Bugs You've Come Across

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 4:55 pm

Hey, I had a question, and I'm sorry if this isn't the best thread to post it in. I've been playing New Vegas on the 360 for about 15 hours game time and haven't run into any major bugs so far (other than lag and load times increasing the longer I play in one session, and a few messed up map markers once). I don't have broadband internet at home so I wont be able to download any patches until after Thanksgiving when I can take my Xbox to my girlfriend's house. Is it likely that I'll run into any major problems before then if I keep playing? I have a few save files (about 7) but I usually just save over my last one. About how often should I start a new one? Any advice for smooth playing?

Thanks. Love New Vegas!

Lily's vertibird sword is always 5 feet in front of her, but it moves as if she is holding it correctly. Oh, her assault carbine is fused with the sword as well.

These are the performance bugs I have experienced in 30 hours of gameplay on a fat 60 gig PS3.

I have already posted these in the PS support forums. If this thread is only for non-performance bugs, I apologize for contributing incorrectly to this discussion.

- Had at least 25 PS3 full-locks and 1 crash to PS3 XMB.
- Constant drops in framerate and second-long hangups
- Unresponsive controls (I can't count how many times I've tried to shoot or open up VATS and nothing happens until I mash the buttons for several seconds)
- Damage does not register with a direct hit (not the too-close-to-hit issue)
- Flashing textures
- Visual artifacts appearing out of nowhere and disappearing
- Widespread clipping issues with entities throughout the entire game (I love how when I touch things, everything around it slowly floats up a few inches)
- NPC's spawning halfway or sometimes completely in the ground
- Unresponsive NPC's (Not being able to talk to them when I should be able to, enemies wandering blindly with no reaction to me being near or shooting at them)

I'm glad many people can play this game without these problems. If I could do it over again, I'd wait until I upgraded my PC and would buy Fallout:NV for the PC.

I can understand game breaking bugs for the PC, but for consoles it is inexcusable since there is nothing you can do but wait for a patch. I'd be furious if I had a console, bought a 50-60 dollar game only to have it be unplayable.

I think the law's need to change for returning opened software. I understand the concerns about copying disks, but to have no recourse when buying software that doesn't function properly is garbage. If Sony is going to authorize the sale of a game that has these issues, and the stores wont except returns, where is the resolution for the customer? Lawsuits or shut up?

I can't complete For the Republic quest because (w/o going into spoiler territory) a certain dialogue choice will not appear when it should! I have to either reload a save back quite a ways and CHANGE my playstyle or complete the independent quest line now (which changes what I've wanted to do from the beginning).

Pretty important quest to have this big of a bug :cryvaultboy:

Shooting a ghoul with the Incinerator only to watch the fireballs pass through him, Had the game go back to PS3 XMB twice on my slim 250G PS3 so it's not just the fat PS3, seen the NPCs stuck in the ground a few times too.

ED-E vanishing, but still registering as a companion
Random companion death
ED-E randomly attacking NCR.
.44 SWC not unlocked by Hand Loader, have to pass some stupid skill check in North Vegas, and the recipe there is unusable without Hand Loader,
Oh and a lot of stuff in the CE Guide is wrong, and since you cant patch a book, you'll have to take a look at the Guide and patch the game.

Not so much of a bug, more some "inconsistency":

Soldiers of the 1st recon squad at Camp McCaran are wishing that 1st recon would watch over them.
So do the "normal" NCR troops there. :D

Edit:
Wait - I just remembered a very weird bug I encountered only yesterday.

Warning - very mild spoiler ahead!

Late during the quest were you have to bring a certain person to a certain boomer, the quest log said I should talk to her and the marker was at the door of the boomer base.
When I got there however she wasn't to be found, instead a couple of corn plants had sprouted at the entrance (in a cross like pattern, some in the air).
Seems the boomers have a secret superweapon that transforms people to plants. :D

I reloaded the last auto-save and the 2nd time she was there, letting me finish the quest.

The bug was a signed death warrant for Rex, as I was unable to recruit him to get his surgery, I had done Dr. Henry's quest and had Lupa's brain ahead of time as well.

Some bugs I've tracked down in the GECK

- There's a bug that causes safes and lockers with a combination of a fixed amount of caps plus a random additional amount to not have the fixed amount. Example: Atomic Wrangler, the Garrets' floor safe in their bedroom is supposed to have 358 + rand(1-9) caps when looking at the inventory in GECK. It actually has just rand(1-9) caps. Kind of annoying if you've gone to the trouble of sneaking into their private area, pickpocketing a key or picking a very hard safe lock, and find.. 4 caps?

- If you've ever triggered one of Veronica's statements that lead to starting her quest (I Could Make You Care), you can no longer get the Scribe Counter special unarmed attack from her, because of a 1-line bug in a script that fails to reset a timer object that is shared between the two.

- The performance scripts in the Aces are just sloppy. It's way too easy for the script to get into a state that it doesn't have a case for, which results in performers refusing to perform, staying on stage forever, etc. Similarly, the Talent Pool quest is buggy in that it doesn't properly handle the case where more than one performer is recruited before going back and talking to Tommy Torini.

I gotta say, reading the scripts in the GECK makes me amazed that the game works; there is a lot of slapdash code in there.

All that said, I played through the game, hit a few bugs that annoyed me, but my game never broke in a way I couldn't work around, and I enjoyed playing it a lot. But I'm cutting them a lot of slack because I like the writing and scenario a ton.

My friend had a problem where NCR ranger always attacked him for no reason. He has a neutral reputation with NCR and legion, hated by powder ganger. He wear the pre-war suit (I do not remember exactly what), and has ed-e as a companion. Even when he uses the NCR armor, he was still attacked by ranger.

Had something similar at Helios, but it wasn’t a ranger, just an unnamed NCR soldier. I hear all this shooting, turn around and there it is blasting away at the soldier for some reason or another.

I also had a strange bug where the NCR soldiers (I was without companions this time) at the 188 Trading Post decided to shoot me up for no reason. I was neutral at the time and remained so after killing all of them (five or six, I believe). Several hours and many NCR encounters later, none have attacked me randomly since.

Well, the game's pretty unpredictable. I can't tell you if you will for sure run across any bugs, though it is very likely. Just make sure you make enough saves in between eachother and don't leave the game running for too long or it's for sure going to crash. Happened to me oh so many times.

Hey guys, so far I've heard really great reviews about the game from everyone, and the only people that said it svck are the impatient television hosts. So, I've been thinking, since Fallout is such a huge game, there are so many places to find so many bugs that can really mess up the game. I think it would be really helpful for Bethesda & Obsidian if there were more posts about the many glitches you've come across, and tell what you think can be done to fix them.

Companions won"t stop initiating conversations. Boone in particular, even when you send them to the base, they still keep it up. I don't know if there's a better way but i had to kill him.
