No, the Lights don't have ARs for a reason. I play a light, and the ability to move and escape combat, and the ease of flanking more than make up for less powerful guns, and besides, a single Machine Pistol clip (Belgo or, in my case, the Hockler) will drop anyone if you've got a weapon buff, regardless of their health.
As a light, pick the weapon to suit your role. When I'm playing an Operative, I'll use the Drognav with the Coga scope. I lay turrets and mines, and sit in the back plucking away getting 2-shot kills. As an Operative, I stick with a submachine gun with the iron sights and duct-taped mags. Avoid combat when possible, engage when necessary and empty two clips. If that fails, run away. I can't offer a lot of insight to competitive games since I've only pubbed, but I imagine it won't be too different.
