Getting Started With D&D

Alright this seems to be what I understand what I will need:
Rule Books
Dm Guides
Dice
Pen and & Paper
Character Sheets
1in Grid Paper
Markers for characters and monsters

That sound about right?

multiclassing is gone in the traditional sense, lots of restrictions on how you can multiclass and the "preferred" way of multiclassing is to choose feats (goddammit! feats should be special!) in another class.

Really hurts in making the character the way you envision and in the long-run really hurts on how you can power up.

multiclassing is in fact returned to close to ad&d.

4e allows you to make characters however you like, in which would not sacrifice any survivability or power. you can play a naked fighter and still be good. or make unarmed as specialty without svcking. but just like their usual practice, they screw up their games for every new accessary published.

Grids are easy to draw on. Hexes are more accurate for range/scale/movement measurement.

Those who've played 4th ed. might have better insight as to what to get.

A ruler or marked string might avoid the conflict all together (like using naval mini's, micro armor, etc.)

The only thing I ever use is core, dice, and character sheets. Maps optional in my games, only if I expect an intense and heavy fight or have one planned.

You forgot chips and Dr.Pepper. Would be nice if you bring also hotdogs, plastic cups, dishes, forks and mustard.
