Teaching myself to play piano.

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 6:02 am

My friend just moved into a new apartment so he gave me his old Yamaha keyboard, that's pretty awesome, except I can't play piano. Can anybody recommend me a website to learn to play online? Free preferably.

Youtube is a great resource. (it's not just for fail videos :hehe: )

If I'm having a hard time figuring out a particular guitar riff or the like, I'll tube it.. Granted you have to sort the posers from the real talents, but that's anywhere.

I taught myself. I learned by color, (The notes on the sheet music were colored and the color meant a certain key) After a while I was able to just read the music. I also play violin so I was able to read treble clef easily anyways. I'd suggest just teaching yourself, youtube is effective, you don't necessarily have to be able to read music either.

Thats very interesting. I don't think I've ever seen that before.

I feel like if the colors were as prominent as those in like Guitar Hero or Rock Band, it'd be very easy to commit things to memory.

My husband plays piano with a natural talent. I have an ear for it, but I've never learned to play. We are moving in a week, and then my uncle is giving us a piano, and I fully intend to teach myself. What little I can play, I've taught myself. I've never thought of YouTube, but I think that's a good suggestion. Otherwise, you might just go to a music store (or look on amazon.com) and buy a tutorial book. They're not expensive, and then you don't have to be on your computer while you're learning. :D

Trying to learn IS learning, remember that. If you learn a piece of music, you never get better trying to play it over and over again.

Find simple pieces of music that you enjoy (Morrowind theme for example)n practice a little every day and learn theory as you go along. You should be playing in no time.

I am not a musician by any means, nor do I know how to play the piano necessarily, but I've been trying to get my head around this whole music thing. I've found these http://www.musictheory.net/lessons to be really helpful. Maybe they'll give you some insight.

Precisely. I'm a guitar hero master as well.

It's not hard if you know how to read music, I kind of grew up a musician so it wasn't that hard for me.
As to answer your question, Youtube is your best friend.

Im a self taught pianist...

firstly you want to learn the basic major and minor chords, that is A B C D E F and G, and Am, Bm, Cm, Dm, Em, Fm, Gm.

Learn them before anything, then move onto the sevens A7, B7 and so on.

When you're farmiliar with the chords, a great training aid is to stick your ipod on shuffle and stand at your keyboard jamming along to whatever comes on. If you have trouble working out the chords of songs, a simple google search will give you the chords of any song you can think of. Though make sure to search for guitar chords, cause searching keyboard notation will bring up sheet music which takes training to be able to read.

That is ingenious :shifty:

I've been having so much trouble getting myself to read music

I can't read music sheets but I know the notes and if you tell me the order I'll memorise it :)

I play piano/keyboard, I used youtube/google'd for advice and started a couple years ago.

Music theory. It's boring as hell but you won't get nowhere if you don't learn the simple chords and scales. I've played piano and guitar for 8 years and so and it's so important to know these things, but you probably allerady know that

You should start with learning the keys and some basic chords, before moving towards some simple piano pieces. As others have allerady said: Use youtube! One of my primary motivations when I was younger was to learn some of the songs from Zelda OoT and Majoras Mask, and it really helped me develop and push myself further when it came to piano knowledge/skills. :celebration:
