The thread for genuine emo fans to discuss genuine emo music

Post » Sat Jun 18, 2011 4:01 am

Oh hello, Controversial Title, didn't see you there.
So, I don't know if there's anyone else on this forum who shares my love of indie emo music, but if so, here's the place to discuss it! Shows, bands, releases, and interesting anecdotes are welcome.
Just so you know, if you think emo is My Chemical Romance, you probably wouldn't know the type of music I'm trying to talk about here. There were no wrists cut making any of the records I like (actually, I have no way of proving that). This kind of music sounds like Cap'n Jazz, and if you don't know who they were, then go out and buy a copy of anolphabetapolothology, please. And you're welcome.

Okay, may as well start the discussion. Who else has Algernon Cadwallader's new album? It leaked, and it's pretty good. Not sure if I like it as much as Some Kind Of Cadwallader, though, but it's definitely a solid LP.

I'm not entirely sure what that means.

Great band. One of my favorites. Well, I said it in my first post, I'll say it again, go check out Cap'n Jazz, they were phenomenal. Then the Kinsellas' other projects, like American Football (which I actually think was better than Cap'n Jazz), Joan of Arc (more experimental), and Owen (Mike Kinsella's solo acoustic project).
Algernon Cadwallader is a great modern band, and Park Jefferson may be the next big thing.

Is emo considered a genre of music officially now? I'm not being an ass, I'm really wondering if it's an actual genre, or just something people group music "unofficially" into.

Emo has been a genre for decades.

Back in the 80s and 90s, it was just kind of an obscure subgenre of punk and indie rock, then a form of it reached mainstream popularity, and from there, I think (and bear in mind that this is just my own thought) that's where it started just being a term under which bands were lumped based on a certain sound that they all loosely shared. Now bands have been forming that sound more like the older ones, and once again, it's just a fairly obscure subgenre of punk and indie rock.

Rites of Spring was...alright I guess. Mostly liked them because they just sounded like a punk band that screamed a lot. With that said, original emo, or emocore, didnt sound anything like the stuff from today, the "wrist cutter" music some call it. Emo probably has to be the most overused word in contemporary lexicon. If you even look like you once owned Seventeen Seconds, your called "emo" LOL.

I think you just flipped the ass switch...

I'm kind of with you on this one though. Emo really isn't a genre of music anymore as no artists want to call themselves emo....its just not marketable. I used to make more than a teenagers wage off of designs for "emo" bands when I was in highschool; I road the Myspace wagon from start to finish and i'm still surrounded by people who are in both the independent and major label industry and i'm 100% sure, emo as the genre has completely diluted to nothing.

At some point in time people used to call major label productions like Dashboard confessional, Brand New and Panic! At the Disco emo. In todays age those bands wouldn't be caught dead carrying that label on them. Skrillex, dubstep sensation used to be in the ultimate emo/screamo band called From First to Last. He still gets heckled to this day.

I think this http://re1000.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/evolution_of_the_hipster.jpg describes what happened to all those kids that listened to the genre though. :P

IS this music like that Hawthorn Heights band? I dated a girl a few years back ago who was deep into this type of music. They had a song called Ohio Is For Lovers that she played every second I was with her (car radio, ipod, ringtone, etc).

Ohio is for Lovers helped brand the genre.

The lyric, "Cut my wrists and black my eyes" enforced the terrible cliche.

Hawthorn Heights

Yes sir! Best emo band out there in my opinion. Though when Casey died they took a turn for the worse. Their music actually sounds happy on their fragile future album. Good album, but I liked If only you were lonely the best. haven't gotten around to hearing Skeletons yet, but am hoping to get my hands on it.

Not really sure where I stand on the whole emo music scene, but if I might make a suggestion to the OP? Take a look at the opening post of the metal thread. If you're serious about having this be an ongoing thread, put up rules for posting so you can try to keep the trolls to a minimum.

Back in the '80s, an emo was an Australian bird...

The post punk movement.., err.. genre, that came out of the '70s punk, sometimes called the uber gay coinage of 'new wave' (sorry, hated that name even back then..)

..and listened to seriously depressing music from the Cult, the Cure, the Boomtown Rats (what Bob Geldof did for a living before saving Africa..), Joy Division and later on New Order.
