GECK for consoles?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:10 pm

It may be to late in development, but what do you guys think about a GECK for console players? Nothing too big, but maybe like you can download meshes through a site like you could download maps for halo? Also it could be like the ingame spell and enchantment maker in Oblivion. Hell, Id be fine just to have access to console commands

Consoles have supported the map creator of halo... tho maybe the geck doesnt have to be on the xbox, like i said it be like the halo website where you download maps but instead you use the PC GECK and when your done you upload it to the Fallout site then download to the xbox. seem possible to me. and i have 90 gigs of unused space wanting to be filled with fallout stuff

Microsoft nor Sony allow mods on their consoles. It won't happen. Also, consoles have hardware limitations.

Again im saying it wont have to run on the xbox, itll just transfer through a web site, again like the halo site. Also it could be like a DLC we have to download to have access to it. halos map editor was basically modding, why was that allowed? As long as Microsoft and Sony are getting their moneys worth i dont think they would give a damn

It won't change the fact that it won't happen. Consoles are closed systems, and aren't mod-friendly. You get what you pay for.

PC users get the GECK because the developer has to do very little. They may modify the construction set a bit, but that's all, and then they can release it. It's essentially the same tool they used to develop the game.

Yeah, sadly I wouldn't really work. Even if they were allowed to release a GECK for the console.
It is not only the technical restriction of the console which does not provide enough power to run Mods really successfully.
It also breaks the EULA which clearly does not allow modifying any console content.
( This is the main reason why there wont be any official support for user created mods )

I'm all with you, I can"t see why the xbox can't just treat mods like a DLC ? :cryvaultboy:

How many threads do we have like this a day? The consoles cannot have mods because Sony/Microsoft won't allow them. And for the Dev team to release them in DLCs would require them to contact the person who originally made the mod, ask permission, edit the mod so that it would work on the consoles. (Which a lot of them wouldnt since the consoles GPU and CPU are getting a little out of date for a lot of resource intensive mods). Mods have a requirement for a faster CPU and more RAM.

Bethesda's modding EULA is specifically against selling mods, and Obsidian would have to acquire permission from every author and make sure nothing was reused from anybody else and also likely pay those authors in royalties and even if it were legally possible it wouldn't be worth it at all.

Hmm, sure that is possible. But there haven't been told any official word about it yet.
I think it might be rather complicated, since there are at least two companies involved. Maybe if Obsidian and Bethesda would find a agreement regarding that. But maybe Obsidian may have some other or better things to work on? Okay, as being a Fallout fan I think Obsidian really should be the most competent Developer to work on Fallout. But as said, no official word has been spoken. And there might be so much other things to do than making dlcs ...

The answer is that the console versions will not have mods. And if you mod the console, you are breaking the EULA, which gets you banned from Xbox LIVE, iirc.

It's not possible.

First, neither Microsoft or Sony would allow it which makes the whole situation pretty much moot.

Second, its extremely unlikely that either the XBox 360 or PS3 has the necessary RAM to run the GECK. Remember that console hardware is streamlined for gameplay and there are some types of software they just can't handle well. In particularly both consoles have limited RAM - it's generally not a problem for gaming but the GECK requires far more free memory.

Third, the GECK is a Windows application. Not a program that runs in Windows, but a program built around Windows architecture. Neither console supports this so the GECK can't really be ported, it would have to be built from the ground up.

This has come up many times before, both here and in the Fallout 3 forum (and for that matter the Oblivion and Morrowind forums). It's shown up half a dozen times in here recently and if you poke around you can probably find one of these threads, I know I've answered this question in more depth previously if you want more details.

Since the short answer to this is "it won't be happening" I'm going to go ahead and lock this.
