New and "Improved" facebook

Post » Thu Sep 22, 2011 3:20 pm

First off, if you are not a facebook user, don't bother responding with posts decrying social networking sites. This isn't the topic of this post, and it's not up for discussion.

So, if you are a facebook user it's impossible not to notice the new functionality that facebook unveiled today. Now, this is supposed to be just the primer for a massive overhaul that's reportedly taking place next week. I'm personally on the fence about keeping my membership there. The new design is supposed to streamline the experience, adding "more of what you want, and less of what you don't" but ultimately, it's my opinion that it has destroyed what made fb stand out in the first place. It's now put "petty comments" off to a side bar, and combined the top news stories of the day into a "convenient" drop down menu. I've had my news feed filtered to my liking for some time now, and this has ruined it for me. I'm having trouble just finding simple items that I normally look for. Facebook is obviously incredibly successful (look at what happened in Egypt) so why would they want to overhaul it? It obviously worked wonders as is. While I understand that it's ultimately their IP, and as such they have the right to make it whatever they want, but why risk alienating your members (the sole reason for success) to make "improvements" that seemingly no one wants or likes? Anyway, what's your take on the new design?

I'm not fond of the changes, due to the fact that they just can't seem to settle on an update. Not to mention that the updates really aren't doing anything new. <_<

I don't get why companies feel the need to streamline things that weren't complex in the first place. No one was ever confused on how to use Facebook. I hate it when companies update interfaces, I was already use to using the old one, why change it?

The next time they change it, everyone will be use to the new format, and everyone will just be pissed again. It's not a good buisness model to ignore your customers.

Eh, whatever. It doesn't really bother me. The only thing I don't like is that I can't open a chat box then click on their name to go to their profile. Why did they get rid of that?

Yeah, all these unsolicited changes, yet we still can't get a "Dislike" button...
It's like they intentionally are pushing people's buttons to see how far they can go.

Agreed. It's been gone for some time, and was a very convenient feature that I used constantly.

Your missing the point, it changes so often and so unnecessarily that no one gets use to it. These constant updates are making me annoyed but I don't see myself leaving facebook anytime soon.

Just stylish it up if you don't like it  There's like a bajillion stylish themes for Facebook floating around the intertubes. Or quit that totally-five-weeks-ago network and join G+ :P

That's true, but you aren't Facebook's customers ;)

It's not improved-it just svcks

I've been waiting for Google+ to start letting people join up (I missed the Beta invite)

For a while now things on Facebook have just kind of not been working well (if at all). I accepted my cousin as my family member the other day and Facebook still insists on telling me to take some action on it. I've already approved him so it should be over and done with.

I also don't want Facebook as a home page so stop asking me if I want it to be Facebook.

I have some friends who I periodically chat with and they screwed up the chat a while back too. Sometimes it works but most of the time it really doesn't.

The coup de grace for me was the stupid pop ups telling me random crap-you have an action you have not completed (I already confirmed my cousin as a family member two days ago stop asking). It's not like before where I can just ignore it, now it pops up in my face despite me already having taken an action.

I don't pay any money do I? So ads, Facebook games, uhhhh some other people probably are their real customers?

Ya, and that's why Facebook shouldn't change their format right?

Everybody is talking about Google+ now. I'm wondering if it will overtake Facebook like Facebook did Myspace.

Meh, they always make stupid changes for pointless reasons. A week from now everyone will get over them and Facebook will only lose the users that left out of confusion or because of Google +.

A new annoyance with notifications: We now get a notice every time a chat is replied to.
...like I need a reminder that I need to respond to a real time chat that I'm currently involved in.

Here is the thing that everyone is dismissing. The weekly "tweaks" never overhauled the entire system. A little thing here, there, yes, but not a revamp... And like I said in the OP, this is just the primer for the "real big" change that is apparently happening next week.

Again, like has already been said, it's the idea that they are making it more complex by trying to simplify it. The reason for facebook's current success is it's accessibilty. The simplicity of it's design is what allowed your grandmother to post that embarrassing picture of you last week, and your five year old brother to diss you publicly on his wall, for all his kindergarten friends to see.

Even if that where so, the changes are still unnecessary.

By the way, I'm using Google+ and its actually rather nice, the whole circle idea is great.
