Rad Resistance

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 8:33 pm

OK, I could be completely misremembering this but I seem to remember that you could drop your rads per second all the way down to 0 in Fallout 3 with enough rad resistance. But in irradiated areas in F: NV you can't drop below 1 rad per second.

Even in an area where you are taking 1 rad per sec and you slap on a radiation suit and pop a Rad-X you still take 1 rad a second. Not only does that make no sense but it's quite annoying in quest areas. For instance, my wife hates "timed missions" and that is basically what those quests are since you are slowly dying of radiation poisoning while trying to complete them.

Does anyone else think that this should be fixed or do people like the high blood pressure that accompanies timed missions?

If nothing else I'd like to see a fix so that rad resistance drops your rads per second to 0 in areas where it is normally 1 per second and drop to 1 per second in areas where it is 2 or more rads per second. At least that way rad resistance actually has a use in areas that are normally 1 rad per second. Right now rad resist is totally useless in those areas.

1 rad/second is the lowest it displays. You can be getting fractions of 1/second and it'll still say 1/s.

Rad resistance is a percentage, not a subtraction. Even Fallout 3 maxxed at 85%. So you could never get 0/s.

In Fallout 3 with mods i often had rad resistance ~130% with equipment and drugs, rads still accumulated, but it never went higher than 1/sec. Maybe there's similar system as with Damage Treshold, some of it always goes trough?

This. My take is that even if you're not getting 1rad/second, this is the lowest the rads/second will get.

Yep, you're completely misremembering. Minimum achievable in Fallout 3 = 1 rad per second displayed.

But in irradiated areas in F: NV you can't drop below 1 rad per second.

Correct, just like Fallout 3.

Not only does that make no sense but it's quite annoying in quest areas. Find another game that suits her better? Mods to make this one suit her better? Lots of possible answers.

Does anyone else think that this should be fixed or do people like the high blood pressure that accompanies timed missions?

I don't see any need for a "fix," as I don't see where anything is broken to be fixed.

As for the over-the-top wailing about "high blood pressure that accompanies timed missions," I like the idea of things having consequences. Entering irradiated areas means you soak up radiation, and radiation resistance is not equal to radiation immunity. Should enemies firing at you be removed since that could cause similar "high blood pressure" situations? Anything that could harm your character could cause such a situation, too. What shall we do about that? I personally see no difference, so in my mind the idea of adding total radiation immunity for non-ghoul player characters is equivalent to adding a completely damage-resistant, invulnerable godmode.

Nope sorry, the only thing I see here is not cause for changes to the game- maybe a reason to evaluate whether you and your wife should continue playing it, or perhaps get into installing mods to transform it from what it is now into something you can enjoy playing.

Most timed missions are designed so that you're cutting it slightly close. The variance of factors here makes that not really the case. Go in with enough rad resistance, rad-X, and radaway, you can still take your time.

Ummm.. you're joking, right?

There's just not THAT many places where you get spammed with radiation. Use a good rad-blocking suit, and keep a good stock (20+) of Rad-X and Rad-Away.

Keeps the rads-per-second down, and two (or three) rad-aways when you hit the first level of rad-poisoning.. and you're good. I went through Vault 34 really very easily with just that setup. And I only had the low-rank rad-suit for armor.

Then not to mention that 100 caps is pretty low and easy to get a full rad-clean at any doc. Hardly that high-pressure or hard to deal with. Just make sure you've got the right tools.

This is my understanding of it as well.

Slightly on topic: When I did Vault 34 I was woefully underprepared. I actually had to run out after acheiving most things down there and then come back later because I was about 20 rads away from dying. First time that has happened, and it was kind of cool.

To the OP, I can understand that the ticking might feel like you can't take your time on a mission, but as others said, a good rad suit along with rad-x and rad-away will solve this problem, as you'll be absorbing radiation at a very low rate. Both drugs and a suit are easily available, so get a small stock before you go in. :)

The only place I know of where rads could be a problem is Vault 34, but I was able to complete the vault with no rad suit or perks and only one RadAway on me, since there were plenty of RadX and RadAway to find in the vault.

Same here, athough it was a close call for me. I was well over 800 rads when I left.

I hate timed missions in games too. Oblivion had one of these, I would use every console cheat I could get my hands on to get through that quest.

However, with Radiation and this game, the timer can be maniupulated. A few Rad-X, several Radaways and the timer can be slowed down or reset with ease. With an Radiation Suit, Advanced Radiation Suit, a Space Suit or the correct armor that makes it even better.

I have been in all the super radiated areas in the game, with proper meds alone, there is no real sense of urgency to get things done on time. Without meds, yes, it is much more stressful.

Radiation suits SHOULD make low radiation levels not affect you if you are wearing it.

An example would be coming across an area that has 1 rad/sec, while wearing your suit it should become 0 rad/sec because the suit should be capable enough to absorb the radiation. Isn't that the whole point of radiation suits?

It did...?

Oh right, the Great Gate. That had more than enough time to finish it, especially if you sneak around enemies.

As for timed missions, make a hard save before trying, and reload it if you get into an impossible situation. I'm not a fan of those either, in fact there's only on mission type i hate more: escort :swear: Haven't seen one of those yet in New Vegas, thankfully.

And radiation "timers" are easy enough to deal with, though i did almost die while getting out of a certain Vault (978 rads with no rad-aways remaining).

Agree with that completely. Timed missions - urgh, no thanks, I get enough of an adrenalin rush opening bills when they drop through my letterbox... irradiated areas are easily manageable with meds, and there aren't that many highly irradiated locations.

Radiation is such a non-issue in Fallout 3/New Vegas that honestly I don't see why they even bother. Rad-X and Rad-Away are cheap and common, and they completely trivialize radiation. I would rather see it where you only very slowly accumulate radiation, but, it actually starts to kill at higher dosage levels instead of just taking 2 points off your strength or whatever, and it should be a lot harder to get rid of. In the real world there's almost nothing we can do about radiation exposure. For the most part you either live or you die and all the doctors can do is make you comfortable. Wandering into irradiated areas should be a serious decision with long-lasting consequences, not "Do I have enough drugs to make it through without being affected".

I may be alone in this opinion.

Is the radiation any more unrealistic then getting shot? maybe they should have realistic damage to, that be a fun video game......

I'm sure most already know this but it will kill you if you don't do anything at all. I keeled over dead from rads one time when I wasn't paying attention.
But yes, I agree that with the over abundance of Rad-Away etc. that there is zero "scary" factor to radiation in this game, as long as you're not distracted by eating a bowl of soup while letting your companion do some killing. ;)

Seriously, radiation is basically just a meter. Why stress it, baby? (Curse you, Benny!) But if it were more serious it'd actually be a meter I gave a glance at unless i was in Vault 34. Seriously, with all the Rad-Away and Rad-X, radiation may as well be like sleep in hardcoe mode, just kind of there, because it makes sense, but never really a pain.

JJ what you are asking doesn't make sense theoretically.

You know how in real life there are these things called germs?? And they make this product called Lysol?? They claim that their product kills 99.9% of germs. If you buy a can the front label reads "Kills 99.9% of viruses & bacteria". If you turn the can around they get more in detail on the types of viruses and bacteria. If you read the direction of use you will find to actually disinfect you have to let the product's disinfect spray stand for ten minutes. But for how wide does the spray disinfect? For how long does it last? How fast does viruses and bacteria grow back on disinfected area? Does it matter on what type of virus or bacteria? Besides that long run off of Lysol, in the game you can never be 100% rad resistant anyways lol. So you're always taking some rads buddy. :P

Only if you were a Ghoul...then it would heal you... :D

Well, in a way, you always get 0 RADS/second, when you're not in an irradiated area.
