How many saves do you have?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 10:03 am

I keep around 12 hard saves that I write over sequentially oldest to newest. My first character was 78 hrs. Started a new character Saturday for more of a speed run to see different endings. I'm just writing over my old character because I'm never going back to it anyway.

First playthrough was about 60 hours. Kept ~15 hard saves, saved 243 times total.

Oh. You guys are talking about saves in general? I'll have to look that up. I meant 250 hard saves.

I have 152 hours logged and I have an Autosave, a Quicksave (which I use frequently) and two hard saves (one is a "just in case" save, the other is a "if I wanna go back" save).

Somebody is going to be in for a big surprsie.

Never ever rely on auto saves and quick saves. What if your 2 "hard saves" get corrupted?

Well for me I have about 10 saves.

Hey FTW, good to see you're still around...first post I've seen from you on this forum.

Oh, I've been around forever. I just don't post as much anymore.

Yeah, I did mean hard saves. As of now, I have 1215 hard saves. I never overwrite my saves. Never. I am paranoid when it comes to games with Bethesda's engine(learned my lesson when I lost my favorite character due to overwriting one save a lot in Oblivion; it got corrupted).

I'd guess 60-70+ hard saves at over 130 hours this game. I was hoping we'd have a thread about Saves as I'd like to hear other techniques for Skillful Saving. We've been having some posts where people have lost their game because they only had one Save or messed up their saves, etc. :(

Every so often, I'll use 7zip and archive off older saves in batches of 100 to clean up my save folder. And I'll copy special saves off into a sub-folder in case I ever want them down the road. Only takes about 5 minutes to archive off 100 save files on modern machines and it makes the save/load menu work faster as it's not trying to deal with 500+ saves.

But like you, I create a permanent save whenever I:

- Start sorting out inventory
- Finish sorting out inventory
- Before fast-traveling
- Multiple times during a particular dungeon crawl
- After important events
- Before what looks like important events
- After resting and refitting
- Every 15 minutes
- On a whim because the gecko ran across the road

FOMM used to have a save game manager, but it's not working yet in my copy of NVMM.

50 hours in, I am at 180 slots used. I have been making more slots lately as I am in the middle of the end game and I have about 25 quests going at once. Sometimes things don't work out the way that I want and I have to go back a few slots.

I currently have 3 saves one at the beginning of the game as I'm about to leave Goodsprings so I can skip the Intro. My other two are a melee build that I just started on and my main character save which I'm at LV 26 and pretty much beaten the game.

1 save at number 180 after 85 hours played. Going to have at least 1 other save to try out different paths from here on.

omg, I get so mad at myself if I don't save after doing a huge maintenance on my inventory and my companion's inventories and then lose it because of a freeze (which I KNOW can happen)!!!!

Before someone posts "a freeze shouldn't happen"....I know, I know but I've become pretty pragmatic and am enjoying my game while dealing with the reality. I'm hopeful for future games. :)

Wow! The OP sure does save a lot. I thought I was bad, but apparently I'm kinda in the middle.

I have 3 characters. I keep a different folder for each one (Matilda.Saves, Jebediah.Saves, Alice.Saves) and I keep those folders backed up on another computer. The one I'm actively playing is renamed simply to Saves so that FNV sees it.

Jebediah is level 20. He probably has 40 hours of play time and he has 228 saves.

Alice is level 22. She has about 40 hours of play also, and she has about 190 saves.

Matilda is level 14 and has about 25 hours of playtime and she has about 150 saves (been saving a lot on her).

I stick with 4 saves. 1 being auto and I alternate saving with the other 3 so I have a lot of back ups. Also have an extra saved on a separate device just in case the game decides to explode or something equally horrible happens.

I have 5 saves that I keep copying over, I save all the time. I learned the hard way in FO3 when auto save got corrupted and I lost 16hrs of work.

Same here. I hard save at least every 20minutes, and rotate through the save files, as well as quick saves before/after any action. Morrowind was my teacher on that one.

This thread is so sad. In that look what we have programed ourself to do these days . because of the condition games are being released in. Instead of voicing our displeasure of the state of the games (mostly imho so we dont start a flame war in a forum) We instead just continue to make these ungodly amount of saves to cover ourself. IMHO the more we keep doing this the worse games will be released in. And its not just beth games now a days more and more are releasing games in really bad shape. Very few even care what we think anymore it seems like. they no longer put pride in their work or the products they make, to even polish a game anymore BEFORE release. Its more a mindset of" just release the game and we will patch it when we get around to it" ( maybe) Once the issues/ problems are found. And I honestly sometimes think im paying devs to beta test their games for them i really do. Either that or all the Devs have almost blind people QA'ing/beta testing their games for them. And the more we let them keep doing this the worse it will get i think. We as gammers have so much buying power that we just dont utilize its just sad. Im working on a way to change all that for the greater good of all gammers.
Im at about 100 hrs with 250+ self saves as well as its set to auto saves on traveling and sleeping . I will save when.

1 after cleaning up inventory

2 before going thru a door or into a dungon

3 before a big battle

4 before talking to a named npc

5 if i notice anything change in performance wise all of a sudden like studdering for no reason

6 and sadly right after transitioning into a new area and seeing more then 10 npc's

7 right after i lvl up and pick a new perk

i usually have around 400 saves by the end of a game . And that is so pathetic that we have to do this many saves for a game, just to be safe. But we do it because we all have been screwed at one time or another from sloppy/old code.

^ ^ ^ ^ This.

A little under a hundred: 4 or 5 so I can go back and try alternate story threads toward the end of the main quest, all the rest to deal with crashing on the PC.
...or to compensate for glitches like Rex repeatedly turning insane and killing random unnamed NPC's while I'm trying to run an investigation. (Kept making me think of the Monty Python "New Brain" skit  )

I make several saves, most using the console:
savegame "WhateverIWantToNameIt"

This worked well for when I want to try a certain dialog or I'm concerned I've messed up a faction. I also use quicksave.

1x Auto
1x Quick
2x Saves

I tried playing 2 different characters side by side, one good/guns , one evil/melee , but it distracted me too much, so i deleted a few, did have 6 saves.
