Player's voice?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:22 am

i just find it kinda weird how some of you guys are praising a game for something that it doesn't do.

oh you have a stutter? funny no one mentions anything about it ever, i suppose the wasteland did quite the positive number on politeness.

oh you're a mad scientist? excuse me but how many lab experiments have you done in the past week, and what made them mad?

oh you're an alien in a human's body? that's funny, pretty sure we all saw you come from the womb.

and these multitudes of personalities you're speaking of aren't really present in the dialogue options are they? and how is that fact that you're mute in fallout not break roleplay options. what words are you slurring if you aren't even speaking any?

sorry for the crap attitude, but a lot of you are saying the same contradictory thing and aren't even aware of it, it's slightly annoying.

No more or less annoying than having anyone, in regard to any subject, take the stance "I'm right about how this matter of personal preference should be, and all the rest of you are wrong."

Sorry for the crap attitude, but having played games without voiced PCs, and having played games with voiced PCs, I like my game-burger "hold the player character voice." I make no claims toward more/less immersive, nor toward right way/wrong way- I realize that personal preferences differ, and mine are "My imagination works, I can voice it myself, and I like it that way."

yeah but you didnt' even address the point i was making in all that. i honestly admit i'm off topic right now, i'm talking about people on this thread acting like their lack of options means more options. the definition of player customization is what i'm talking about, which is dumb for me to argue hear, thats my bad, but please hold the forum smack down back until you're actually having the same conversation with me.

I dont know how difficult it would be....BUT,what about you talking in a microphone or headset etc,to respond in conversation.
That way your using your own voice, some may find it cheesy, some may like it....i think there was a tom clancey game were you could use your voice to command etc.
I know the game is'nt compatable with kinect, but maybe for future games it could at least allow you to use your voice.
Anyway...just a thought,good or bad?.....you decide :)

Edit: you could activate your pitboy or change weapons using voice recognition too ( like i said just a thought ).
If you disagree with that idea thats fine, but dont shoot me down for it :)

to be honest I dont want a prerecoded player voice, mostly because it often feals more like a (bad) time sink on the developers part.

ok...but you can't just say voice kills the rpg aspect in one game and then not with another game without providing details. the WHY is what i'm looking for.

If a game forces the player into a character role, IE Mass Effect, I have a hard time classifying it as a role-playing game in terms of what I like to see. I like games where I can play any sort of character as I see fit. My characters look differently, act differently, view the world differently. A good role play game builds the world, and then I move through it. With only one (or two, M/F) character options, I lose my ability to free form role play. I might role play a small well bred woman with a lilting voice, or a huge woman with a deep voice, or an evil woman who speaks in only whispers. I might make a rowdy man who is always loud, or a scholar who speaks in measured, clipped tones. Any voice acting gets in my way of living my character concept. The game has to define some things, thus limiting role play choices, but the more it defines, the less chance for freeform role play.

I'm not here to argue that this is what role play should be or that everyone has to see it this way. I'm only speaking for myself here.

Actually, the nerevarine didn't have a voice. All you heard was the thwack of the weapon as it hit him, he never made any noise himself.

Oh in Morrowind your character has the same screams as NPCs. :P
I do remember my Wood Elf male screaming like a woman as he was hit. It didn't happen often, but it happened.

No voice for an open ended, world rpg thanks. They work great in Mass Effect, I really love both male and female voices, but not in a game that is so open ended where you can be anyone you want.

i for one am absolutely horribly tired of mute main characters.

shepards voice is spotty at times but lord is it a welcome change

Oh yeah? Well I'm absolutely horribly tired of voice acting! Go back to the days of pure text dialogue, that's what I say!

I am mixed here on this, as an avid DAO player with no voiced PC i had no problem with that. I also played ME and ME2 and found femShep's to be ok, (note that i MOSTLY play female characters) and when i played a maleShep i really more or less just rushed through the game to get the romance answers i was also looking for. Now if they did something like Saints Row 2 where i could pick from a few different styles of voices i do not think that would be too awfull, it might just add a bit to the game if you have a few different voices to choose from for each character. DA2 has me a bit conflicted, Bioware is trying to breathe a bit of life into the PC voice by adding icons to convey feeling with each response how it will work is anybodie's guess but i am looking foward to checking out what Bioware has implemented, will it fail or rule it is too early to say. I think the best option for something as controversial as this might be for Bethesda to do voice overs for the PC but allow the player the option to go mute if they choose. I know it seems alot of work for something that might fail, but untill someone goes out on a limb and trys it gaming will not evolve and that is worse than a failed voice over attempt.

Like I said, it requires some imagination. A lot of RPG fans really like that. You may not like roleplaying in that way, but a voice would ruin it for the people who do enjoy it, and I am fairly certain that most of the fanbase likes playing different characters like that. Besides, a player voice would just be extra work and is just unnecessary in general. They shouldn't fix a system that isn't broken and has worked since the beginning.

I don't think that if your character had a voice it would be awkward if it went off basics like in the Sims video games I mean it's not really free-from dialog in the game because everything your character says or can say is scripted already.

It would be pretty neat to have an option to have a voice or not, tedious but neat nevertheless

i dont like the idea of the player having a voice but he should be called by his or her name .... it would have rocked if three dog would have called me by Cinderella rather than the kid from vault 101

That would require getting some really good text-to-speech tech developed. You know how long people have been working on that? And the stuff we have now STILL sounds pretty stiff, compared to a normal person. THAT is why games always try to use some kind of workaround for the name. FO3 called the character the Lone Wanderer, Mass Effect always called your character by his/her last name, Shepard, it's all just a way of avoiding the one thing they can't voice.

Not a good idea, my name is Tayci and there is no way they could put a name database in the game and have that name in there (although it is a real name, Lucille Ball, Long, Long Trailer) I have come to terms that my name will never be mentioned or put on a cup or anything, something you got to deal with.

I do not want a voice because half the time I skip through the characters talking anyways because I read faster than they talk.

They can still name you through text, remember the contracts on the talon mercs/regulators. Not to hard to do I bet. But yeah voicing out thousands of names.....yeah.
