Spending my time writing a book

Post » Thu Oct 06, 2011 3:00 am

So I'm gonna write a book. I will start tomorrow and let you guys know what I wrote. But before I start, I need some ideas. The main story, characters, locations the environment and a lot of more.

I might start later if my PTA (exams.etc) comes in the way. But that won't take away my ideas

If your going to start writing a book tommorow and you have no ideas you might be in trouble! :)

First what kind of fantasy are you going for? high or low?

Think it to be high, with dwarfs, dragons.etc

And I do have alot of ideas, but I might change some of them with the forums info:) but I have a feeling this topic is going to drown..

(belongs in fan fiction?)

Definitely do something unique. Make it something the reader hasn't already read a dozen times.

Good luck though, quite an undertaking :foodndrink:

Isn't that the idea behind writing a book? I mean, building your own world and giving it life?

I will bullet point things you may or may not have already thought about.

-Basic layout of the world, continents etc.
-Factions, different races?
-Dragons are cool but are they fabled creatures or everywhere and are they good or bad or feral creatures or wise sages?
-Main characters has to be cool I like a cool main character

Lots more, PM me about it if you want ideas/brainstorm

Sounds like it will be rushed and unpolished IMO.

If you want it to be an actual BOOK and not just a story you write for fun, don't start it tomorrow, start it in a couple months. Spend time making your characters unique, and give them a back story that fleshes them out over the course of the book (as in, don't tell everything interesting about your character in the first chapter)

In the fantasy genre, I'd take George R. R. Martin as the best author at developing characters. If you've read his works, you know what I'm saying.

Basically, avoid cliches. If it's a fantasy adventure, try to avoid making it black an white like Lord of the Rings and everything that came off of it. Add antagonists that can be seen as good guys or bad, with their agenda's as to why they want the protagonist to fail varying and wading in shades of grey. The main bad guy could be an honorable hero who justifies whatever means to reach a worthy end.

Etc. This is the reason why you should take months developing characters and story before starting it. Because you're the only person controlling it, you need to carefully tell the tale and keep it interesting, and you need to know a LOT of information and judge what to show and when to keep it interesting.

[EDIT] Also, at some point, kill off your main character and have others take up his quest. Maybe he has a large group helping him, and they get spread out to perform it. More going on, more locations you can go into depth to, more cultures to flesh out to give your world believable. And the main character's death is just an out-of-left field twist you don't see often.

True, But my mind can come up with crazy things you know. From ''Did you see that?'' *Decapitated*. lawls. But serious It is going to be a standard book. Think about game of thrones but then in a more ''Special way''.

What? And being a fantasy author is about bringing your own brand of crazy to the mix and creating something special.

There once was a man named Zerp, he liked to herpa derp, one day he fell down and had a big frown, until along came a clown.

Try running with that, no need to thank me.

Why is this thread in Skyrim's forum? It's got nothing to do with Skyrim. And you might as well try to make a game instead of writing one. If you can make something with Skies of Arcadia type graphics and several hours storyline it's already very good when you made it by yourself. Won't make money but it'll be a great game for free lol.

I would suggest planning your history, religions, races, etc before you begin actual writing. It will help flesh it out. Take this from an actual writer. ;)

I tried writing a book... Kudos to you for wanting to start! The hard part is just sticking with it.

I'd say mix fantasy and real life together equally. try putting politics, corruption of government, poverty, and other stuff at points, and try to make it in a way that no one else has before.

Just suggestions that popped into my head. If you don't want to use them, then FINE!!!!!!
