A friendly warning to Bethesda Softworks

Yeah! Fallout New Vegas for the PC, can’t wait to get home and play it. I load the game, Steam does its updates, set it to Normal Difficulty with the realism option and start playing. Love the beginning, and the kindly doc that nursed me back to health. Complete the tutorial step out of the saloon, save and go eat dinner.
Can’t wait to get home and play the game. Load it up, and there is this giant Czacadia or whatever bug flying around killing every big horner and townsperson in Goodsprings. I empty 3 9mm clips into this thing and find it is armored like an M1A2 Abrams. It destroys the town robot, looks around for another target and charges me at the speed of 100 mph. Easy Pete unloads his 357 magnum into it with no effect and it kills him on the spot. I duck into the Saloon, the thing follows me in, killing all the occupants as I run out the back door. In ten steps I am out of stim packs, ammo and the monster kills me in two hits. I reload several times with the same effect. WTF is this???

Okay, start again, new character, normal difficulty, realism on. Did the tutorial, all is well. Noticed I am a bit tired. Go to the robot’s shack, drink some water, eat a Gecko steak and take a two hour nap. I wake up dead of dehydration. By now, I am starting to suspect that this game really svcks sewer water.

Start again, new character, this time I’m smart I save at the doc’s office and turn realism off. Do the tutorial and all is well. Sunny Smiles says she hunts Gecko’s and Coyotes. Sound good to me. South of the camp fire, I run into some Gecko’s, three to be exact. Gun them down reload, and the damned things get back up and come after me. I gun them down again, this time I notice the note in the upper left corner saying they are unconscious. Great these things have been set to essential. This cycle goes on twice more and I’m out of ammo. Run back to town with them hot on my heals. I go into the general store to buy more ammo and the idiot just stands there in shock and won’t even speak to me. The Gecko’s proceed to die from town folk gunfire, get up multiple times and wipe out the entire town. Now I am pissed. Call my buddy who says he had a death claw spawn in the town and wipe it out. Now I know this is some sort of sick joke by the devs. What’s worse I live in a state that has a law that says I can’t bring this stupid stinking excuse for a game back for a refund. Yea, I know I can mod it and fix it myself. But my gosh, why in the world do I have to do that with a so called “finished product?”

Okay Bethesda. I hope to heaven you are reading this, because your future as a game maker depends on what I am about to say. Don’t you ever outsource your game development to another studio like you did this time. Keep it in house. Your past work has been incredible. From Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, you did a wonderful job. But this is the sorriest excuse for a game I have ever played. What is worse, others are experiencing the same things. For the record, I will never buy another Bethesday game that was developed in a studio outside of their MD headquarters. Maybe I can find a svcker on ebay to sell this to....... used.

So really you are blaming Obsidian, the original creators of the fallout franchise?

Just so you know, a second patch was released this very day to fix the unkillables, it's now back to normal.
I agree a better job could have been done with this game, but I think Bethesda pushed the Obsidian team on this one to get the game to market, we can all have great games time permitted, but time is the issue here.

This just in, nobody cares. And you can't sell it on ebay because you can't sell steam games. I'm sure they'll fix it TODAY since it's obviously a huge problem that was overlooked.

You shouldn't start topics that begin with "a friendly warning" since anons are not scary in real life

"Whining", Really? I think complaining about the fact that Bethesda and Obsidian released what is obviously an extremely flawed and completely unplaytested game is totally legitimate and one of the reasons why this forum exists. The fact that the developers think they can release an unfinished game and the finish it through updates and patches is completely ridiculous. I'm willing to bet that when your game starts crashing everytime you try to enter the vegas strip, or your save file gets corrupted and you lose hours of play, you'll be on this forum "whining" as well.

Venting about an issue that's already been patched (unkillable enemies) instead of taking a second to read the forum to realize it's been fixed is pretty much whining in my book.

Technical issues aside, Obsidian is what made this game great. It's better than Fallout 3 on every level: better and more varied voice acting, non-linearity, immersion, multiple factions and involvement with those factions, etc. hardcoe mode was genius, and it--combined with weapon mods--basically represents taking what was best about Fallout 3 mods and officially putting them in the code. That's fantastic.

Frankly, this is the best Besthesda labeled game since Morrowind and it's the one that has the most potential. Oblivion... let's not go there. Fallout 3 improved on it with expansiveness and better face design, and NV improved on its predecessor too. I used to be upset that they were working on Fallout games instead of Elder Scrolls V--but now I'm glad. This is a good learning experience they can apply to Elder Scrolls V, when they get to it. If we get the depth and background of an Elder Scrolls game with the gameplay quality of NV... well, Morrowind might finally get dethroned.

Why is it always the publisher's fault and not Obsidian's even though Obsidian blew through 5 different publishers and had major technical issues every time with every single one of their releases?

It's weird how that works. It's either the publisher rushing Obsidian or Obsidian games are only played by droolcupping end-users because Obsidian releases perfect games apparently.

Quality assurance is an alien concept to both Obsidian and Bethesda, putting the two together was never going to go well.

Are you and I playing the same game here?

The voice acting in New Vegas is the same humdrum awfulness that was prevalent in Fallout 3. It's like they hired from the same agency again.

Immersion? What? You mean like when the NCR Sharecroppers told me that this was the "pride of the state" and they needed to keep it "well guarded" so that random wastelanders wouldn't just walk through and gorge themselves and then there were no guards or NPCs at the NCR Sharecropper farms?

http://imgur.com/WNZjf.jpg

WOW look at how well guarded it is. Pride of the state, baby. A well guarded (by the one farmer) single corn field. That's immersion.

Or the bustling casinos of the New Vegas strip that had like 5 roulette tables and no people? I guess they did barren wasteland pretty good. They put you in a wasteland with stretches of nothing. Or how about talking to the people in the Atomic Wrangler in Freeside? They tell me all about the rules and etiquette about dealing with their prosttutes and after about 5 run arounds through the entire casino, I didn't see a single prosttute. That's immersion.

And hardcoe mode? That was clever for you? You mean this whole barren wasteland that was so immersive that hardcoe mode would make it feel like a true survival game but instead you could go a week without eating or drinking and every run down shack in this place has working plumbing, a working and well stocked fridge, and stockpiled cupboards? Immersion, woo!

Weapon mods are a feature for you? This is supposed to be something special? You mean like attaching silencers to guns? A feature that we had in free games like Counter-Strike back in 1999? HOLY MOLY I can put a scope on a rifle! A SCOPED RIFLE! No way!

Involvement with factions? You mean like how siding with the NCR makes it so you can't get the good ending for the Followers of the Apocalypse because the script function variable never actually reaches the value it needs? Awesome. Getting involved with this highly secretive and violently xenophobic Brotherhood of Steel cult happened because I stumbled across a broken robot? Sweet. And talk about getting involved, Caesar's Legion guys never did tell us about why half of them said Caesar's like "See-zer" and the other half said it like "Kai-zer". That's immersion, voice acting, and getting involved with factions rolled up into one!

The bar is set really low if these things impressed you.

I find it odd that in your original post you praise Bethesda for Fallout 3, then go on a rant regarding Fallout New Vegas and later on make the comparison of 'The voice acting in New Vegas is the same humdrum awfulness that was prevalent in Fallout 3'

Combined with some pointless remarks at a select series of instances completely unrelated to the issues why you made this thread (A Cazador killing everything, death by dehydration and the temporary issue of essential creatures) leads me to believe that you're just venting off steam like a missile without a guidance system installed. ;)

So I believe it is best to just close this topic as it's getting rather pointless. The original post was a fun read though (had the Cazador wreaking havoc on Nomal mode too), but your followup is reminding me about http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wnkhb42tRsc (warning: strong language)

If you have specific hardware and/or software issues, please feel free to list them in the appropriate threads. But random discussions on what is/is not immersion and making personal stabs at other forum users have no place here.

I trust we understand one another :)

Return to Fallout: New Vegas
