The "Labeled as" Metal thread

Aw, you guys made the bear grumpy.

Anyway, to get this thing back on topic: I'm getting into The Devil Wears Prada and Black Veil Brides, and I'm liking both so far.

Eh true...So Rohugh do you like any metal bands?

The stuff that they discuss in the metal thread - no. I have tried to listen to some of it but it is not for me. Maybe something will turn up in this topic, we will see although it is generally not my style. I am into more laid back music these days.

I have been listening to a lot of NIN lately. Honestly I think that their first album, "Pretty Hate Machine", is their best.

A lot of Electric Wizard songs are horizontal.

But, otherwise, the rules in the metal thread are there for a reason, they are quite easy to understand I think, they still encompass a massive amount of music, from bands like Agalloch to those like Bathory, the rules are there to make life easy, there is after all a massive amount of variety in the metal genre, tagging other non-metal genres of music (however similar) just adds more effort into finding music people enjoy.

Somebody was talking about "noise" music earlier, I'm not really knowledgeable on the genre myself, but you should definitely check out Sunn O))) as well as Xela's "In bocca al Lopa", phenomenal noise work. There is of course a lot more, but they are the only two off the top of my head that I listen to.

I'm also a massive TOOL fan, I still think "Sober" and "Wings of Marie" are my favourite tracks.

I'm kind of curious as to the definition of the different genre's of metal. Because to be honest I have no earthly idea what the difference between metalcore, metal, deathcore, or any of that other stuff is.

For those of you who like German metal:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6r-ENv0PMY-Rammstein- definitely not metal, Might like this one Rohugh, it's one of their softer songs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytRQjrP4A0s-Rammstein- A bit heavier than the last one. One of my favorite songs by them, really good music video too.

just found out that my friends were convinced I was a total metal head because of my typically long hair (its not long now) which is funny because I hate most metal.

Metalcore originally meant a mix of heavy metal with hardcoe punk. Now the term sort of got bastardized to mean bands that play somewhat poppy sounding melodic metal. Check out Integrity, Ringworm, and Starkweather if you'd be interested in the real stuff.

Deathcore is basically death metal mixed with the worst parts of new school metalcore. Down tuned guitar chugging, lots of breakdowns, vocals that are typically guttural or squealed. This obviously doesn't apply to ALL of it, but the majority is a pretty big offender.

On another note, anybody ever been to a Five Finger Death Punch concert?

I saw them at the Mayhem Festival last summer. They were [censored] awesome. I hope to see them on the next tour cycle when their new album comes out in a few weeks.

Whatever, it's still pointless having 2 identical threads because certain bands don't fit into the arbitrary boundaries of the metal genre, according to a few people in an OP written years ago.

Nobody said you have to post or read the topic. Besides, it's not like we don't have rehashes and multiple threads about other stuff all the time. Also the Metal thread and its rules have been around since before I joined back in '06. So it's kind of a staple.

I saw Tool in concert a few years ago at Summerfest and it was kind of a let down. I still enjoy their music though.

I've seen them a couple of times in Melbourne. Both times were great. Long sets, tight performances, great artwork. One of my favourite bands.

I have never seen more hatred for music than in topics pertaining to metal. Not just that they hate other genres, but there are always, always ceaseless arguments about what the definition of metal truly is. Why do people care? It's not the genre that makes the music, it's the artist. I certainly love and hate certain artists that belong to the same genre, but that doesn't mean it's a bad genre and you need to go inventing new terms to distance it from other bands. I mean really, does each metal band have its own genre these days?

Pop music sounds more different than other pop music to me than Metal does to other metal. Yet Pop music is always just "Pop". When it comes to metal, I really can't see the difference most times.

I like Dream Theater, Tool, Soundgarden, and Porcupine Tree. The latter isn't as metal as most other things, but I don't give a damn.

I used to like Tool, then I stopped liking them. They just don't seem interesting enough for me anymore. APC however is still great. Metalcore wise, Killswitch Engage and All That Remains are my favorite from that genre, the latter being more so especially after their Overpower album. Such great guitar playing.
Diecast is another from that genre that I enjoy, but they aren't very popular. And even though I don't have any albums, I've enjoyed every song I've heard from The Sword.

Then I got a big liking for classic rock. The majority of it I can listen to and enjoy, which I never saw coming.

i'm kind of like this. i still like them a lot and i'm pumped for their new album but they used to be pretty much my favorite band ever and now they're just kind of in the background.

i actually kind of stopped caring about them around the same time i stopped listening to most post-rock. maybe there's a connection.

also i used to like Porcupine Tree a lot more than i do now. i don't really care about them at all anymore.

I am into more laid back music these days.

Really?! I never saw a Tool live performance but I assumed they were pretty good for some reason  I don't know that many of their songs but I enjoy a few.

I was in bleachers in a section fairly close. They didn't play many songs and had like 25 minute breakdowns that seemed to go on forever. If I wasn't sober for it, it would've been more enjoyable maybe? All I remember was some drunk dude behind me didn't like Tool at all and was making fun of them for the first hour until about 5 guys "made" him leave.

I agree with this actually. An artist's quality isn't related to what genre he's labeled as but by his talent. However since genres do exist and the metal thread imposes a certain set of rules this topic is really about talking music that's genreally viewed and labeled as metal but aren't allowed in the official metal thread, so metalcore, industrial metal etc..are all included :) Please keep this mind, this thread is not for the discussion of the definition of metal but the discussion of it's music :)

I also like Dream Theater, I know most people say their old stuff is better and without denying that, I like A Rite of Passage, it's a really cool song.

I agree with Sober, plus Schism, Parabola and Vicarious (I know those three were in a Guitar Hero game but it's actually a coincidence that they're my favourite :P).

normal Tool videos are 50% claymation people twitching around in a dark room and 50% weird mutants standing in place in a bright room.

i mean for christ's sake apart from showing actual news footage the dude's got a BARCODE on the back of his neck. the song may be pretty blunt lyrically but it's not THAT blunt, and Adam would never be that blunt in a video. this is like some Porcupine Tree [censored].

Admittedly, I haven't kept up with the video aspect of Tool. Are they still doing the claymation that much?
