/or graphic than any other media would get away with
Also, considering that addiction is addressed in-game, it doesn't even seem to glamourise drugs that much. Can you get addicted to alcohol in-game? I've never tested to see.

Yup. I liked the Strength boost, so I always chucked a beer before fights. Quickly got addicted :P

I don't think any of you guys are giving credit to the creators here, if they were to implement an animation they probably would make it easily skippable. So you pull out the drug and as long as you only stand there would the animation keep going, if you were to move either axis, take damage, blah blah blah, the animation would end almost instantly.

Well that would feel weird...
I mean, imagine pulling out a psycho and just as you're about to stab it into your leg an enemy shoots at you, breaking the animation but you still get the effect.

I'm confused, feels weird? Compared to the annoyance of still going through the animation while getting fired at or knocked in the face? Would any of us here continue to stab ourselves in the leg with said drug if you knew that the guy an arms length away was about to punch you in the face, or would you try to defend yourself? Still benefiting from the effect of the drug is just how the game mechanic would work no big deal.

Would they really take that long?

I don't think drug animations are necessery, but I would see it as fine addition that (imo) would add to the experience. And it could even be used as a gameplaymechanic (animation speed based on relevant skill/stat - could be really effective, especially with stims).

I see that he also skipped over half of my comment. Would it be that difficult to make it an OPTION as I said BEFORE Mr. Fish?

Absolutely.
Lots of ideas, lots of people suggesting optional stuff, including me.
Making the game play the way you want it to play requires PC and GECK.
If all our optional stuff were included then it'd take 10 minutes of pop-ups before even starting the intro after clicking "New Game".

I think it would be a cool OPTION so that it would satisfy both parties :) and maybe even make the option exclusive to hardcoe mode.

It's kinda 50:50 for me lol

Some amount of customizability is always good, but if everythig is optional it will no doubt hurt the overall experience in some ways.

I'd like to see an animation. If my character does something, I'd like to see some animation for it whether it is eating, drinking, or slamming dope.

Not being able to spam stims or any other drug adds to tactical game play. You decide before battle what buffs you want, otherwise in battle you better be sure to have enough time to complete the taking drug animation.

But really i don't mind either way. Not really a big deal.

hardcoe is going to be difficult enough with stimpaks taking time to heal. I'll probably be thanking my lucky stars that developers let me slam buffout mid fight.

I agree with many previous post regarding the mature rating, drug use, and violence.

Ridiculous that you can dismember, cannibalize, and enslave, but drugs and six are still taboo? One would think that with a mature rating those thing would be allowed in the game.

Kids shouldn't be able to buy this game anyway, so why shouldn't it be chock full of advlt content? If you don't want to pay attention to what games your kid is playing or the tv programs they're watching, maybe you shouldn't have had a kid.

Hell, at least in this game there is addiction as a consequence to drug use.

Then again if I was under 18 and couldn't buy this game I'd be bummed.

I could only imagine.

Me: "Hey mom can I get fallout:NV?"

Mom: "No honey that game is too advlt for you, how about this nice Banjo Kazooie game? :nope:

(No offense to any banjo kazooie fans. )
