That was a demo of the game, not the gold game. Therefore there was still work to be done. They could have added more since they don't wanna be to revealing of there game before its out. Its a Fallout game so I'm sure if theres not alot of people anyway then theres a god, good reason for it.

If the amount of people is anything near the amount found in Megaton, im satisfied...

I much rather have a few NPC's that you can have conversations with, than tons of NPC's that are there just to fill the town up.

Then again, this is Vegas, and i expect a few more in the finished version of the game.

I'd say that I would very much prefer to have a bunch of conversation-friendly NPC's, but also a number of "filler" NPC's as well. In reality, I really don't walk around, talking to everyone I see anyway, so why would I do that in a game? Especially in the Fallout world, people would probably be far less likely to engage in conversation with strangers.

And I think Oblivion is a fine example as to why there's no need to talk to every NPC you see, as they all - when it comes down to it - are nothing but filler NPC's that you can talk to for no reason, just to hear the same lame "rumours" over and over again. I'd rather skip the whole conversation screen, just like in FO3, and have them say just one line. Kinda like "Looking for supplies? Check out Craterside Supply". That's more informative than what most people in Oblivion had to say, and yet you didn't need to enter that unnatural, time-warping conversation screen.

And a city simply doesn't feel like a city if there are but 6 people in the streets.

Maybe there is another explenation people. Has anyone noticed that every time we got a view of the Strip it was night (probably to show off all the nice shiny neon lights). Who knows, maybe most people were sleeping despite Vegas being the city where nobody ever sleeps.

People saying "blame the engine" IIRC in one interview some Obsidian dev said they modified the engine to handle more people because of how populated they were making the gameworld. The Strip is empty because you have to pay to get in and it was just recently started back up.

Exactly. In a world where 50 caps (or whatever other currency equivalence) is supposed to be 'alot' 2000 caps is probably the equivalent of trying to by a Tenpenny Tower Penthouse. Besides, The Strip is a privalege, not a right. So I can imagine alot of New Vegas residents, albeit jealous, have more urgent things to use their caps on besides trying to taste the Pre-War life for one night.

Erm. If someone needs a certain passport or to have a lot of caps (2,000 minimum, I believe) just to enter the strip, then shouldn't The Strip be somewhat deserted?

I mean, I figure not many folks in this post-apocalyptic world have a lot of money or can obtain a passport because either they aren't special enough or they've got a bad reputation for stealing, murdering, etc. which you wouldn't want in a fancy place with fancy, high roller consumers. Would you?

So.. the somewhat deserted feel makes sense to me.

the intro video (before you get shot) shows loads of people (and robots) milling around the strip. So maybe it was just because they were showing alpha demo.

Its not the engines fault.

But if it is....

Thats disapointing, and a major flaw.

What I was thinking their lore reason behind it would be, but its mostly the engine.

And what Silver Eagle and medvial lady said that was an old video from way back so they probably have some filler NPCs by now.

:(
In that time (10 or so years) we might actually get word that Bethesda have started to actually make progress on the fifth Elder Scrolls! Might.
Thanks for the sympathy. :D

Heh. Well, at least the technology should be better by then! I still remember back in the late 80′s when I used to play on my father's laptop - and everything was black and yellow/white. If one can look back as far as that, one realizes just how much things have improved up until today :D .

Well hopefully with Fallout 4 or The Elder Scrolls V they might have updated the engine to support more NPC's.
But yeah it's sad that The Strip will be so deserted.

Apparantly the words 'Demo' and 'The Strip is divided into 4 cells' mean absolutely nothing.

If only everyone could understand this

But I agree with the Colonel. Also, obviously Vegas is not an easy place to get into so I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't that many people. IMO In the demo it seemed like the right amount of people to me. I wouldn't want to have to wait in line for a blackjack table or a Gomorrah girl :swear:

While there are times when i really like having interesting and dynamic NPCs wandering about (mass effect citadel in the clubs and bars for example), i really find that i like the the few NPCs in Fallout 3 because every one was interesting and in depth it also contributed to the desolate atmosphere.

Why arnt there alotta people on the strip?

In every video ive seen so far theres hardly nobody on the strip; other then some NCR troopers/robcops and strippers dancing in a foutain.

I thought the strip was supposed to be the main attraction of new vegas? if so.. where the hell is everybody!?

I just ripped this out of a http://www.gamersguidetolife.com/2010/10/exclusive-fallout-new-vegas-community.html someone posted in another topic:
"In Fallout 3, the most populated place was the slightly barren Rivet City, with only a small handful of NPCs. Will there be much larger settlements in New Vegas, with many more interactive NPCs?

Since the Strip (and a lot of the surrounding region) didn't get hit by nukes, you'll find more intact settlements, and more people overall. In fact, the first town you wake up in (Goodsprings) has a decent number of folk, and you'll find more populated areas as you explore the wasteland. Overall, we've got a ton of NPCs."

The huge difference in Mass Effect was that NOBODY moved around, and aside from the merchants and some quest NPCs, you couldn't interact with them. I think I actually prefer Mass Effect's ambient NPCs, though. Sure, in FO3 they wandered around and had schedules, but they had nothing to say and were basically there to fill space. Of course, FO3 had the fun of opening fire on a crowd, too. :)

There's a limit for how many NPCs the computer can take appearing... Not to mentiont he work it'd take to palce tons and tons of unique NPCs on the street everywhere.

That said, this IS a post-apocalyptic world - people are few in numbers no matter where you go...

what are you talking about, morrowind had hundreds and hundreds of people without crashing the engine, and it worked just fine on the original xbox. besides, for me, they don't have to do or say much, I want plenty of npcs that I can interact with but they certianly could add npcs that just have a single line, who wake up; gamble; whatever and the go home just about every day. that would make things look habitated.
