DST ends... for Americans (we're slow)

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 10:33 am

personally i dont know why we do this anymore. i could be mistaken but wasnt the original intent for farming and agriculture or something?

I haven't seen DEFRON's clip yet, but http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_saving_time implies heavily that it didn't take off until World War I. So you could effectively blame the war for getting it started. For silly reasons if you ask me. Daylight is daylight. I don't see how you burn more or less fuel just because you moved the clock hands.

DST is a major joke and should be stopped. Arizona has it right.

I concur. Arizona and Hawaii are the only two states that have any sense. Its been proven that it actually causes a 3% increase in electrical usage in the summer since people are home longer while the sun is up (running their air conditioners more). I just hate it because it seriously messes with my system. I sleep poorly all during DST (stay awake too late and still have to get up early). Last night was the first good nights sleep I've had in months.

I only just realized this about 5 minutes ago, after comparing the time on my watch to my PC time (synchronized to the internet).

DST just makes things more confusing for everybody.

Eh, it's always fun to get that extra hour every fall.

We don't talk about the spring ahead, though...

Just remembered right now as i was about to fall asleep. I would've woken up an hour earlier than absolutely necessary! :o

So let last to the stupid party that is totally out of sync with the rest of the world finally arrives (well, i guess it should be leaves since it is ending).

I leave you with this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84aWtseb2-4 (I particularly enjoy the 4 minute mark where it shows how screwed up world scheduling gets by DST and how Arizona is just crazy)

You just got me hooked on a YouTube page. That never happens! I literally watched this and all of his other videos. I enjoyed the Arizona part as well.

Thing is, it'd still be the same time in summer as it always has been. That's the standard time. It just becomes different in the winter months, being lighter earlier (not really) and getting darker later (but only by an hour). I don't really see the point with it but it doesn't bother me that it's here either.

I never understood peoples hatred of DST. Personally like it myself. The farther north you live on the globe, you learn to appreciate it more I guess. The sun wouldn't be coming up until 9:30 in the morning if we didn't have the fall back. Its much easier getting used to it being dark by 5PM than it is to have to wake up and its still completely dark in the mornings.

I love DST!

I hate the darkness of winter-time. And nothing beats putting the clock that one hour forward in the spring, and suddenly there's long, long evenings with daylight! :twirl:

If I was rich I'd live in Norway from April to September, and in New Zealand from October to March! :) That way I could also get to follow a decent rugby tournament!! :D

No, what we have during the Summer is Daylight Savings Time. Right now (after the "fall back") is Standard Time. If they left it Standard, we wouldn't have the changes in the Spring and Fall (and it would get dark an hour earlier in Summer).

I can't believe that people can't deal with the changing of clocks Two times a year, it's not that big of a deal.

It's the other way round: summer time/daylight savings/whatever mean longer evenings at the expense of shorter mornings: the sun comes up later, or if you prefer, you're condemned to getting up an hour earlier for the duration of the summer. The father north you get, the worse it is. I'm not sure why people who prefer to take advantage of the earlier light don't just get up earlier themselves instead of forcing everyone else to do it...

It's quite a big deal when you already have to get up at 6am... I think many people are just frustrated at the pointlessness of it, though.

It's pointless and screws with cross-timezone scheduling which is already difficult enough.

I like DST. In the summer it stays light later so you have more time to enjoy the outdoors after work.

I think we should do away with Standard Time and just got to DST all the time.

Here in the north it is a good thing. Daylight hours are really few at midwinter (further north the sun doesn't rise at all for months) so it does help with getting the daylight at a somewhat more reasonable time :hehe:

I wish the powers that be would just leave the damn time alone.
Everyone's all out of whack trying to realign themselves to later mornings and darker evenings. Come spring, it will be earlier mornings, and sunlight evenings, and we will be all out of whak then, too. Nitghttime is supposed to be dark, deal with it.

I don't think the DST here has much affect on anyone, they grump about 1hour less sleep but then their over it because day and night here are always dark so the difference isn't massive.
Like its actually dark now and its only 3:50pm
