If you compare it to Oblivion or Fallout you will be disappointed. Compared to DOOM it feels very "free roam". You have an inventory!

Peace and Love!

from what i understand there is a world and you can go wherever you want but there is nothing in the world that you can get into, things only open up when you receive the related quest.

It's not free-roam. It's linear, but not as restrictive as typical shooters like Doom, Quake, Half-Life, etc.. You'll feel more "free", but it's just in your perception of things.

It an open world to a point. You can spend time in the wasteland driving around and destroying vehicles or looking for rare plants but that's about it. Basically the wasteland is there for you to get to all the missions and that is all. Besides cars there are really no enemy's at all. So it's not like fallout 3 or anything. It's a FPS game that instead of just progressing to the next level you get back to the wasteland and go sell your items or buy ammo or pick up some items to build more equipment. I think it is a great game and well worth the purchase. Some sat it is very very short but I did everything the game had to offer and have about 40 hrs ivested into it, still have yet to finish. When people say they beat it in a few hours I think the same people are the ones that beat fallout 3 or borderlands in 5 hours. They miss out on all the goodies.

I have completed the game and I can tell you this; it's more like kind of free roam but primarily linear. The difference is you are not being forced down a linear corridor when you are outside, but you are still told to get there, with no pressure at all. You can ignore the missions and walk around alone, but you'll really find the wasteland to be incredibly small. There is nothing exciting to find by exploring free-roam (besides the character "Crazy Joe" - who serves no purpose to the game).

It's free roam in a very limited world space, also you are very limited in what you can or can not jump up on. The game is not a real FPS/RPG it's more a FPS with some small RPG features in and it's linear because the only thing you can do in the game is missions then it's over, you can find/search for materials and junk to sell or craft some items/ammo...and some cards that you can play with, with a dude in the bar area (not fun at all).

EDIT: You can also race car races in towns, but they get boring to due to they are all the same more or less.

Maybe a new classifier's necessary? The Expanded FPS.
I can imagine fans reflecting fondly already, "This ain't your grandparents fps, this is meat and potatoes, this is the wide world of RAGE".

It's a linear FPS with some nonlinear elements. Nowhere near as open as TES or Fallout, or even STALKER.

It is kind of free roam in that you can roam (or drive) freely as long as you eventually go to the next rather linear location. Unlike Fallout 3 and its vast free roam sandbox, Rage doesn't really have much off the beaten path to explore anyway.

What nobody has mentioned is that you can return to areas that you have previously visited to find them repopulated and not just because another mission has sent you there.

So yes each mission is rather linear, and the main storyline is linear, but way more than half the game is optional. You can go through the game doing what you are told, the moment you are told to do it, or you can go do whatever you feel like. You can go back into areas of the game you think you have already completed to find more stuff to fight.

Those who do the main storyline the moment each mission is presented to them will probably find the game to be a horribly linear experience. For those who are willing to get out there and explore they will find a unique experience that is very different to the experience others will have had.

As an example, try going back to Dead City after you have completed the first mission there, but before you get the second mission to go back. You will find it a totally different experience. The same goes for many areas in the game.

Still, as others have stated it's not as open world as a game like Fallout or Oblivion, but the fps action is head and shoulders above either of those games. Rage is a first person shooter first and foremost and id do that better than anyone.

I wouldnt really call it free roam.... its more of a hub world type game.. in the likes of zelda ocarina of time, or batman arkham asylum... only there is less to do in the open areas... the level design is phenominal though... def worth getting.

Return more than twice?

I'm not sure about that, maybe. Try it. Explore. I can tell you for certain that you can go to Dead City and have 3 different experiences. Twice are missions, but you can go back and run through it backwards between the two missions. It's still full of mutants at that point but you are forced to go backwards through it. I didn't try it a forth time. It wouldn't surprise me if you can go back after the second mission there to run through it a fourth time with Authority again.

I also went back to other places to find them repopulated but different. There are loads more experiences to be found in this game than the quest lines force you into.

If you enjoyed an enviroment then go back there and get a new experience of fighting through it whether there is a mission sending you there or not. What difference does it make really? Isn't a game like this about having fun? Make your own story. I think that was what id was trying to offer with this game: choices. It seems like so many players only want to play what is spoon fed to them and then complain about it.

much appreciated

If only 'random' revisitation opened up 'secret' quests or treasure as a peripheral incentive. Loot is typically enough to svck most players into returning to a previously explored area. Same logic as buying the AMG first and then making a net profit of $79 when finding the freebie: scrutiny is its own opportunity

its open but guided

it would be cool if after you beat the game all the places would be open again filled with enemies , sorta like a level select but in the open world
