Transport fails

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 11:08 pm

So I'm playing with the GECK for Fallout 3 and I realize "Omigosh, people can't get off the highways in the future!" Indeed, except for points where the highway turns into a town and back again, there is no visible on-ramps or off-ramps (well, there's one, but its only on the right side). Since Suburbia seemed to have suddenly come back in style in the 2070's, I was confused. The only thing close to a highway junction was an interchange which only worked in one direction (T-intersections require ramps, bridges and overpasses). Even a cloverleaf, the coolest thing for highways evah was missing.

Then I started noticing other problems with the pre-war transport systems:

Roads: These things are REALLY tiny. If two trucks come towards each other, they will collide even if in different lanes.

Subways: I know the distances were shortened in-game to make walking easier (to the tune of 20 meters at one point), but the train-cars couplers don't even work with each other. A moot point since most are crashed, but I was dissapointed when I tried to make a passenger train to a new locale.

Monorails: I guess I could cobble a station out of mezzanine pieces from the metro, but the pieces of rail don't interlock with each other. A system should be made out of long, regular pieces, and in a nuclear blast, some should fall, definitely, but the short distances between debris makes the whole system look shoved in like a handful of model trees.

Anyway, I hope New Vegas fixes these issues, especially the roads one. I'm nervous cause they said they'd use the original roads pieces.

I am going to have to agree with Ralos, i did sometimes find the roads inconvenient but i would much rather have the realism of them. They were excellent set pieces to the post apocalypse.

Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes made of ticky tacky,
Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes all the same.
There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one,
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same

The Raised Highways were there for something to explore, not for transportation access. I expected to come to dead ends and impassable places in the game. If you notice, there are whole stretches of raised highway that you can't even get on in the game. As to why there are no off ramps, well, they fell off because the Vault Tec Glue company, a Subsidiary of Horses R Us, made some crappy glue.

As far as making a train, if you are trying to build one in the GECK, use the BOS DLC. You can use that train as it is complete.

The on road highways were two lane suburban lanes not meant for truck traffic.

There, I have taken care of your issues with realism and roads with a some Suspension of Disbelief points. :D

I'm surpised noones said a simple "Game Logic" - What you see in game isn't all there is (Otherwise we have an even bigger issue - Several populated levels of Vault 13 have absolutely no connection to the rest of the vault - How did those people get in there?)

Alright...yeah I nit-picked, but I wasn't angry at an unrealistic game; I was just upset I couldn't build anything that didn't already exist. I know the game messes with distance, eliminates boring parts, etc.
but whats the point of a level-editor if you can't...it's like painting with the same shades and tints: It should fit with the others, but not be some twisted doppelganger of them.

Besides, I think you can measure the skill of a developer by how much attention they put into the little things...the more unhinged it is from its plot and its own "real world", the worse the game becomes.

Also, awesome poetry from Conqueror.

And sorry for resurecting my own thread.

There should be no transport in a fallout game, it would ruin it!
