Why so much hate for IGN?

Post » Mon Nov 28, 2011 5:27 pm

EDIT: ^Nice timing :D. Seriously though, I do agree the ending admitting it will win GOTY was surprising to me given the rest of the shows, and the previous shows tone toward uncharted. However you have to admit it was also given with a lot of ho hums and "the tragedy is."

(Disclaimer: I own both a PS3 and 360 and use and love them equally. I realize some of my language is a bit harsh but it is mainly just trying to say it truthfully. I dont think I am biased but whatever.)

Dont get me wrong. I visit IGN and I listen to their podcasts a lot. In fact its because of their podcasts that I feel the way I do regarding their scoring.

In the latest PS3 podcast (I never get the names straight) it's pretty obvious the guy that reviewed Uncharted was pretty big really devoted fan. You also have to consider (especially if you listen to their podcasts a lot and know the personalities a bit) that Uncharted is a big deal for PS3 users, and thus it seems to me they felt they needed to really talk it up, because it is the best thing going for PS3 right now. A comparison would be if on the Xbox side Halo Reach was talked up and received a 10 just because it is an exclusive, but the difference is the xbox isn't hurting...or maybe not hurting....lets say causing a need of compensation in behalf of its fans.

Dont get me wrong, Uncharted definitely is a 9.5-9.9, and an AWESOME game, but a 10 smacks of over zealousness to me.

All the casters also admitted that they have not played a TES game since Morrowind, and their experience with that one was limited, but I digress...

And on top of that you have the editor in chief writing a troll epeen column about two games that arent even comparable in terms of style and gameplay, which was completely unasked for and unwarranted, and then boasted about in a "hey come check out my needlessly dramatic and unprofessional article" way.

My point basically boils down to - IGN is pretty amateur, why are people taking them seriously? Better yet, why do developers give them the time of day? Honestly I hope they give Skyrim an 8.5 so the internet will explode with "OMG DA2 WATS" and they will be forced to reevaluate their business approach or not be taken seriously.

On the bright side, the guy doing the review seems somewhat competent...

So it's just gaming journalism you have a problem with? Not every form of media journalism?

Actually despite it's bought out ratings and heavy sponsorship "show me the 10s!!" gaming journalism is still light years ahead in honesty compared to regular media.

And thats pretty sad.

Whats so hard to understand? Should I have used the word "fanboyness" or "orgismingnerddom?" I preferred to use actual English.

Meh. I don't care enough about any gaming publications (online or otherwise) to hate them. People are opinionated and like to rage about things on the internet. I think that's probably all there is to it. All game reviews are opinion, and every reviewer says things I disagree with at some point (sometimes often). Welcome to a world full of people that aren't you. :P

This is why I like X-Play; specifically, Sessler.

See, now I find Sessler to be an overzealous, loud-mouthed [censored] with waaaay too high an opinion of what comes out of his own mouth, but different strokes for different folks.

Why would you expect scores to fall on a bell curve, exactly? (Edit: I see what you are getting at, but it is an arbitrary distinction. The chart you showed just demonstrates that they prefer scaling by 20 points [.5 incraments] rather than 100 points [.1 incraments]. The distribution of the values is still comparable to Gamespots, not to mention IGN admits that they exclusively grade on a 20 point scale now.)

How is that a straw man? You frickin' criticized IGN for rating the a GTA game a 10/10, and the only GTA game that received a 10 from IGN was GTA IV. Do you know what a straw man is? Seriously, I think you are confusing it with some other fallacy. Which GTA game did you mean to suggested was overrated, if I am commiting a straw man fallacy?

I didn't criticize them for giving GTA a ten, nor did I suggest that GTA was overrated. I think you took my generalization of IGN only giving 10's to GTA, Zelda and MGS a little to seriously. The straw man was that you built up an argument around GTA, that's incidental.

You misunderstood what I meant by the graphs; both IGN and Gamespots scores follow the same trend, highly weighted to wards high scores, it's got nothing to do with the increments, the scores in between the higher bars on the IGN graph are only there because they formerly used a hundred point scale.

Doesn't matter. God Hand isn't a 3/10.

IGN is the Fox News of gaming journalism.

I don't think he's overzealous or loud-mouthed.

You should watch his show on G4 (Sessler's Soapbox).

Here's the latest one: http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/717762/uncharted-3-and-the-problem-with-review-scores-sesslers-soapbox/

Now in this one, he is being loud-mouthed, but because he is concerned with how people react to the numbers of the gaming press.

I simply found it amusing that you're okay with a 9.9, but a 10 is taking things too far.

Because IGN have terrible reviews. Is the game hyped to hell ? If the answer is yes, it gets a 10.

Remember GTA IV ? Plenty of flaws, but nope its a 10.

Oh and their community, dear god their community.

Not perfect, but:

10.0 - Masterpiece
The pinnacle of gaming, a masterpiece may not be flawless, but it is so exceptional that it is hard to imagine a game being better. At the time of its release, this game is the not just the best the system can offer, but better than we could have expected.

I can mention a [censored]load of features and functions I'd want in my favorite games, that aren't there to begin with.

The article about Dark Souls made me wince at first, until I bought the game and fell for its brave new way of treating me like I can think for myself. It will still end up in my disc tray often enough even after Skyrim comes out.

IGN actually did me a favour by posting that article, even though I thought it was preposterous at the time.So I owe them one.You can't spell ignorant without "rant"...he he he.
