Most consoles are sold at a loss
Consoles do not have high end graphics cards in them themselves, they are fairly old by this point

Don't look at high end chipsets if you are looking for a budget build.

I probably havent been looking at high end chipsets, what I am looking at now is intell gma hd 3000 which I hoping can at least play minecraft.

when I started this thread I was a bit more confident about this laptop but I am slightly hesitant now...

If you're not sure don't waste your money. It's not like there aren't going to be more deals on laptops.

I'd suggest going to the tech thread saying how much money you have and what you want to do with the laptop and see what they say.

1.Problems you listened to the minecraft forums . They are very young and don't know what they are saying half the time.
2. Even though not a great tech and computers I don't think you should buy a laptop hoping to play TESV with that. Save your money more to get a better laptop or whatever you may want to get.

well I did not ask the MC forums if it would run Skyrim, I asked them if it would run minecraft. EDIT: ( I am looking for solid reasons not to buy this, so far I have gotten not many and I am only hessitant right now but I may go ahead and buy it any ways) like Ive said, my intention for buying this laptop is not for skyrim. if at maximum I could only run minecraft I would be more than happy.

Minecraft is a fairly CPU-dependent game, though GPU also affects performance. In general, integrated graphics (anything labeled as "intel") are not suitable for gaming at all. This laptop has a mediocre CPU, and a terrible GPU, and it's made by the worst laptop manufacturer.

As far as why consoles can run games even though they're cheap, it's because they run them at medium settings at very low resolutions, and upscale them. Also, you could build a gaming computer for close to the price of a console that would perform fairly well.

my grandparents desktop can run MC fairly well and its at least 5 years old. I am not sure what graphics card it is using but its not the latest, I think its a intel chipset but all I know for sure is that it has a sticker that says pentium 4. so I can't see why this more modern laptop would not be able to run MC.

Er, desktop with Intel GMA? Sure, if it were in a laptop, but either way, a 2.1GHz CPU and Intel GMA graphics card plus Windows 7.. if you have fun with Skyrim chugging like an SOB if even playing at all, plus crackling sound, go for it. Otherwise, no, if you're building a computer, get a discrete graphics and sound card just to start, and a better CPU, if you want to play Skyrim on somewhat a comfortable level (mid-low to mid settings).

If you want a laptop for work related things then this laptop is fine. Any sort of gaming is not going to happen. Minecraft should play fine on it though.

any one agree or disagree with this, specificly the last part. I started this thread looking for reasons not to buy because I already got assurances that I would be able to run MC.

Well if minecraft is your main worry go buy it , but for Skyrim I think your at lost. Personally I think you will regret this. I rather get a desktop but hey don't listen to us.

Indeed if he's only worried about minecraft, no biggie, but your computer is only as fast as your slowest component, which means don't even think about Skyrim.

well I probably will. I will still think about it before I actually make the order. my final contribution and this thread can wither is that that desktop monitors sold online are out of my price range in addition witht the price of the desktop (and neither of which ever seem to include the cords so thats another expense)

You could always try and find a monitor on Ebay or Craigslist, which would save you quite a bit of money. However, it seems you are pretty set on buying the laptop. I haven't played the beta version of Minecraft (only the free one) but I'd assume that laptop would run it just fine. I'd still highly recommend you stray away from a laptop unless you really need the portability.

- I can't ever recommend an HP laptop to someone in good conscience. I've yet to hear of one that didn't kill itself with massive heat problems in a few years time.

- I've seen many cheaper i3s (though, admittedly, not Sandy Bridges)

since i have been scraping the internet for specs I have begun to wonder why consoles can run high end graphic games but while the chipsets for pc's cost half the price for a console, its a bit wierd to me.

- Extreme optimization allows for games to run on weaker hardware
- Mass production and buying from the lowest bidder allows for lowering costs
- Cutting corners allows for further cutting costs

maybe play skryim when it comes out

-snip-

I would not plan to play skyrim on this laptop; however, the price is not bad for a non-gaming laptop. The integrated Intel HD 3000 is a POS for gaming.

For a total price of around 500-700, you can probably build a desktop that will be able to handle skyrim very well at 1920x1080 resolution.

If you can afford it, you might want to consider spending 500-700 to build a desktop and buy a separate $300-400 netbook for non-gaming purposes.

If you absolutely must game on a laptop (apart from Minecraft), I suggest to find one with minimum 1GB NVIDIA 460M or 1GB AMD 5830M. Either of those laptop cards can deliver decent frame rates for gaming at 1600x900 or 1920x1080

if you need a gaming laptop, try looking at some of the Sagers on http://www.xoticpc.com

I think even this would have been a more balanced deal (though I'm not much of an Acer notebook fan):
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?afsrc=http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1187285-unless-any-one-objects-i-am-going-to-do-this/1&EdpNo=7301627&CatId=4938&SRCCODE=LINKSHARE&cm_mmc_o=-ddCjC1bELltzywCjC-d2CjCdwwp&AffiliateID=lw9MynSeamY-ecVbOWBJnXxeFc.dw5tQ.Q

The CPU isn't as fast, but the graphic chipset is far superior. It could probably even run Skyrim, but it probably would crawl through it. You just simply have to spend more money to get something that would run Skyrim. $100 more would get you something like this:

This notebook was actually $50 less about a week ago.
