:whisper: That's emu.

Our education system wasn't that great back then either...

Back in the '80s, an emo was an Australian bird...

The post punk movement.., err.. genre, that came out of the '70s punk, sometimes called the uber gay coinage of 'new wave' (sorry, hated that name even back then..)

..and listened to seriously depressing music from the Cult, the Cure, the Boomtown Rats (what Bob Geldof did for a living before saving Africa..), Joy Division and later on New Order.

hope u like :)

I thought they were mostly classed as goth bands, alongside the likes of the Sisters of Mercy and so on, which I admit I went through a phase of listening to in my teens. New Wave seemed to mostly involve bizarre and silly haircuts like A Flock of Seagulls and the craply moustachioed Midge Urgh of Ultravox. Hmm, now I have the urge to listen to some embarrassing music.

Just so you know, if you think emo is My Chemical Romance, you probably wouldn't know the type of music I'm trying to talk about here. There were no wrists cut making any of the records I like.

There were no wrist cuts in MCR either

BTW even though I'm a massive MCR fan I don't think they're emo at all

On topic, not exactly very knowledgeable about emo music.

Not really sure where I stand on the whole emo music scene, but if I might make a suggestion to the OP? Take a look at the opening post of the metal thread. If you're serious about having this be an ongoing thread, put up rules for posting so you can try to keep the trolls to a minimum.

Thanks for the advice, man. I shall take it to heart.
Uh... I intended to start a conversation about anything but Hawthorne Heights, but I should have known that practically no one listens to Algernon Cadwallader.

The thing about emo, as well as all the genres that start with post- or end in -core. Ive never been able to really nail down what the hell they are. I just know that I do not generally like people that consider themselves emo, cause they whine a lot and throw pity parties, and have a lot of useless drama attached. Its much removed from Metal and what Metalheads stand for, so I do look down on it.

See, that's not at all what I'm speaking of at all. I'm sure what you're thinking of are those bands that were popular a few years back with the hair over their eyes and the lyrics about knives and bleeding eyes and all that. This kind of music doesn't sound like that at all, and the lyrics are usually about girls, beer, and how much they want it to be summer.

I actually took that from a band's last.fm description. I think it may have been Joie De Vivre.

I personally think that music has been screwed up beyond repair with the introduction of the internet. As close minded as everyone was with music before, now, since it's so simple to amass a vast library of songs for your small niche, it's brought to a whole new extreme.

Neither, but when I list my favourite bands people say 'oh all that emo [censored]'

See, most of my favourite bands define themselves as Post-hardcoe. I have no idea what that means, since they all sound quite different and only one or two could be called 'Emo'.

Aren't most emo bands like
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnaFpQaGFCA (I actually like these guys)

I used (hah!) to love them back in "the day". Back then they were pretty hardcoe

Same here.

BVB on the other hand... I was amazed the day I stumbled across one of their videos and saw it had 20 million views or something. Talk about depressing. Edit: err maybe not that many... but too many!

Even my friends who like them say they're emo and I slowly explain they're not emo and they themselves have stated they dislike emo and consider themselves just a rock a band. My friends are like "Pfff...they have black make up and black suits and everything. They're basically goth"...
