Some thoughts on Fallout: New Vegas

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 9:44 am

I'll give you the map size and overall number of visit-worthy locations. However; I think Obsidian has improved on just about every other aspect. To many Obsidian actually took Fallout and made it more of an RPG. More of an actual Fallout game. However; it all does come down to opinion.

I personally hope Bethesda learns from Obsidian and does everything they did but use their own talent of telling stories with scenery.

I agree. NV is better in almost every way. An open world game, where you can go anywhere, does not mean you can go anywhere and be a god at all times like in FO3. There is actual difficulty in this game, and you can infact go anywhere even at early levels and survive. You have to use tactics and skill to do so. But I wandered just about everywhere at early levels. If I came across something I couldn't beat, I would find a way to go around it, or sneak past it with a stealth boy. But I COULD do it. It just took patience and a little bit of effort.

I actually suspect that FO4 will be a step backwards because Bethesda likes to make their games too easy. Now that I've had a taste of this world, the old FO3 style would be very difficult to swallow.

Was it 'cos the sound wasn't in 5.1 or I was viewing it on a turdy little 22inch widescreen instead of my 42inch HD?

Was it because you didn't use the features of your sound card? Mine does 7.1. Was it because you didn't hook your pc up to your 42inch HD? I can and do on occasion. As for mods, these are not simply 'grab a bunch drop them in and expect them to work with no work on your part'. They are certainly not 'rubbish' as you claim. Did you even try MMM, FCOM, or FWE? These do not merely add more guns. They add a ton of new and better content to the game although to make them work properly takes some work on your part.

I expect that it should because Obsidian went about blowing their own horn and every other statement from them was to this regard. If the developer says "It's going to have so much more content..." You're led to believe it's going to have more. You're running into people that heard that claim and are now crying foul.

There is - in fact - much more content in New Vegas than there was in Fallout 3. There may not be as much random pointless exploring opportunities, but there is definitely more content that has a point and that serves a purpose.

I would have it this way: They don't broadcast you missed a quest at all. Period. There's no reason to. If you don't meet someone in real life you don't get a text message saying "Potential Romance Failed". I'm just saying, if the quests aren't in the quest log, I shouldn't be aware of them on any level.

I can agree with that it would be better that way. Though I think the reason for the "quest failed" popups is similiar to the reason every [check] dialog options shows the failures. To show the player that there is (or was in this case) something to be had there - and that can lead to somewhat increased tension when deciding who you are about to murder. Anyway, I'm fine both ways.

There is - in fact - not more content in New Vegas. I have both strategy guides in front of me, and in a point for point count off of content, meandering or plot driven, ends up in Fallout 3's favor by about 10%. Random encounters count as content. Your argument that "random pointless exploring" isn't worthy of being counted is biased. What's important to you may not be important to others and vice versa. The fact that it's included deems it part of the content and qualifies it to be counted. Trekking across the D.C. Wasteland to find an obscure weapon or encounter is just as appealing to some as it is unappealing to you. So, please keep in mind that some people find that kind of content not only valid, but engaging and it adds depth to the world.

Another thing to consider: In FO:NV certain content is locked out if you do other content instead. This contributes to the "less than" feeling of the overall presentation.

How would you have it, then? Normally, when people die they can't interact with you anymore so... quest failed. Be careful who you kill.

Well how did I fail the quest if I never began it in the first place? It makes sense for active quests, but quests I had never even started yet should not be failed. Nothing at all should pop up.

I'm sorry, I didn'y realise I had to program my games to make them good.... and yes, I could hook my PC up to my 42" if I wanted to, then it would feel like I was actually playing my xbox in my room though (only the PC version of FO3 seems far buggier and less reliable).
As for 7.1, well I don't have it but I know for sure it won't be as big a jump from surround as surround was from stereo so what's your point?
Do you want to tell me about your flashing lights in your PC case too? I don't have them either so clearly I shouldn't have posted.....

Spare me the whole community make the FO3 better than NV lecture.

If one game is superior to the other, I don't see how mod can make the superior become worst.

to the OP

great, great read
reminds me of my old rant about FO3
albeit more constructive
and not shot down by Bethesda (yet)

to Ylurien

please
for the sake of all of us

don't confuse Gamebryo for only consisting of Oblivion/Fallout 3/Fallout - New Vegas

I know it all sounds like you know what you're talking about
but obviously you haven't got a slightest clue

here, I'll give you a short run-down of Gamebryo games:

http://www.emergent.net/en/Clients--Titles/

tell me that you use Darnified UI for all of those...

*sigh*

Why do you feel sorry for the 360 users Ylurien? Yes it does svck for us that we don't have acces to the G.E.C.K. or modding in general, but some of us just prefer to do our gaming on consoles.
Me personally, I have never been comfortable while playing games on the P.C., I just don't care for the keyboard style of gaming. I have played some games on the P.C., but truthfully with shooters it just isn't for me.
No, I'm not offended by your statement... just curious about what you meant.

Wow... This again.
Some people CAN'T get it for the PC. <_<

I am not dissing peoples choices with the following! (RE: Platform wars.To be clear.)

For those who like the feel of a controller vs KB/M but actually have a PC capable of playing the game, you can use a 360 controller natively. You need a wired controller, or the http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.31880 for a wireless controller. For the hardware geeks, you can even go a step further and hook up your PC to a larger TV. (Mine is hooked up to my 40" 1080p TV via HDMI as well as my 24" monitor via DVI.)

Best of both works for controller preference vs KB/M folks.

This allows you to use mods, better hardware to run the game, yet continue to use the controller.
