The "Labeled as" Metal thread

Post » Sun Jul 17, 2011 2:41 pm

Hello everybody, quoting the official metal thread:

"The Metal thread is for discussion of metal. Nu-metal (Slipknot, KoRn, Rage Against the Machine etc.) is not metal. Neither are hardcoe nor metalcore (Atreyu, Killswitch Engage, Norma Jean, Avenged Sevenfold, older Trivium etc.). Industrial bands like Rammstein, NIN, Deathstars and Ministry are off-limits.
Bands that contributed to the rise of Metal but are not Metal themselves (Led Zeppelin, Rush, Deep Purple) are also off-limits. Other bands to avoid posting about: Tool, System of a Down, Marilyn Manson".

Although not being a major metal fan I actually enjoy some songs from bands that are considered metal but are off limits on the metal thread. As such this topic is for discussion of bands that are usually labeled as metal but are off limits in the metal thread, like the ones mentioned above.

Of course, like any thread, everyone has a right to their own opinion so no bashing someone's musical taste :)

Please keep this mind, this thread is not for the discussion of the definition of metal but the discussion of it's music.

P.S: This thread is approved by the moderators.

I saw Tool in concert a few years ago at Summerfest and it was kind of a let down. I still enjoy their music though.

Really?! I never saw a Tool live performance but I assumed they were pretty good for some reason  I don't know that many of their songs but I enjoy a few.

Avenged Sevenfold is my greatest love.

I'm not sure about the classification of metal/"labeled as" metal (judging by what I've seen on these forums, it seems to be a lot more specific than I used to think...), but it seems that I'm allowed to post about A7X here, since the OP mentions them. :P

I've seen them live once, and it was awesome. They came to Finland this summer (like they promised to last winter when they were last here), but I couldn't go because I was already busy then. So annoyed. <_<

No kidding. Partially why I created this :P

I only a couple A7X songs  Afterlife is pretty cool :)

BTW I myself also really like SOAD, especially Chop Suey  I actually Serj Tankian's solo projects though but those aren't metal at all :P

Oh thank God!!! Finally!

I never got why they made so many stupid rules about what bands you can post about in the other one. I mean seriously?! Are we really going to narrow down music into hundreds of specific categories?!

Anyways the new AX7 song 'So Far Away' is really good. And has Rammstein come out with anything new lately? I used to be really into them but haven't kept up with them.

I don't know if So Far Away can be called "new" anymore, but it's awesome all the same. :)

RIP The Rev :(

Not Ready To Die, 4AM and the whole of the Nightmare album are good, as well, but I prefer their "older stuff". Favorite album would have to be Live in the LBC & Diamonds In The Rough, which is from 2008, iirc. Don't know if that can be construed as "older", but still. :P

the lines between what's metal and what's not metal can seem a bit arbitrary at times but they make sense sometimes. also genres are kind of important.

along the veins of not-metal, i've been getting into what last.fm calls NEOCRUST, though last.fm genres are silly and i haven't listened to enough traditional crust to tell if there's any real difference in styles. the tag seems to specifically refer to stuff that sounds like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWYR9WuAuhU, but none of the other stuff tagged really sounds anything like this.

If I may interrupt. Does this thread mean "discuss bands that could be/are metalcore, deathcore, nu-metal, etc.?"

seems like it. i assume it extends to heavier hardcoe and (what's now considered) screamo, too.

pretty much it sounds like "if it's something that you think could fall under the confines of The Metal Thread if not for a couple things then post it here".

unless i'm wrong and it really just means metalcore and rammstein and tool in which case i'll have to go start my own OFFICIAL hardcoe/NOISE THREAD NO BATHERS ALLOWED.

Ahhh okay, thanks sir!

So to start my post:

Anyone here fans of All Shall Perish? And here their new album/bought it? If you like bands like Veil of Maya, As Blood Runs Black, and Despised Icon. Check 'em out. They have less breakdowns than most "core" bands. Which is awesome. If you like "core" type stuff, definitely check them out.

Amen, bro! About time we got to discuss these bands and call them metal without being ridiculed!

Anyways in celebration, listen to some of these guys, a band out of Tyler, TX (which is only 30 minutes away from me)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JK6e4NsDAOE
Sick song, they have a great balance of melody and heavy

On another note, anybody ever been to a Five Finger Death Punch concert?

Always been a big fan of Rage Against the Machine. :) Great band. Kind've a shame to see them lumped together with nu metal bands like Slipknot and KoRn, as they're better than that in my opinion. A lot better. And 'rap metal' would be a more appropriate tag for them.

Surely it'd make more sense for the metal thread to stop being pretentious [censored]s and start letting genres that are microscopically different in, rather than have two nearly identical threads on the front page?

Crust is pretty good stuff, not a big fan of the neocrust stuff, though. Someone should start up a general hardcoe/crust/powerviolence thread.

The difference between genres is actually pretty large to someone that listens to metal. No one in the metal thread is being pretentious.

I've listened to all forms of metal, and while there are differences, why can't we just have an actual Metal thread that includes all types of metal, instead of "hey look, this is the METAL thread, but you can't talk about these types of metal". It doesn't make sense when you think about it, at least not to me

but then you've got like three people talking about and looking for BLACKENED ELECTRODOOMCORE while everybody else is talking about infinitely more popular styles of music like metalcore or deathcore or whatever and the threads get overloaded and fights break out and then everything's banned and nobody talks about music anymore.

it would be best to just drop this whole argument and leave the metal thread for metal and this thread for not-metal. if you can't tell if something is metal or not-metal then it's probably not-metal and therefore belongs here.

(i hate music so much)

Someone should start up a general hardcoe/crust/powerviolence thread.

this would be fantastic but i kind of think the less SPECIFIC GENRE THREADS there are the better. like i'd totally make a noise/powerelectronics/EAI thread but there'd be like maybe six people who even know enough about it to post ever.

Yeah, a large amount of specific genre threads could create too much clutter in CD.

Regarding noise, I was quite impressed at how well power electronics stuff could annihilate my ears. :P

Whatever, it's still pointless having 2 identical threads because certain bands don't fit into the arbitrary boundaries of the metal genre, according to a few people in an OP written years ago.

they're not identical though. think of it like this because it'll make everything easier - the metal thread is for Ninnghizhidda, the not-metal thread is for Trivium.

anyway drop it LET'S TALK ABOUT MUSIC.

CURRENT TOPIC: FAVORITE METALCORE/DEATHCORE BREAKDOWNS.

(i don't mean to hijack this thread but for real)

I can't stand deathcore, but I love metalcore going by the old school definition.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Y-P2lv7mG8 do metalcore breakdowns the best, IMO.

I agree.. I can't say that I care too much though

I've yet to come across a metalcore/deathcore/rap metal/nu metal/whatever else band that I actually like though.. Btbam included (). Perhaps this thread will show me the light.

There are the two topics now so you can discuss all the music that fits into the general descriptions.

Stop complaining and certainly stop flaming, it makes me grumpy - just be grateful you can discuss the music, or is that asking too much?

I don't mean to offend, but I'm glad that the bands that are off-topic in the metal thread are just that, off-topic. I'd rather not have to sift through pages of nu-metal in that thread. Once again, I don't mean to offend, but I don't consider the bands in this thread to be metal... like at all.
