I went and bought new vegas yesterday and it just says i need a internet connection not that i need broadband.. i cannot get steam to work to install the damn game. Is there a workaround or do i have to try to get my money back?

That's....not very descriptive of the problem. Are you getting a certain error with Steam or what? You need to provide more info to get help, generally. Now, Steam may load rather slowly with a dial-up connection, but other than that there shouldn't be any serious issues.

well here are the problems so far.... updating steam took about 6hrs.. download wasnt that big but it kept restarting... then i couldnt connect to steam. most of the time it would just stop and i would have to retype my password and try again.. then by some [censored]in miracle it got connected and started installing.. the installing froze and i had to restart it .. 2nd try it installed!.... then more problems... steam keeps on freezing... the download of the patch will start sometimes then steam will freeze other times the download wont even start..hell if there was a way i could get by without having to connect to [censored]in steam or not patch the damn game and play it would make me happy.

Steam needs to log you in, then verify the game key (inside the packaging)

After that you can install with the dvd included in the box.

"Dialup" will only make it take slightly longer to login and verify the key. After that it should be fine. You can also maybe take it to a buddies house who has broad and and do it there.


You should aslo consider ditching dialup. Between satalittle internet, and the 3G cell networks providing internet connections there is not really wanywhere in the US where you cannot find some type of high speed internet.

you need to install steam before even getting to install the game & when I recently installed Steam it took about 5 hours & many restarts (steam can be very flaky on dialup)

I did install with the dvd and thats the bs i have went through so far. I have tryed dc from internet and playing off the dvd t but it trys to start steam up and patches if i hit play on steam it usually causes it to freeze... fyi there are alot of people without sometype of highspeed.. sure i could get satelite but that would not be much of an upgrade from dialup for online gaming so why spend the money

Sadly, it's easy to forget that broadband isn't available everywhere yet especially in certain pockets of the world. The only solution would be to somehow find a computer you can use steam on that has a broadband connection and download the files to a dvd, flash drive, laptop, etc. then copy them to your steamapps folder. Kinda sad you can't just play the game unpatched from the retail disc, that's definitely a mistake for any retail games that utilize steam
