Games you thought were great, but were slated by the media.

Driver 3. Gamespot said it's best feature was it's pre-rendered cutscenes.

Sure it was buggy, sometimes ridiculously so, but I greatly enjoyed the physics engine, the damage model, exploring the different cities not just limited to North America and car chases were often more intense than GTA's.

It sadly had to compete with San Andreas (also came out in 2004), though, that's why it got unfair reviews. It wasn't as fresh and fun as the first two (legendary games, those are) but it certainly wasn't terrible.

Well except for the shooting parts anyway :teehee:

Nier - It wasn't the best looking game, but it was damn fun and had a fantastic story. Great soundtrack too.

Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon - I can see why reviewers criticized this one, though I still think they were a bit harsh. The gameplay was somewhat clunky, but far from unplayable. A wonderful score that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzRMOsyr3Cg&feature=related for one of the most hauntingly sad games I've ever played. If anyone with a Wii is interested in a different take on the post apocalyptic shtick, I'd check this out.

YES! I love Colosseum: Road to Freedom! Pure awesome, though I could see a lot of room for improvement with regards to more RPG aspects. The combat is spot-on, though it took a while to get used to it. I also loved the training days, though I only did the exercising one because it was easiest. Once it comes down in price, I'm buying Gladiator: Begins, which is by the same dev studio and is the PSP incarnation of C:RtF. Warriors of the Lost Empire was also developed by Goshow, I really liked the combat and skills. The dev team is pretty good for historical accuracy, much better than Shadow of Rome did in the historic-fidelity department with regards to actual gladiatorial combat.

Wow that's all news to me, i had heard something about a sequel but i did not know it was on psp, i sold mine a few months back, ah well such is life :( will definitely be checking out warriors of the lost empire, i really missed out on that one it seems.

Deadly Premonition.

thissssss. the gameplay was weird and the QTEs were annoying and lots of things were kind of nonsensical but the writing and the performances in particular were really solid. best Twin Peaks since Twin Peaks.

also, Far Cry 2. the media response was kind of average but everybody [censored] all over it and i don't get why other than "it wasn't the same as the first game". there were a lot of really weird/bad design decisions yeah but it was still an incredibly solid experience that was only really hampered by its lack of mod tools.

also Precursors and Boiling Point. and http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/r_pathologic_pc.

I played the divinity 2 DKS demo. Any negativity is justified. Poor controls, poor voice acting, gameplay, graphics, story, etc.

Good music though.

Oh well its your oppinion, but for me, I tried to like it, I really did. But just couldnt.

The demo doesn't even begin to do the game justice, it has some really well done quest lines and fun gameplay.

IIRC there wasnt a way to block attacks just dodge. I played a ranger one of my first quests "go into that cave and kill skillingtons in closed environments".

The balence is off too Range > Mage > Warrior. It may be the demo, but after that, I just lost interest. Even if the game gets better, the idea of going through that again is just too off putting.

Yeah it had some problems with balance, but the quests I found made up for that. There are some tough choices in some of the quests that I really liked and plus there was this puzzle that I thought was pretty good as well. I understand that a game has to pull you in at least the 2 hours in order to find it good. The gameplay is a bit clunky, but like ska8tdude said the demo really doesn't do it justice.

Dynasty Warriors(most of them)

Dynasty warriors! during my years as a console-only gamer they were pretty much the only strategy games available, i looked on with envy at all the pc strategy games as consoles went through a terrible strategy drought for many years, dynasty warriors was a very welcome and unique series in that it included strategy along with the action, that they kept getting sixes and sevens out of ten was a travesty, they were far better than that, although on occasion i did have nightmares in my sleep of fighting wave after wave of soldiers if i had played too much that day

Because the media believe that their opinion means more than everyone elses and of course the gullible people are the more they'll believe that the game is bad. They want the Perfect Game. Until you play the game you can't say it's horrible and it svcks.

When I was talking about historical accuracy, I meant Colosseum: RtF. Warriors of the Lost Empire (which is a PSP game) takes place in an alternate-reality/history sort of thing. Yeah, it's still ancient Roman/greek times, but it isn't a real slice out of history like Colosseum's plot with Commodeus' murder (imagine my surprise when I came across the incident in a history book - I didn't know the game had based its plot on an actual historical event!).

I played Gladiator: Begins demo, and I'm a little unsure about it, since I can't tell if it is fully an accurate representation of the game mechanics. I like how there are more arenas, and it looks like there will be more options political-wise. There's more character customization, including the option to be female, but it was a char-gen screen, not like how char gen was handled in Colosseum (which I really liked!). I was puzzled that attribute points seemed to be gained after an arena bout, the number of which depended on how well the character performed for the audience. I much prefer how Colosseum handled it. Skills, too, were earned (rather than dropped by enemies). I think it'll still be fun, but probably have some acute differences from Colosseum - not necessarily bad differences, but it'll be hard not to make comparisons when the music and skill-tablet art are recycled! Oh, and we see good old Magerius again. None of the dialog is voiced, but the NPC's face will change expression during the dialog to reflect his/her mood. I think the models are really slick, I was impressed with the quality.

I hope a new Colosseum type game is made. There's a lot of untapped potential. I had a lot of ideas for how to improve colosseum - more NPCs you can talk to (like in Shadow of Rome), different gladiator schools you could be sold to (rather than just Magerius'), more venues, and more use of the different https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/List_of_Roman_gladiator_types#List. More RPG-ish stuff like that.

I never got to play Collosseum, a shame, because it looked fun.

Same for Phantom Brave. :(

Totally feel that mirrors edge was one of the most original games I've ever played, and EA has been a massive tease about confirming the existence of a sequel. Yes the game was too short, and the creative decision to animate cutscenes the way they did had the unfortunate backlash of making them look like esurance commercials, but all of these are minor details which could be easily remedied in a sequel.

Also, WET. Totally loved the demo but it got slammed just a little too much for me to commit to the full game. For those who don't know, it's essentially a third person shooter/slasher that looks like it was designed by Quentin terrentino.

I'd have to say Farcry 2. Not so much the critics but everyone else in general. I seem to love the same things everyone else hates about it. Some days I just want to hop in a game, sneak around, kill some NPCs and blow [censored] up. Farcry 2 does a very good job of letting be do all these things. Sure the story's kinda meh and the missions are repetative but to me these things aren't very important in an FPS, atleast not an FPS like Farcry 2.

Take out the extreme driving, and maybe make a better health system and I would say Far Cry 2. The transportation in that game was just horrible for me. The bus stations were few and far between, and the respawning checkpoints really harshed the fun.

Two Worlds. It's fine. It's not great, but it's not horrible. If you go into it expecting a decent, but at times sub par RPG then it's fine. The voice acting is one of those "so bad it's good" things. It's fun to laugh at.

Dark Messiah. I loved the combat. It was pretty awesome.

The Mount and Blade series doesn't seem to do as well as it should either. After you raise the unit cap on a decent PC the battles are pretty cool.

I'd like to try Metro 2033, but the used BARELY scratched disk I bought doesn't work. :/

Legends of Might and Magic

Ok, admittedly it wasn't a great game. But for whatever reason there was a community that formed and we played it for years. Even after support was dropped, the community stuck around. It's been dead for a while now, but that was my 2001-2005ish game.

Delta Force 2
Delta Force: Land Warrior
Delta Force: Task Force Dagger

...reviewers focused too much on the outdated graphics and the poor single-player AI, not giving the games enough credit for the amazing multiplayer experience.

Fighting Force - really fun co-op game on the PS1.
Sonic Chaos - not so much slated, as very underrated next to other early Sonic games. For me, it's easily one of the best.

The Last Remnant.

Sure, it has some of the typical jRPG annoyances (the main character, for instance), but it's a very good game. Unfortunately, most reviewers only graded it based on the flawed and buggy Xbox version, and not the polished, bug-free, and superior PC version.
