Yet another crash thread : Fallout: New Vegas

Re-installed FNV twice so far to try and minimise CTD (crashed 90 seconds after the second installation), crashes while loading, crashes while saving, crashes just after fast travel (happening a lot lately) crashing running through the wilderness - just like Oblivion and FO3 do, crashes upon startup, crashes on exit...the list goes on. "Fallout NV has stopped working". Those words are becoming as familiar to me as my own name...

It wasn't always like this, ran OK-ish to start with, but has been getting worse and worse. I have some good days - yesterday for instance - only crashed twice in about 10 hours. Today? 11 times and counting...

Re-installed FNV twice so far to try and minimise CTD (crashed 90 seconds after the second installation), crashes while loading, crashes while saving, crashes just after fast travel (happening a lot lately) crashing running through the wilderness - just like Oblivion and FO3 do, crashes upon startup, crashes on exit...the list goes on. "Fallout NV has stopped working". Those words are becoming as familiar to me as my own name...

It wasn't always like this, ran OK-ish to start with, but has been getting worse and worse. I have some good days - yesterday for instance - only crashed twice in about 10 hours. Today? 11 times and counting...

If anybody spots something that should be changed or removed, please give details on how to.

Well, I did :
a couple of clean boots - disabling all non-Microsoft services (except avast, which wouldn't disable for some reason)
cleaned my registry
dowloaded and installed the lastest directx
configured FNV to run via compatibility mode for XP SP2
configured FNV to run as an administrator
lowered the game's view distance
did the quad core tweak in both FalloutPrefs.ini and Fallout_default.ini

and still it crashes. :brokencomputer:

Not as often (so far) but I'm still quicksaving every 60 seconds in anticipation of the inevitable CTD.
Playing a game with the Sword of Damocles permanently over one's head isn't conducive to overall enjoyment of the Product.

(and when TESV eventually lumbers over the horizon...we'll go through it all again...) :bonk:

What kind of crash are you getting? Is it the 0xc0000005 exception or something different (you can check the event viewer)?
Do you use mods of any kind?

If you are getting that exception:
You can download a program called debugdiag (from microsoft) and catch the crash. The program will create a memory dump and you can
anolyze this for issues.

Download debugdiag.msi (not the x64 version). You may have to go to the install directory to execute the right program. The anolyze only
shortcut is installed in the program directory but not the debugdiag.exe. C:\Program Files (x86)\DebugDiag <-- It should be debugdiag.exe

Its not too hard to get a crash dump from here. Install the program "as admin" by right clicking. Then run it again "as admin".
If the wizard (select rule type) pops up, you want to run fallout 3 nv before proceeding. Afterwards, select crash->a specific process-

>FalloutNV.exe.

--(only do this if your getting the c0000005 exception when you crash) you probably are
On the next wizard screen you want to select exceptions at the bottom. On the first chance exception screen select add exception.
Find c0000005 (access violation) and select mini-userdump from the action type drop-down menu.

Click OK and finish out the wizard.
You should see your rule listed in the rules tab. The status should e active and the userdump count 0. Simply go into the game and get it
to crash. After the crash the userdump count should be set to 1. A minidump file is created jsut follow the path listed under user dump.
The mini-dump should be a small file (~200 KB more or less). You can anolyze the dump by going to the advanced anolysis tab and addingthe dump data
file. Then click start anolysis.

I've installed the debugger, ran the game and it crashed again. However, this time I didn't get the "FalloutNV has stopped working" error message. It had just frozen rather than CTD. The diagnostic tool lists 2 userdump counts - one of 115KB:

Most of that is hieroglyphics to me :whistling: but hopefully a culprit can be ascertained from all of that.

Yeah, you're right. After a bit of digging - I found this in Event Viewer:

You said your getting the crashes in other games? Do you have games that are stable?
Are you using the d3d fix from nexus? Are you using mods for the game?

One thing you might try is adding fallout 3 nv to your avast anti-virus exceptions.
Also try to verify the local game cache from steam library (1 file might fail dont worry about it).
You can also try a clean install of your nvidia graphic drivers. There should be an option in the install wizard to clean install the drivers.
Make sure to run the driver installation program as admin.

Also, instead of a mini-dump can you try a full dump. Just edit the rule and click the drop-down and select full-dump. The file maybe
big (probably a gig or so). anolyse the full dump and see what that says. The mini-dump isnt telling me much other than the issue is with fallout 3 nv.

OK, I've added it to avast exclusions, so we'll see if that makes a difference.
The only games I've ever played on this machine are Morrowind, Oblivion, FO3 and FNV...(seeing a connection here? :shifty: ) and they've all been unstable to a degree.

TES4 would inevitably crash - running through the wilderness, sometimes during transitions, sometimes during loading.
FO3 much the same - more prevalent, though.

I don't mind if it crashes maybe once every couple of hours...but if I'm gonna be hitting F5 to Quicksave almost as much as I shoot things - it gets a bit tedious. :pinch:
There are certainly a number of hardware improvements I can make - I mean, this PC is more a Media Center than a high-end gaming machine, as I never envisaged actually playing games when I had it built. (Since I connected it to my 42" Bravia TV - my poor X360 has sat abandoned)

FNV generally runs OK, right up to the point where it doesn't. :shrug:

Try what i suggested and see. If you are experiencing stability issue with other games as well it may be an issue with stress on your system (possibly). How does your OS run and other applications?
You can download memtest86 and see if your memory has any hard or soft faults that need addressing.

OK, I've verified the local game cache, and re-installed my graphics drivers cleanly.
I don't have any mods or d3d fix (whatever that is), no third-party at all.

I edited the debug to full-dump, but neither file is anywhere near a Gig.

Oh, and I have had some problems with Vista this year. Once, it became corrupt and declared itself invalid. Refused to recognise the Product key and could not be authenticated. Microsoft eventually sent me a new Key, and I had to re-install Vista. Now, I have problems trying to install Windows updates i.e. it doesn't work any longer. (error 800704900). Tried all the fixes recommended by Microsoft without success, so I may have to re-install the OS yet again.

Also had a BSOD while playing FO3 about 6 months ago, which I think was related to my video card. I've updated the drivers several times since then (some worked better than others) and haven't had a repeat.

I don't have any mods or d3d fix (whatever that is), no third-party at all.

I edited the debug to full-dump, but neither file is anywhere near a Gig.

Oh, and I have had some problems with Vista this year. Once, it became corrupt and declared itself invalid. Refused to recognise the Product key and could not be authenticated. Microsoft eventually sent me a new Key, and I had to re-install Vista. Now, I have problems trying to install Windows updates i.e. it doesn't work any longer. (error 800704900). Tried all the fixes recommended by Microsoft without success, so I may have to re-install the OS yet again.

Also had a BSOD while playing FO3 about 6 months ago, which I think was related to my video card. I've updated the drivers several times since then (some worked better than others) and haven't had a repeat.

The dumps tell me what the last dumps told me, the issue seems to be with the game. Since you said fallout 3 nv isnt the only application with issues I would recommend running diagnostic tests. For memory you can run
a program called memtest86+. Theres two versions (memmtest86 and memtest86+). I use the plus version your welcome to try both. jsut download the bootable ISO and burn it. Then boot to the image and let the tests run.

You should also make sure your motherboard and soundcard drivers are updated. Check your MB manufactureres website.

Not trying to be sarcastic or anything, but my best guess would be that the root of your problem is that you're running Windows Vista. The only difference that I have consistently seen between my setup and what people reporting constant crashing use is the operating system. I'm running Windows XP with Service Pack 3. On bad days, New Vegas will crash three times in 12 hours. Usually, once a day at most.

It seems like both Vista and Windows 7 have compatibility issues with everything not made by Microsoft, and half the things that are.

0xC0000005 is pretty standard "invalid memory access". Vista wouldn't affect that. It's a plain and simple memory access issue in the code. I have caused a few hundred of those in my time (and that's not as an end user). There's really only four likely causes causes.

1. array bounds not checked.
2. failure to check for NULL pointer prior to dereferencing.
3. pointer type mismatch resolved incorrectly
4. code is insufficiently thread-safe.

How does this memtest work? I've downloaded the ISO for a bootable Windows CD, burned it OK and booted from the DVD Drive. All I get is a blinking cursor for 10 seconds...and then Windows starts up as normal...

No, I agree. I don't trust Vista at all, and the only thing that makes me hesitate upgrading to Windows 7 - is the apparent problems running games such as FO3 that IT has, as well.

I am on the brink here. I'm seriously astonished at the amount of hoop-jumping I've had to go through, just to play a bloody game.
Disabled Windows Aero, and closed all browser windows while playing (ran well for 3-4 hours, then crashed 6 times in 20 minutes today).
So...(and I very much appreciate the help here) if nothing else works and this fabled upcoming patch doesn't fix the issue PRONTO, then my AU$130 Fallout: New Vegas Collector's Edition (with Classic Pack), and my AU$50 Official Game Guide Book shall be retired to the shelf - there to gather dust for all eternity. And if these people get their act together and release another Elder Scrolls game before the end of the current geological era...then (as much as I'm looking forward to it) I would have very little practical option other than to ignore it for however long it takes for them to admit that IT is flawed as well, and rectify that one too.

FNV is a great game, but if it won't let me play it...what else can I do? :nope:

i play on 360, and was thinking of trying to play on my computer since i heard it is better all around, but my specs aren't as beefy as yours, and with all your problems, i better not even try..

The main point is that your error is pretty much "invalid memory access by application", not something you can control too easily.

The details amount to "Sure, just keep blaming Vista for an error I can create on anything since 95, at least." Trust me, I've done it on most of them with slipshod coding practices.
